Weed Weeks- a permaculture working vacation

We will be holding a series of "Weed Weeks" this summer at our farm as we shift our farm from organic agriculture to a permaculture system. We will focus on permaculture basics, plant identification, soil building and community. We believe that a system that uses barter and community building more and money less is more sustainable, so we will run it on a similar system to wwoofing. Camping and food are free, and a morning of hands-on practical experience working on a farm-turning-food-forest benefits both the farm and the attendee. Afternoons are free to go to the nearby beaches (within a short walk or bikeride), to hike the many nearby trails, to visit town or just to relax. Yes, there will be hot showers.
The dates of the weeks are June 24- July 1st, July 29th to August 5th, and August 19th to August 26th. Depending on the chestnut harvest, we may have another in the fall. We will take 2-6 attendees for each week. Preference will be given to those who can stay for the whole week, but exceptions may be made.
For more info or to apply, please email me at amberafc@gmail.com.

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Hello friends, fellow mycophiles, and fungal enthusiasts!
The Mycelial Network Collective is excited to officially announce plans for the 2nd ever Radical Mycology Convergence (RMC) and we want you to come! If you haven´t heard of the RMC before, you can read about first one (in 2011) at the link at the bottom of this post. Following up on the success of last year´s RMC we have hopes to expand the event this year to include even more events and we want you to participate!

What: As with the first RMC, we envision this unique event to be a volunteer-run gathering of mycologists, fungal enthusiasts, and Earth healers coming together to share skills and information related to the benefits of the fungal kingdom in terms of remediative properties as well as human uses. This weekend-long event will culminate in a remediation project (putting theory to practice) and will also be a unique chance to build community with like-minded mycophiles (aka mushroom lovers) from around North America. We are hoping to hold this years´s RMC in October or November somewhere along the West Coast. We are currently on the search for a location. If you have ideas or leads, please read the “Help Us Find A Location” on the website and contact us!

Why: Because these skills need to get shared! We want to make information on fungi and their helaing powers accessible and tangible for as many people as possible without making it overly-heady or technical. By creating an encouraging space we hope to “bemushroom” all who attend.

Who: The Mycelial Network Collective, organizers of the RMC, would like to cordially invite anyone interested in participating in this event to come and learn, help out, or teach!

http://radicalmycology.wordpress.com/

New Hampshire Permaculture Farm and Homestead Seeking Interns, Apprentices

D Acres of New Hampshire Organic Permaculture Farm & Educational Homestead is an innovative, non-profit organization located on 180 acres of forest, perennial, and annual gardens in the foothills of the White Mountains. Our mission is to improve the human relationship with the rural New England landscape by researching, applying, and teaching skills of sustainable living, small-scale agriculture, and collaborative community. Through the initiation of local food networks, alternative technologies, skills-based cottage industries, educational programming, and community events, we are working towards the localization of our regional economy so that our needs of food, energy, shelter, community and health are met within our community.

We are currently seeking prospective applicants for our residential program. Interns and apprentices are involved in all aspects of daily operations at our working farm and homestead. Focus areas include organic gardening, sustainable forestry, animal husbandry, woodworking, blacksmithing, traditional arts & cottage crafts, herbology, metal fabrication, grant writing, alternative building and earthen construction, culinary arts and food preservation, renewable energy, hospitality and hostel management, youth education, graphic design, and videography. Interns must have some experience related to sustainable living and farming, whereas individuals with no experience are encouraged to apply as an apprentice. Projects and operations are decided in weekly group meetings using consensus-based processes.

We require a minimum 6 week commitment for interns and apprentices, with 26 hours of work per week expected. Interns pay a $20 fee per week, while apprentices pay $20 per day. These program fees cover the cost of room and board (treehouses or tent platforms and 3 organic, farm-fresh meals per day), as well as access to all on-site workshops and events. In addition to the 26 hours, interns and apprentices partake in the communal contract, which amounts to approximately 5-8 hours per week of basic tasks such as meal preparation, house chores, and group meetings. The 26 hour format allows for concentrated and organized communal work, while the free remaining time is at your disposal for personal projects, exploring our beautiful forested property and trail system, reading, hiking, biking, swimming, rock climbing at the nearby Rumney Rocks, or snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the winter.

For more information, a complete list of available positions, or to apply online, visit

http://www.dacres.org/Working%20at%20D%20Acres.htm

For further information on workshops, events, and hostel services, contact us at info@dacres.org or (603)786-2366.

