We've got a semi-durable, stainless, chinese digging fork. I'm on number two now, they last maybe one year. While trying to dig/pull out the cow manure/straw combination (created by my hired help and father-in-law not listening to my instructions to put sawdust down under the cows each night while we were on vacation last month), I heard the first "snap" from the handle. Of course, handles can be replaced, but it reminds me again of the inevitable dissapointment awaiting when one day in the spring some metal bit will break, so I wonder:

1. Does anyone in Europe know a mail order source that ships to Slovakia a really strong, forged garden fork that will survive very clayey, heavy soil while double digging next spring?

2. Who we are?
ECOCENTRE ICPPC the first fully-integrated small-scale ecological demonstration site in Poland. The site includes working examples of clay and straw buildings, organic food gardens, home-scale renewable energy, grey-water recycling systems, rainwater catchment systems, and a developing permaculture food forest. The ecocentre is located in Stryszow, Malopolska province, Poland, a village of 2,000 people, nestled in the foothills of the picturesque Carpathian Mountains.

Details of the PDC
An experienced permaculture teacher and designer, founder of Glacial Lakes Permaculture, Karl J. Schmidt teaches Permaculture Design Course in Poland. Karl was a student of e.g. Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton.

The Course will run 12 full days, starting on the morning of Monday, August 6, 2012 and ending in the afternoon of Saturday, August 18, 201. It takes place in EKOCENTRUM ICPPC (www.eko-cel.pl) in Stryszow and is taught in English.

The PDC covers the standard 72-hour curriculum developed by Bill Mollison which is commonly taught all over the world, but will include extra information tailored to colder climates, as well as practical, hands-on components to spur active learning about permaculture processes and design. Hands-on course sessions will give participants a chance to work on projects developed in EKOCENTRUM ICPPC.

For students from the former communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe, the full Permaculture Design Course fee is USD 1000/EUR 750/PLN 3350. (Participants from other countries pay 1500 USD).

Also, does anyone have experience working for cash or making money while helpxing or wwoofing?  Hopefully not too off topic but it's interesting nonetheless.  20 or 30 hours per week still leaves plenty of time to do more, if I'm not in the mood to do my own thing.

generations, in the most outstanding natural surroundings... we love to make it available.

WHO ARE WE?
We are a married couple, Yasmín and Michael, taking care of this beautiful land
(rented but it would be also possible to buy it), in which we found a old house that we have
spent 1,5years renovating in a creative and ecological way (see pictures).
We also have done our best to help the fruit trees to be more healthy and prepare a
nice space for growing vegetables.
We came here with the aspiration to bring into reality the base for an Eco-village
project, for which we have created and nourish a Non Profit Organization called “The
School of Creative Conciousness”.

THE LAND
Situated in a quiet area in the North-West of Tenerife, the land counts with
4 hectares on the side of a mountain, very fertile and with abondance of water.
It is situated in a canyon that we call our little Machu Pichu. Half of a hectare is cultivated
in terraces with 30 different varieties of fruit trees (avocados, mangos, oranges, lemons,
limes, kakis, chirimoyas, macadamias, almonds, figs, starfruits, litchies, guaves, strawberry
guaves, pitangas, apples, rose-apples, pears, plums, pomegranates, papayas, nísperos, treetomatos,
one madroño, etc) and fruit bearing bushes like physalis, blackberrys... Everything
treated organically and with love. The rest of the land is a hipericum forest and other
autoctonus species.
It has also a big water reservoir (shared with two neighbouring lands) which with a
bit of cleaning can be also be used for swimming.

COMMUNICATIONS
Communications are good -it is only 5 minutes by car from the village and 10 minutes
to the sea- and it has easy access to materials, events, shops... The village is really
charming and people in general are very friendly.
All around there are already quite a few ecological farms (some also for sale), and
lovely alternative people from around the world living in the area.

THE HOUSE
The house is very artistic. It has two rooms (already there when we arrived), and a
nice artistic bathroom with bath, a kitchen and dinning area plus studio space and a
covered terrace that we made ourselves. There is also a big old room that needs renovation
and that we use as storage room for tools and materials.
The whole place is provided with free electricity in exchange of a water-pipe
crossing the land.

THE POTENCIAL
The place has enormous potential, also in ways to make a living: the area is specially
suitable for eco-turism (many beautiful walks depart from near the land), or as a healing
and retreat centre, as way as selling the fruits and vegetables either on local markets or
for exportation (already the production of avocados can be a good income and as they are so
many varieties, we have avocados nearly all year around!)
As the farm is in protected area, for the possibility of building other structures is
needed to prepare an educational, scientific or social project and present it to the local
authorities (which are very open and friendly).

