Permaculture Course in Central/South America?

Hey,

my name is Jake and I'm new to permies.com. I signed up in an effort to be more informed about some WWOOFing opportunities and also see any courses that are legitimate and upcoming in the next few months. I am going to be WWOOFing and volunteering throughout Central America and South America over the next few months but I was looking to see if anyone knew of a permaculture course within Central and South America before I embark on this journey. It would be great to get some hands on experience and take an actual course that is very informative. I have been emailing the people at Rio Muchacho in Ecuador as I have only heard/read incredible things but they have been unresponsive over the course of the last 2 weeks and haven't gotten back to any of my few emails. Any information would be great, also if anyone knows of any WWOOFing opportunities as well or farms that I should check out because of your (or a friends) positive experience that would be awesome. Thanks so much and have a great day.

- Jake

Radical Myclogy Convergence 2012

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Hello friends, fellow mycophiles, and fungal enthusiasts!
The Mycelial Network Collective is excited to officially announce plans for the 2nd ever Radical Mycology Convergence (RMC) and we want you to come! If you haven´t heard of the RMC before, you can read about first one (in 2011) at the link at the bottom of this post. Following up on the success of last year´s RMC we have hopes to expand the event this year to include even more events and we want you to participate!

What: As with the first RMC, we envision this unique event to be a volunteer-run gathering of mycologists, fungal enthusiasts, and Earth healers coming together to share skills and information related to the benefits of the fungal kingdom in terms of remediative properties as well as human uses. This weekend-long event will culminate in a remediation project (putting theory to practice) and will also be a unique chance to build community with like-minded mycophiles (aka mushroom lovers) from around North America. We are hoping to hold this years´s RMC in October or November somewhere along the West Coast. We are currently on the search for a location. If you have ideas or leads, please read the “Help Us Find A Location” on the website and contact us!

Why: Because these skills need to get shared! We want to make information on fungi and their helaing powers accessible and tangible for as many people as possible without making it overly-heady or technical. By creating an encouraging space we hope to “bemushroom” all who attend.

Who: The Mycelial Network Collective, organizers of the RMC, would like to cordially invite anyone interested in participating in this event to come and learn, help out, or teach!

http://radicalmycology.wordpress.com/

***SEEKING SURVEOR FOR 450 ACRE PROJECT IN BAJA, MEXICO***

Greetings ~
It is with great honor that our Rancho Solimar team is embarking on the preliminary stage of site evaluation for our 450 acre sustainable farm/living community project located seven miles north of the artist village, Todos Santos, in the lower Baja Penninsula.

The Rancho Solimar vision embraces a holistic approach to land development with the principles of permaculture guiding the conscious design of community space and agriculturally productive systems. We are building a participatory community and educational platform where scientists, engineers, technicians, workers and artists live and work to sustain an organic farm village community.

With the exception of fifty acres, which have been cleared and farmed in the past, this property is pristine virgin desert with 500 meters of Pacific beachfront and virtually no development on either side for miles. The land has a gradual slope toward the ocean and hills that lend themselves to majestic 360 degree views...

We look forward to exploring the potential in sharing this Baja learning opportunity with qualified and interested folks. We are dedicated to mindfully working with the existing eco-systems to protect the rich beauty and diversity that only the Baja climate can sustain.

Sustainably Yours,
Laurel Hubert
laurelhubert@gmail.com

PLEASE CONTACT ME ON MY EMAIL TO ENSURE WE MAKE CONTACT!!! laurelhubert@gmail.com

Growing garlic in highlands of western Guatemala

Greetings Permies,

I'm spending a few months in Guatemala this winter. On break from my volunteer gig in the lowlands of eastern Guat, I'm spending a week in San Pedro la Laguna on the Lake Atitlan. My host would love to grow garlic on a small plot of land he owns. I have not seen this plot. Question is:

Can garlic grow here? Presume so, onions grow fine here, and garlic grows fine in areas of the US where there is no snow as well.