DC/Northern VA - Rent my basement, grow food

My wife and I are separating, and I'm looking to rent out the finished basement in our house. The house is in Dale City, with proximity to Manassas, Potomac Mills, and I-95. The neighborhood is very nice, pretty quiet, and feeds into good schools. There is a grocery store within walking distance, and opportunities for hiking and biking. I have a vegetable garden and am in the process of designing a home orchard/food forest. If you like gardening or growing food, this is the place for you.

The basement is fully finished with one bedroom, a closet and crawlspace for storage, and a living area with brick fireplace. There are doors that lead to the garage and to the back yard. The laundry area is located in the basement, kitchen upstairs. Because the laundry area is shared, I would be willing to set up a schedule for washing clothes - I definitely respect privacy. The kitchen is available for use at any time.

Rent is $700/mo plus half utilities, one half month's rent as a security deposit. If I end up renting out one of the upstairs bedrooms as well, the utilities will be reduced to a third. I don't mind if you smoke, as long as you go outside. I don't mind if you drink, as long as you aren't the type that gets crazy when you do. Please, no drugs or drama. I'm not picky about your age, race, religion, gender, politics, sexuality or what side of the bread you like your butter on - as long as rent gets paid on time and you clean up after yourself, things are golden.

A little about me - I'm 32, and do design/build for a company that specializes in edible landscaping (fruit trees, berries, veggie gardens, etc.). I'm finishing up my degree in Horticulture from NOVA this Spring.

If this sounds like something you're interested in, shoot me an email and tell me a bit about yourself.

Jon

Permaculture Data Base for the NE

The Permaculture Institute of the Northeast (PINE) wants to help design a solution/strategy to meet this need and would like to hear your feedback on the idea of a searchable online tool. What kind of content would you like to have at your fingertips? What would you want to be searchable? And what would you want to share? For now, we’re calling it a ‘database’, but we understand it will evolve or change form based on your feedback and input.

If you choose to participate, please help us keep this project moving by responding to our Request for Feedback Survey by Thursday, November 17. PINE will be reviewing feedback in late November and come back with proposals for community consideration. All feedback will also be made public/available with names removed.

Fill out the feed back questionnaire here -
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEpRTU0zVWs0Nm9IMm8yQmphNExZMEE6MQ

P.I.N.E. - http://northeastpc.ning.com/

Winter Weekend Permaculture Design Course in Maine

Announcing our one-weekend-per-month format for the internationally-recognized full Permaculture Design Certificate Course, Running November 2011 through April 2012 in and around Portland Maine (about 2h north of Boston by car/train/bus). This course is recommended for home-owners and renters, gardeners, landscape professionals, planners, architects, engineers, tradespeople, community activists and anyone interested in changing "how we organize ourselves" in the landscape.

Expected Outcomes:

Gain a thorough understanding of permaculture origins, ethics, principles and methodologies.
Enhance your ability to build soil, capture water, reduce energy consumption, generate energy, grow and store food, read the landscape and create edible perennial ecosystems.
Become a resource for your family and neighborhood, building resilience at the personal, household and community levels.
Learn how to start transforming even challenging properties into healthy, hi-yielding, low energy systems of abundance.
Be able to approach any property and apply a permaculture design methodology and set of applied techniques to achieve increased resilience and true sustainability.

Past students are recommending the Permaculture Design Certificate Course course because...

"Everyone should familiarize themselves with permaculture principles & techniques given the local & global changes that are underway."

"It's what we have to do! We all need to enter this scary future more prepared than we are and this course will steer you in the direction of sustainability... and it's fun." (Russ Van Deursen)

"It is tremendous and life altering and revolutionarily simple in it's brilliance and because you discover the tools within you to create the change that you know must happen in this great big beautiful injured world."(Sarah Bostick)

"Many of us seek to improve our World but few of us have the practical skills needed to manifest the desired outcome. Taking the Permaculture Design Course I learned not only specific skill sets but had the amazing experience of working with other people from all walks of life who share this common goal. Charles, Julia, and Lisa were inspirational expert instructors who took the time to ensure each student's progress while providing the very best course material" (Kiarna Boyd)

"Overall, to say this permaculture class was great falls vastly short. It's like the language we have can't contain my feelings regarding the class. It was a paradigm-shifting spiritual type of event. This class on permaculture landscape design gave my life positive new meaning and direction. A positive solution-oriented Path to follow that looks at the destruction we have wrought on this planet full in the face, and doesn't shy away from the immensity of it, but like aikido, uses the same forces that create destruction to heal and recreate balance, beauty, health, community. This class was the perfect mix of people who magically came together at the right time. It was the stuff legends are made of when you reflect back on your life when you're near the end." (Jesse Watson)

Permaculture Design Certificate Course Details

Where: This course will take place in and around Portland, Maine (with our March weekend being largely field trips to sites relevant to permaculture.) It will consist of the traditional 72-hour PDC course + approx 40 additional hours to ensure we cover hands-on activities, regional examples and timely developments.