WHY WE LEAVE
Although we feel tremendous Love and Gratitude for this place, in which we have
learned so much and that we have come to call “The Sanctuary of Health”, we have decided
to let our work and the land in other loving and caring hands who can give continuity to the
vision creatively and in their own unique way, to help blossom and maintain this place as
well as fully enjoy it.
The reason we love to leave, is because we are also ready for a change and we love to
explore already existing Ecovillages in our mind-frame and spirit.

CONDITIONS OF THE LAND
The land is rented to a nice elder couple who live in an ashram in India with their
children and grandchildren. We have good relationship with them and we are happy to
support them in their lives. They would be ready to sell but they are also happy renting it
indefinitely.
We would like to find people who “rise” in love with the land like we did, want to take
care of it, and are happy to find an arrangement either for a period (or we would prefer
long term), in which our work will be also valued so we can continue to do our work and
service also elsewhere.
We could let the whole place with all kinds of tools and equipement: like wash-machine,
water-heater, gardening tools, wood working tools, furniture, tents, and a lovely
conservatory, kitchen equipement, wooden stove, electric deshumidifier and even
inclusively our lovely car (a Renault Kangoo in very good condition).

During this intensive two-week design course we will explore reasons for change, how Permaculture has developed, and the natural consequences of where we are heading, negatively or positively. As instructors we will deliver the maximum understanding and empowerment in the shortest time possible. Focus on methodology, urban and rural land based system, transition towns, social art and activism.

We will focus on the application of Permaculture though an understanding of underlying principles and applications. Our emphasis will be to stimulate participants into transforming their habitual perspectives by offering fresh points of view, alternative techniques, technologies, so that they may adapt their experience to new applications and situations. The workshop will include theory and hands-on design work as well as field trips. The course offers a shared vocabulary and opportunity to connect with others interested in a more humane and local economy to support future generations.

Cost 600 Euros to be paid upon arrival. Early registration discount: 550 Euros if paid up until April 17th. Application form sent upon request.
Fee covers instruction, facilities, certificate and course materials. Food and lodging not included. Participants may camp or stay in a nearby bed and breakfast - a list of accommodations will be provided. 

This course meets requirements of the Permaculture certification course developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. Upon completion of the full design course participants will receive a certificate of Permaculture Design.


Where:
The course will be held at Cascina Remondenca, a 19th century farmhouse perched in the foothills of the Italian Alps. Located on the Villa Francegena or Pilgrims Trail (which begins in Canterbury UK and stretches to Rome), the house sits on the rim of a nature preserve with dozens of walking trails. Fruit trees surround the house on terraces along with a garden and vineyards. Chiaverano prides itself as cittaslow (slowcity) applying the philosophy and concepts of slowfood to local communities and governments of towns.

Marguerite Kahrl, Artist, Permaculture designer and educator with 15 years of experience implementing principles and philosophy of Permaculture in the context of homesteads and social art projects. In her artwork, Marguerite Kahrl approaches systems thinking from a playful angle, manipulating messages and media to instigate social engagement. Her idiosyncratic constructions highlight our complex relationship with energy and the land.
For example, Kahrl's remote controlled vehicles describe a cycle of resource consumption. These elaborate machines are constructed from junkyard parts and operate on a by-product of organic waste: methane, a landfill gas.

The course will be held at the Permaship in the lovely and historic village of Shipka in the Balkan Mountains.   We held a very successful four day course there last spring that really help progress the site.  This site overlooks the renown valley of the roses and has several water harvesting features, gardens, animal gardens, and an emerging food forest. The site is in the temperate zone as the continental effect grips this site with delights of four seasons.  It is a really great climate for growing fruit and the cherry drips just drip here in the spring.  Additionally, it is a great community that helps to deliver this course with lots of love. This intention manifests into delicious food, warm hospitality, and a fun atmosphere. Shipka is easily reached by train and a short bus ride from the local bigger city.  You can still seen signs of the good sign of communism here in the countryside- land held in the commons.


This course follows the 14 chapters of Permaculture : A designers Manual by Bill Mollison. Some of the topics presented within that includes the following and more:

- Ethics, Principles, and Methods of Design
- Water harvesting, conservation, purification, and revitalization

- Tree Crops, reforestation, and nutrient recycling

The course will be held at the Escola Da Terra which has several water harvesting features (See video), gardens, and an emerging food forest. This will be the fourth course we have taught there at this brilliant small scale intensive site.  There are numerous sites in the locale including our camping spot which are great examples of Permaculture.  They feature earthworks and food forests from this lovely sub-tropical microclimate that allows avocado's next to apples to grow.  Additionally, there is a great surrounding community that helps to deliver this course with lots of love. This intention manifests into delicious food, warm hosts, and a fun atmosphere.

The course will be held near Sintra, just outside of Lisbon, which has very beautiful forests, beaches, and more moderate temperatures. The local villages have the feel of the countryside yet it is easily reachable from Lisbon. A 45 minute train ride and a 15 minute car ride and you are there.