Anyone grown anything in this climate? Relatively temperate yearround, no snowfall... I don't know details on rainy season vs dry season. I'd love to know if you know when to plant garlic in the Lago Atitlan area.

Thank you o muchas gracias!

-Greg

Apprenticeships: Mystical Yoga Farm, Guatemala

Ongoing Apprenticeships

Finca de Yoga Mistica is open to those who have a calling to live in a yoga and spiritual community in the most beautiful and mystical lake in the world. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us for as little as a week or many months to come. By joining our apprentice program you are making a commitment to the yogic and spiritual lifestyle we practice every day on the farm.

The Mystical Yoga Farm started in 2009, and we are learning how to run our apprenticeship program in conjunction with the other programs we offer at the farm and to also maintain the spiritual community as the foundation of it all. We hope that each apprentice (that means you) will whole heartedly join our community for a month or more and seek ways to contribute to the operation of the farm, the smooth running of the programs, and the growth of our community.

As of yet, we do not have clearly outlined roles for everyone at the farm, so you will need to take initiative to define your role and to determine how you can contribute to the farm.

Possible ways to contribute: teaching yoga classes, cooking, cleaning, building, gardening, welcoming guests, marketing, networking, emailing, and beyond. It is expected that each person contributes about 6 hours each day to the farm. It is also encouraged to take one day off a week to explore the area around the lake or for any other personal journey.

Please contact us if you are interested in starting an apprenticeship.

bryan@mysticalyogafarm.com
http://mysticalyogafarm.com

Permaculture Design Course- Jan 5-17, 2012 Guatemala

http://schoolyogainstitute.com/permaculture-design-course/
The Permaculture Project LLC headed by Brother Wayne is a well established permaculture certification organization in United States and it was the first one authorized by Bill Mollison. It works to help build the proper eco‑skills necessary in all areas of life. Our vision is to make sure that all of our students and clients are eventually able to read directly from the very Book of Nature herself. Care and love of the environment are at the core of our work: ethics and values grow naturally out of these practices: care of the earth, care of people, ethical surplus distribution, building an ecological-human support base. One can come to understand the inherent connection between Nature, humanity and society, revealing that every thought, word and action carries consequences. Each person shares responsibility for the development of another.

The Permaculture Project LLC believes that education focuses our efforts to answer life’s fundamental questions. Learning the answers to these questions is best encouraged through love, nurturing, cooperation and reverence for all life.

We seek to create positive and ethical lifestyle change, develop ecological and environmental harmony and stability for future generations, and teach appropriate technologies that sustain rather than harm. There is great benefit when intellectual knowledge is translated into personal experience and right and appropriate action. Through personal and customized consultation, research, design and implementation, curriculum development and education, The Permaculture Project LLC promotes true self‑reliance through hands‑on practice for farmers, gardeners, home‑owners, urban dwellers, educators, administrators, communities, businesses, students, ranchers, landowners, architects, regional planners and builder-developers. Ultimately, we can achieve balance and health by synthesizing applied biology, eco-technology and integrative architecture: the merging of renewable energies and biological-earth systems.

Dates: January 5-17, 2012
Price: $1,300 Tuition
Room & Food: $420
Location: Mystical Yoga Farm, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
http://schoolyogainstitute.com/permaculture-design-course/

The Permaculture Design Certificate Course is a training utilizing the teachings of Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Design System.
16 Day PDC at Estancia Ranquilco with TreeYo Permaculture

[ftp=ftp://www.treeyopermaculture.wordpress.com/patagoniapdc]www.treeyopermaculture.wordpress.com/patagoniapdc[/ftp]
November 15th- December 1st, 2011

TreeYo Permaculture is excited to offer a 16-day Permaculture Design Course (PDC) in conjunction with Estancia Ranquilco in the mountains of Patagonia, Argentina. The 100,000-acre working cattle ranch doubles as an eco-tourism destination that utilizes Permaculture Design to continually progress the onsite systems towards overall community self-reliance. This new 16-day format is an expression of TreeYo’s commitment to providing the best educational programs possible. This extended course structure will accommodate more hands-on experiences to learn through the body, more interactive exercises to enrich the learning process, and a more in depth final design project to reinforce the classroom learning. This will lead us beyond the traditional 2-week intensive originally laid out by Bill Mollison that has one day off and a total of 72 hours of instruction.