When: This course will be held for one weekend per month, November through April.
Maine, soon to build Earthbag dome :)

Hello from Maine,

Hey I just discovered this part of the forum :)

Well I am in Maine and plan to build an Earthbag dome as seen here :

http://earthbagplans.wordpress.com/2010/10/11/enviro-earthbag-dome-2-2/

I like the "egg shape" because it resists wind and doesn't really have a roof :)

But the architect Own Geiger, has many different types, conventionally looking ones, towers, and free ones too, see the "categories" on that page. His "pay" plans are very affordable anyway, like $200 on average.

Compare that to Lowe's $700 Katrina cabin plans. Thank Lowes for trying to make a big profit out of a terrible disaster! And Earthship designer Michael Reynolds sells his plans for $3000 - even though in his movie "Garbage Warrior" he states he is "trying to save the world".

So I expect the house will be about $10k. I'll have the funds for it by next year (hopefully) or the next one.

They are affordable like mobile homes, only much better insulted. About $10 per square foot :)

I also consider earth bag and super adobe homes to be like "junior monolithic domes" - they resist all the elements almost as well.

Right now it looks like we'll be building in Harrison :)

So hello East coast people :)

Cheers!
Craig

Looking for beekeepers in VT/NH/MA/NY

Hello!
My name's Luise and I've been permaculturing for over two years now. I'm a PDC graduate, currently working on my diploma and turning my little garden into a permaculture paradise.

I've been living in Germany and happily beekeeping there, using Warré's methods. Now I'm moving to VT and I'd love to get to know some natural beekeepers in VT or neighbouring states. Anyone out there?

Have a great day!
Luise

Please move this topic if this part of the forum is not ideal for it - maybe beekeepers tend to mingle more in the critter care section?

Early Summer Farm and Nature Immersion Permaculture Design Certification Course

2011 Prospect Rock Permaculture Design Certification Course:
June 19 - July 1, 2011
Willow Crossing Farm, Johnson, VT

Burlington Permaculture and Prospect Rock Permaculture are pleased to offer our fourth-annual early summer Permaculture Design Certification course. This year our course will be even further immersed in ecology and practice: held at Willow Crossing Farm- a regenerative organic family farm and now decade-old permaculture project on the beautiful Lamoille River and Vermont’s Long Trail.
The two week residential intensive course goes above and beyond the internationally recognized standard curriculum with focus on Social Justice, Food Security, Farm Design, Transition, Environmental and Outdoor Education, Natural Building, Horticulture Therapy, Community/ Commercial Scale Production and Propagation, Appropriate Farm Machinery and Tools, Professional Presentation and Graphic Representation of Designs, and visits to the vibrant farms, homesteads, nurseries, and ethical businesses that contribute to the resilient agricultural economy of northern Vermont.
Almost 100% of the food served during the course will come from the host site and immediately local farms visited during the course. With abundant opportunities to see, practice, and implement permaculture solutions at varying scales, thorough grounding in the process of design and first-hand study of ecology, and led by some of the most experienced designers, farmers, and educators in Vermont and the Northeast- this course affords opportunities for development and engagement in personal and community resilience like no other.

Hands-on Design and Co-Creation of Vibrant, Wholly Nourishing Human Landscapes:

Together, we'll engage in whole-systems ecological design and implementation of permaculture solutions for a multi-use community garden specifically focused on the needs of food-insecure Vermonters. Learn alongside students, architects, activists, community planners, homesteaders, farmers, business owners, and others while engaging in real world design problems, and being immersed the wild and cultivated beauty of a permaculture site. Each student will also be guided in generating and presenting a design for a site of their own choosing.