Lesley Martin was an organic grower and farmer in Cornwall for 20 years before taking a Permaculture Design course in 1995. She went on to take the Permaculture Diploma, with a 2 year teaching apprenticeship. After qualifying as a teacher in Adult Education she delivered Government funded Permaculture Training Courses throughout the South West of England before moving to Portugal in 1999.

No. 4 September 24th and 25th - THE EU AND BULGARIA

Being an Objective 1 member of the EU is a fantastic opportunity to really make things happen…..or it’s a one time opportunity to be squandered and lost. We’ll look at what’s happening in Bulgaria and using the example of Ireland, consider what could be happening and then let’s see what we can do about this.

The format of this session will be influenced by the debate and discussion during the previous sessions.

Community Activism is an essential part of Community and Rural Development but it is first and foremost about education and information. After almost 4 years of EU membership, virtually nothing has happened at a community level. Few people are questioning this and that is mainly because they don’t know what they should be expecting. We will share examples of good and bad behaviour in a development process and we will examine the question ‘What can we do to make sure that the people of Bulgaria do not lose out on their one and only opportunity to access funds for real, sustainable community development?’

We are a couple, thirty years each, and we discovered permaculture concept 3 years ago. Since that, we moved to the country, i quit my job, and i’m currently training in agriculture (arboriculture).

Our landbase* :

Located in SW of France, tempered decidious forest biome and transitional oceanic climate. Average 850mm (33.5 inch) of rain by year. Zone USDA 8, min temp on the past five year is -10,5°C (13°F).
The property is divided between a one hectare (2.5 acres) forested and quite slopped plot with a little house at the bottom, and two springs and a well. The other plot is about 0,3ha (0.7 acres), located at 150m (500 ft) of the house, is flat and forested and is lined by a spring and a river.
* we hope to move in in several months.

And our project (rough draft) :

- Meet all or the majority of our needs in food, (alternative) medicine, beauty, fun, energy/fuel (may be difficult). For food, we hope to adopt a kind of paleo food whose need would be met by a food forest, poultry raising, gardening, mushroom cultivation, and aquaculture (short- mid-term).
- Teach permaculture with the plots as examples (mid-term).
- Co-housing with another family, based on individuals modules (superadobe ?) and the existing house as shared faciilities (mid- long-term).

Anyway, our family and a couple of others are just looking at houses together with a view to forming a consensus based intentional community. We're all families with kids (of varying ages) in which all the adults (at least) profess faith in Jesus. We're looking to buy in or near the city that two of the families currently live in. Permaculture/Eco-living is likely to be a partial focus for us.

I've been searching for information about how to go about getting mortgages, what legal structures (if any) we should/could adopt. If there are any gotchas or must-dos that we should be looking out for, particularly any specific to the UK.

USA Im interested in getting a better understanding on how permaculture and related movements are shaping up in Western Europe in comparison to the US.
What are the different issues facing these two regions in sustainability?
Are Europeans more open and prone to permaculture over Americans? It seems there are these pockets in Europe where a lot is being done, such as the UK, Bulgaria, and even Portugal but some other countries such as Germany and France aren't really as active. Am I correct in assuming this? And what makes one country more prone to participating in permaculture over another? Is it economic or political affiliation?

I'd love some insight into this!!!

Hallo everyone,

I am working to extend the French PmC apprenticeship scheme so that French and Türk PDC 'postgrduates' would have more places to work, study and live.

Your profile would be something like:-

Permaculture Diploma holder or equivalent
5 years experience on your project
Dormitory or other accomodation space
Library of permaculture texts
Internet (ideally)
Spare time to teach PmC Design, 5 hours a week ideally.
Ability to speak French or Turkish would be an additional advantage, where this isn't the case only students proficient in your language would be proposed.

The system is based on the French Compagnonage system which was started in medieval times it works like this:-
'Masters' host apprentices and teach them the necessary skills
Apprentices do a tour of several different places and 'Masters' to get a rounded and thorough training
The system is free.
At the end of their Tour and training, the Apprentice sets themselves up in their craft and also becomes a 'node' in the Tour that an Apprentice can visit for training.

We have kept these aspects and added in others:-
An apprentice has completed an accredited Permaculture Design course.
They are working towards their Diploma of PmC Design.
Students who are working towards their Diploma but who are not following the apprenticeship route and who are based on and developing their own projects can also host Apprentices as a Companion, the apprentices' 'Tutor' is one of the Tutors at the Université Populaire de Permaculture.


So we have
Apprentices :- working to gain their Diploma through working/studying on PmC sites and who have completed a PDC
Companions :- those working towards their Diploma, based on their own projects who can host Apprentices. The latter are tutored from the UPP
Companion Masters :- Those who have a Diploma (or equivalent), a project on which they are based and who host Apprentices and Tutor them directly.

If you would be interested in becoming a Companion Master or a Companion, and you fulfill the criteria above we would welcome your involvement.