This 16-day PDC will be an engaging combination of interactive educational opportunities for numerous learning styles including hands-on activities. This extended format allows students to delve deep into the theory of the design principles, directly experience the design process, and learn from past design and implementation work of others while actively progressing the Estancia’s sustainability objectives and enhancing the “eco” in its eco-tourism infrastructure. To learn more about our specific facilitation style and view the highlights of TreeYo’s past courses, please explore the following page: www.treeyopermaculture.wordpress.com

This 16-day PDC will be held at Estancia Ranquilco, which is a broad-acre ranching farm supported by the local Gaucho tradition of shepherding. Additionally, the Estancia blends Permaculture Design and Holistic Management strategies together into its overall site development and decision-making. Below is a description of the Estancia Ranquilco and its surrounding territory. It was written by the Carrither’s family who has owned the land for several generations.

“Ranquilco is uniquely situated and orientated to serve as a venue for these courses as well as inner journeys of personal growth. Many who have dedicated sufficient time to be on our vast lands, high and deep, in the cordillera of the Argentine Patagonia Andes, have experienced the magic, which seems to roam over the mountains, down the valleys, and through the crystalline river waters. Thus it seems to be an Earth power point, somewhat disguised as a traditional working cattle ranch, replete with hundreds of livestock and horses, gauchos, and high mountain landscape replete with stunning natural beauty. We have long striven for the benefits and blessings of self-sufficiency and have achieved notable progress in such fields as dairy, organic meats, bee keeping, electricity production, draft animal husbandry, leather working and more to come.”

This 16-day PDC includes the 14 chapters of Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual by Bill Mollison. Some of the topics included are as follows:
- Ethics, Principles, and Methods of Design
- Pattern Understanding: Interpretation and Application
- Water harvesting, conservation, purification, and revitalization
- Tree Crops, reforestation, and nutrient recycling
- Soil classification, biological interaction, and re-mineralization
- Tropical, Dryland, and Temperate influences on vegetation, housing, and earthworks
- Nutrition, fermentation, and local food systems
- Transition Towns – emerging and evolving approach to community level sustainability

Facilitators: Doug Crouch, Sara Wuerstle, and Eva Wimmer
Language used: English (with some help to translate unknown words when necessary)
BASE FEE for the Course = $700 per person* (This Base Fee includes instruction and food only. Housing pricing is separate. See below for details.)
*Available “Early Bird” discounted Base Fees are:
•	If registered before September 15th the Base Fee is $500 per person
•	If registered before October 15th the Base Fee is $600 per person
HOUSING OPTIONS & RATES: PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ESTANCIA OFFERS A VARIETY OF HOUSING OPTIONS.
The Tantra of Permaculture: Connecting Inner and Outer Landscapes

A Permaculture Design Certification Course and Tantra Intensive
Monday, December 13 at 5:00pm - December 29 at 5:00pm
Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua

The Tantra of Permaculture expands upon the standard Permaculture Design Certification Course by integrating a deeper exploration of our relationship with ourselves, our communities, and the environment. Each step of the course is an individual and collective embodied learning experience.

Both Permaculture and Tantra employ a parallel philosophy of cultivating an obs...ervant and acceptance-based perspective through which an understanding of the wild within and without can be organically and infinitely linked. The Tantra of Permaculture workshop utilises this joint perspective to design collaborative, mutually beneficial and abundant realities in nature. By integrating the work of internally-focused Tantra with externally-focused Permaculture, we create a synergy based in holistic approaches to the design of integral living.

This course begins with a 2-day Tantra Intensive retreat with world-renowned teacher, Gaia Ma, and continues into a 14-day integrated eco-tantra Permaculture Design Certification. The 2-day intensive introduction will develop intimacy and deepen our connection as a co-creative community.