Our approach explores the way human beings- as individuals and communities- can participate in the creation of ethical, socially just, and ecologically regenerative perennial support systems. We apply the sciences of Ecology, Anthropology, Ethnobiology, and Evolution to agriculture, the built environment, and social and economic organization (‘invisible structures’) by integrating plants, animals, buildings, people, communities, economies, and the landscapes that surround us through careful analysis and thoughtful design. We also practice permaculture ethics, principles, techniques, and skills by collaborating on real-world projects with an eye towards repairing, restoring, and regenerating human ecosystems.

We welcome graduates of other permaculture design courses to refresh their certification, gain new perspective and experience, build their networks, and advance their practice with the Advanced Permaculture Design and Teacher/ Facilitator Training opportunities available at this site and through this course.

Permaculture is a design science focused on the intersection of social and ecological health. We explore the relationships between the built environment, food security, energy, water, and natural communities, in order to retrofit this infrastructure to respond to the confluent crises of the 21st century with localized resilience, abundance, and ecological regeneration. Build your skills and capacity by taking part!

Our dynamic natural site in the midst of an agriculturally vibrant area affords ample opportunities to study and observe wild ecology, fruit, nut, vegetable, and medicinal herb production, natural/ alternative beekeeping poultry care, natural building, alternative energy, community-scale resilience, etc. In addition to all farm sourced food, immersion in wild ecology, radical sustainability, and the site offers us the opportunity to swim, hike, paddle, and camp in the beauty and inspiration of the early Vermont summer.

All farm sourced, local organic meals, travel to field trips, canoe and kayak use, and camping accommodation is included in the course cost of $1200. There are other lodging options available at additional cost. There are limited opportunities for professional development grants, work trade, scholarships, and other financial aid. Discounted registration for groups, couples, referrals, and travel to the course by boat, bike, foot, or other non motorized means, is available for early registrations. This course has historically filled quickly, please contact us to reserve your space as soon as possible.

As always, permaculture designers, activists, and alumni are welcome visit to present, review students designs, network, or just join us for a (very) local organic meal! Many sessions will be open and free to interested public.

Instructors and guests include: Keith Morris, Mark Krawczyk, Alissa White, Lisa DePiano, Andrew Faust, Skotty Kellogg, Starhawk, the Beehive Collective, and more!

This course is available for 4 credits through the University of Vermont. This course qualifies for the Vermont Green professional development grants- Vermont residents may be eligible for up to $880 in aid.

To for more information, instructor bios, to register, or download a flyer to hang in your town, at you school, (or on your wall), visit:
www.prospectrock.org

Be part of a crowdsourcing effort to create an urban edible forest garden in the City of Syracuse, NY.

The Best Design, selected by a panel jury, will receive a $250 cash award and be implemented on the property of the Rahma Free Health Clinic at 3100 South Salina St in Syracuse. Submissions are due by April 1, 2011 with the Best Design and two Honorable Mentions announced at the Upstate NY Glossary Link Permaculture Gathering in Rochester, NY on Saturday April 9, 2011.

2011 Permaculture Community Design Open: Rahma Free Health Clinic Snack Garden, Syracuse, NY

Open Registration Date: 8:00 AM EST - February 16, 2011

Final Submissions Due Date: 5:00 PM EST - April 1, 2011

Winners Announcement: The winners will be announced at the Upstate NY Permaculture Gathering in Rochester NY, on April 9, 2011; and on the Alchemical Nursery website.
Awards for entrants:
● The Overall Best Design will receive $250 cash and be displayed in the Rahma Health Clinic lobby.
● The Overall Best Design and two Honorable mentions will be featured on the Alchemical Nursery website, and be
displayed at the Upstate NY Permaculture Gathering in Rochester, NY.
● All entrants will receive acknowledgment for their participation through Alchemical Nursery website and media,
and will receive a letter of recognition.

Creative Brief

The Rahma Clinic is a new resource for Syracuse providing free health care services at their 3100 South Salina St. location. An important part of health is nutrition and healthy eating, and it is a well known fact that the Southside of Syracuse currently does not have a grocery store providing fresh produce and healthy food choices. Young and old are faced with an overabundance of pre-packaged sugar laden snacks and processed “foods”. More healthy food options are needed for Southside residents and visitors.

Creative Task and Criteria

Create a design for a free harvest “Snack Garden” at the Rahma Clinic, based upon an edible forest garden model that demonstrates the following 5 task criteria:
I. Perennial “Snacking”

* Demonstrate an Understanding of Proper Growing and Site Conditions

* Feature primarily perennial species that are suited to the Syracuse biosystem

* Require minimal maintenance

* Produce food for continuous seasonal harvest that can be “eaten from the vine” - or snacked on raw from the garden.