Participants will engage in the following:

Permaculture Design Methods & Process
Observation & Nature Awareness
Pattern Design & Biomimicry
Water on the Landscape
Swales, Keyline, & Pond Building
Integrated Animal Systems
Rain Harvesting & Catchments
Grey Water & Bioremediation
Natural Building
Organic Gardening
Forest Ecology
Food Forest Gardening
Soil Ecology & Soil Building
Appropriate Technology
Mushrooms/Myco-Remediation
Eco-Village Design
Group Wisdom Circles
Silent and Dynamic Meditation
Yoga & Embodiment Practices
Conscious Co-creation
Relationship Skills Development
Community Building and Group Facilitation
Sexuality and Fertility Magic
Sacred Geometry
Eco-Spirtuality
Ritual
Dance & Celebration

Location:

InanItah is a consciously created, evolutionary living and learning community on magical Isla de Ometepe in Nicaragua. InanItah holds a vision of raising spiritual and environmental consciousness by cultivating observant awareness along side service and celebration. This is a powerful place for individual and collective transformation.

InanItah is situated between fire and water volcanoes, tucked against the hillside of Volcan Maderas on an incredibly biologically diverse 22 acres. The peaceful natural surroundings are framed by panoramic views of both volcanoes and epic sunsets over the lake. Isla de Ometepe has a rich spiritual ancestry and once served as a sacred Indian burial ground, with evidence to this day of Meso-American influences.

Instructors:

Gaia Ma is co-founder of InanItah where she pioneers an evolution in community based living and learning. She has served and lived in alternative community since 2003. Gaia facilitates yoga classes and Tantra intensives internationally. She is Certified Skydancing Tantra Teacher and received certification in the Osho Therapist Program and earned degrees in Economics and Gender & Sexuality Studies from New York University. Gaia highlights the integration of spirit with matter, of masculine with feminine and of shadow and light. She is committed to supporting the expansion of consiousnes and to creating symbiotic relationships.

Brandy Hall is the Education and Site Director for the Ashevillage Institute in Asheville, NC. She holds a Master's in Contemplative Education from Naropa University and brings forth a passion for Permaculture as a tool for planetary healing in this time of global transition, beginning with ourselves. She has lived and taught on farms from New York to Costa Rica, and has been deepening her connection to the Earth through farming, building, designing, and educating since 2004.

Keri Evjy is the founder of Healing Roots Design, a regenerative and medicinal landscape design and herbalism practice in Asheville, NC. Keri has taught in the fields of Permaculture, bilingual and outdoor education, yoga, and herbal medicine. She is renewed by guiding people through their desire for greater self-reliance, grassroots preventative health care and care for the earth.

Fee: $1375; includes accommodations and healthy local meals. The course covers the core Permaculture Design curriculum including applications of Permaculture in diverse settings and techniques for meeting human needs that harmonize with ecological patterns. Lectures and hands-on work will explore bioregional designs, natural building, renewable energy choices in North America and the Tropics, agroforestry, composting toilets, methane biodigesters, watershed management, community development, tropical and temperate garden and orchard design, energy and nutrient cycling, and the integration of animals into cultivated ecosystems. Local experts on organic production and goat management will make guest appearances. The course will conclude with students doing their own Permaculture site design. Permaculture design benefits community leaders and professionals in the fields of architecture, planning, ecology and education.

INSTRUCTOR
Christopher Shanks has over 10 years of experience in Central America with Permaculture design and implementation. After a three-year stint in Costa Rica apprenticing throughout the country he joined Project Bona Fide (www.projectbonafide.com). Chris currently co-directs Project Bona Fide and is the farm manager and chief designer and master-planner of the site. He has spent most of the last seven and half years developing the site's agro-forests, agro-ecologies, educational programs, research facilities, and natural building examples with the passionate help of hundreds of volunteers, interns, as well as a wonderful and dedicated local staff. Chris has extensive experience in botany, horticulture, poly-cultures, ethno-botany, natural building and construction, water management and purification as well as renewable energy systems. Chris has worked professionally in the US and abroad in the fields of site design, master-planning, and permaculture design. Currently Chris owns and operates a small design build firm called: Living Systems Solutions LLC in Nicaragua. It is a triple bottom line business founded and run on Permaculture principles. Chris has also worked extensively in the field of design in the temperate regions in the frigid cold states of Vermont and New York state as well as the temperate states of Washington and California and has lived and traveled in Spain and Thailand as well as worked and designed in the Bahamas for many years. Chris' experience and training spring from a deep passion for all things green and good and an intense desire to co-create a regenerative landscape for all beings for all time. He is the product of all the wonderful teachers and mentors he has been fortunate to have and is eager to share what he has learned.

ACCOMODATIONS
Students will be accommodated in one of three houses during the course. Most students will stay in the wonderful, private bunkhouse (Jeanne's) set amongst fruit trees on the edge of the rainforest. There are six beautiful bamboo bunkbeds and one double bed to sleep in, as well as a number of hammocks where you can relax outside. This house has 65 acres of protected forest, six kilometers of trails, a 60-foot cascade, views to the national park, and beautiful swimming holes. Jeanne's comes equipped with running water, electricity, one flush toilet, one composting toilet (which we encourage everyone to use as to reduce the pressure on our small septic system), two passively heated private outdoor showers, and an indoor shower.

The Hooch is a magnificent private building that sits high amongst the trees with dramatic vistas out towards the forest. It is outfitted with one double bed and two single beds on two floors and sleeps up to four people. It features a beautiful bamboo floor. Guests staying in the Hooch share two beautiful showers and an awesome composting toilet with interns at the Hankey House. And as with all of our other accommodations, the Hooch has perfect access to many of our trails, swimming holes and waterfalls.

The main house is set on our 250-acre private wildlife refuge and features eight kilometers of trails, abundant wildlife, waterfalls, rivers, swimming holes, and beautiful forests that border the La Cangreja National Park. The house is less than a one-minute walk to town and contains three comfortable rooms. There are numerous Mayan hammocks on the porches in which to read a book or nap. Guests at the main house share a bathroom. The house has one flush toilet, one composting toilet and one methane biodigester toilet that provides cooking gas for the kitchen. The main house is generally the most active place at the Ranch, and where all meals are served.

We also have a beautiful camping area that looks out to the La Cangreja National Park.

FOOD
Meals are vegetarian, wholesome and delicious. The Ranch takes their cooking and food seriously. For snacks the Ranch serves bananas and sweet breads, the latter often times cooked in our homemade earthen oven or solar cookers.

COST
$1,200. Includes all food, lodging, instruction and access to the Ranch and its facilities. We are offering a discount to Costa Ricans and scholarships to three locals.

ENROLLMENT
For more information and/or to enroll in the course please contact Jackie Pitts at jackie.pitts13@gmail.com.
Permaculture on a Nicaraguan cattle farm

Hello, I am looking for people that would like to volunteer their knowledge onsite in Boaco, Nicargua. I happen to have the oppurtunity to develop a working farm from the ground up. This farm's goal is to be a successful cattle ( beef, milk) farm, while at the same time following organic and permaculture practices. This farm ( about 150 acres ) is located among many other cattle farms that have been around for a while. If we can be successful with our venture, then the other farmers would be willing to copy our practices. This fact alone will help spread the spirit of permaculture. What do I consider successful, healthy animals, healthy trees dirt plants, healthy farm hands, less animals on the farm but produce the same yields as other farms. I am not experienced in bringing the permaculture practices
to a large piece ( 150 acres) of land. All I have learned is self taught, I am hoping to have the chicken rotating into the paddocks by 2011. I can offer shelter and food during your stay, the length of your stay can be your choice. We were thinking 2-4 weeks. If this adventure has some appeal to you please drop me a line.
Best Regards