II. Demonstrate Permaculture Ethics

* Earthcare, Peoplecare, Fairshare

III. Follow Permaculture and Edible Forest Garden Principles

* Permaculture is an ecological design system that looks to nature for inspiration to create productive and resilient design solutions. For nutshell descriptions of the principles visit http://permacultureprinciples.com/principles.php

* Multi-Story and Multi-Product Functionality and Design. For more information about edible forest gardening visit http://www.edibleforestgardens.com/about_gardening

IV. Construction Criteria and Specifications

* Designs must be easily implemented by community volunteers.

* Site specifications (location, square footage, shape, aerial photograph, current vegetation) are available for viewing at http://goo.gl/maps/omCq

* Material costs should be within a reasonable amount for a grassroots and volunteer driven task, using donated materials and funds.

V. Additional Aspects

* Originality, Uniqueness, and Aesthetics; Creation of a compelling design story

* Use of Local, Repurposed and Natural Materials

Background

The Community Permaculture Design Open is a project of The Alchemical Nursery, intended to bring free and innovative Permaculture design to the needs of regional socio-economic and community development. The Design Open also gives an opportunity to Permaculturists, landscape designers, and sustainable agriculture practitioners to showcase their work.

Jury and Evaluation

The Design Open jury will pick an Overall Best Design and two Honorable Mentions from all submissions based upon the criteria above. Submissions will be evaluated by a jury made up of individuals who are versed in Permaculture, landscape design, and sustainable agriculture. The jury members are:

* Emanuel Carter, Associate Professor, Dept of Landscape Architecture at SUNY-ESF
* Frank Cetera, Board President and Certified Permaculture Designer, The Alchemical Nursery
* Michael Burns, Certified Permaculture Designer and Co-Founder of the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute
* Lindsay Speer, Certified Permaculture Designer, Syracuse, NY
* Valerie Dawnstar, Certified Permaculture Designer, Oswego, NY
* Jessi Lyons, Resource Educator, Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County

Registration and Submission

Register for the competition starting on Wednesday February 16th by sending your name (or name of all partners if a team) and contact info (email, telephone, and mailing address) to:

permacultureThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
Vermont Whole Systems Permaculture Design Course

Utilizing the incomparable Whole Systems Research Farm permaculture site in Vermont's Mad River Valley, our design studio resources, and a team of leading facilitators, Whole Systems Design and Keith Morris of Prospect Rock Permaculture present the first of many permaculture design courses to be offered in the coming decades. This certification course will be held July 31st to August 12th, 2011 at the Whole Systems Design Studio and Research Farm site.

This course offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on applied permaculture skills immersed within one of North America's most diverse and intensive permaculture research sites. Participants will engage with high-performance home and community resource systems that will be more resilient in the face of problems posed by peak oil, climate change, environmental toxicity, and the inability of existing economic and social systems to deal with such challenges.

This course includes the standard certificate curriculum but goes way beyond the typical Designer's Certification Course by utilizing the background of skills-based trainings offered in Whole Systems Skills, and is filled with practice-based, learning-by-doing experiences, not only concept and information-based study. Students in this course will not walk away from the experience without basic post-peak oil resiliency literacy including: how to plant a tree, fell a tree, split firewood, harvest biomass with a sycthe and sharpen it, sharpen and maintain other basic tools, perform earthworks, plumb basic waterworks and harvest water, inoculate mushroom logs and spread mushroom patches and innumerable other hard skills available to us via our working homestead, farm and practitioner-teachers.

Unlike at many permaculture course, we will actually be practicing these techniques on the farm throughout the course.

Course Highlights

• Immersion and practice in one of the most sophisticated permaculture sites in
North America.
• Living at a beautiful site in the heart of Vermont, in the Mad River Valley.
• Ecological design and engineering pioneer John Todd anchors a team of guest
instructors and visiting presenters.
• Field trips to regional sites to see models of permaculture strategies in action.

There will be a first-come-first-served opportunity for a 3 day applied permaculture practicum after the course where a small group of course students will have the opportunity to practice permaculture all day, each day, on the research farm site.

Laearn more at www.wholesystemsdesign.com/permaculture-design-course/ and download the flier below.

JOIN US in developing new solutions to unprecedented challenges.
