The Draw Permaculture Course July 2012 on the Bayfield Peninsula, WI

I'm currently an intern at The Draw and truly value the people here and the
work they put into transitioning their lives to lives of abundance. I chose to
take on the job of advertising since they rarely use the internet. The Draw is
working on a unique site and scale being that it's 280 acres of mostly secondary
succession poplar forest in the upland with the Raspberry river (runs into lake
Michagan) as a lowland with a ton of large balsam, cedar, black ash, maple,
and hemlock in the in-tact river bottom. They don't have 30 year old forest
garden examples like the bullocks out on Orcas Island in Washington, but they
have 6 year old forest gardens, tons of knowledge, and they're doing everything
you can read about when it comes to permaculture (One of the coolest things
that they're working on in my opinion is transitioning their secondary succession
poplar dominated forests into climax forests of chestnuts and walnuts. If you're
going to take a permaculture course, I can promise that this one has a lot more
to offer than concepts imbedded within a short three day course.

Sincerely,

Adrian

In this ten day workshop we will delve deeply into the system of permaculture
design.
We hope you will leave the course saturated with a new way of knowing which
empowers students to look at old problems with new lenses to create holistic
solutions.

We will begin by exploring a new way of knowing that is holistic and biological.
One way to describe permaculture is land-use design based in systems thinking.
Thinking systems is basically the opposite of how we are trained to think, and
how we think becomes so deeply ingrained that most of us don't ever realize
there are alternative ways of knowing. Limits to the dominant way of knowing in
our culture, reductionism, are becoming increasingly evident as human and
ecological systems continue to degrade. Thinking in systems is the foundation
upon which regenerative ecological and social solutions can be implemented. We
will relate this new way of knowing to agriculture, evolution, ecology, natural
history, water, social organization, natural building, epistemology and more to
come up with a pattern language for a regenerative culture.

A permaculture way of knowing cannot be built on top of our current
unsustainable way of knowing. Simple lineal accumulation of knowledge is not
sufficient. Radical reorganization of life-ways is necessary if we are going to
create a regenerative culture—a permaculture. We must step back, question our
assumptions, and ground ourselves in a paradigm of sanity and empowerment.

Join us for this 10 day immersion course in a permaculture inspired land-based
community. You will learn from a functioning permaculture site as well as
several regional practicing permaculturists. Lecture and discussion will be
bolstered by daily hands on activities. Three local organic meals daily, on
site camping, and materials will be included. This design course is intended
for hands on practitioners and is priced to be affordable; certificates
available from Clare Hintz for those whose management goals include
certification.

When: -Friday July 13th-Sunday July 22nd
Where: -Bayfield Peninsula, WI.
Pricing: -Honor-system sliding-scale $450-$900.
Contact: -Nathaniel Larson 715-779-0155
email: the.draw.ps@...
For More Info: www.thedraw.org or www.facebook.com/BayPermaculture (Eric Frank

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Hello friends, fellow mycophiles, and fungal enthusiasts!
The Mycelial Network Collective is excited to officially announce plans for the 2nd ever Radical Mycology Convergence (RMC) and we want you to come! If you haven´t heard of the RMC before, you can read about first one (in 2011) at the link at the bottom of this post. Following up on the success of last year´s RMC we have hopes to expand the event this year to include even more events and we want you to participate!

What: As with the first RMC, we envision this unique event to be a volunteer-run gathering of mycologists, fungal enthusiasts, and Earth healers coming together to share skills and information related to the benefits of the fungal kingdom in terms of remediative properties as well as human uses. This weekend-long event will culminate in a remediation project (putting theory to practice) and will also be a unique chance to build community with like-minded mycophiles (aka mushroom lovers) from around North America. We are hoping to hold this years´s RMC in October or November somewhere along the West Coast. We are currently on the search for a location. If you have ideas or leads, please read the “Help Us Find A Location” on the website and contact us!

Why: Because these skills need to get shared! We want to make information on fungi and their helaing powers accessible and tangible for as many people as possible without making it overly-heady or technical. By creating an encouraging space we hope to “bemushroom” all who attend.

Who: The Mycelial Network Collective, organizers of the RMC, would like to cordially invite anyone interested in participating in this event to come and learn, help out, or teach!

http://radicalmycology.wordpress.com/

Central Oklahoma Permies

I was just wondering if there are any Permies on here in the central OK area. We are near Shawnee on 6 acres. We have expanded the garden this year by putting in Hugel Kultur beds and we are using the same concept in our raised beds. I have started thinking about putting in a food forest but we have a lot of cedars that would need to be removed. It will get there eventually but I wish we could do things faster!

Urban & Rural Two week Permaculture Design Course (PDC)

We will have the unique opportunity to host the PDC at two locations to highlight the many contexts in which we are working. We will be stationed for the first five days at OM Valley Permaculture demonstration site in the hills of one of the cities most eclectic neighborhoods of Northside. Here Braden, with the help of many volunteers and students, has been creating a small demonstration site with this unique piece of land that makes you feel like you are a bit rural but get a nice skyline view at the same time. Ripe with chicken tractors and food forests, a small nursery and native forest, this site lends itself well to learning and being able to use it as a base to explore some of the other urban locales with sustainability initiatives.

For the last 7.5 days after the day off, we will be given the great opportunity to be hosted by Grailville Ecovillage, just 35 minutes north of the city center of Cincinnati in Loveland, Ohio. On this 300 acres of rolling hills of forest and rich pastoral landscape, we see a different context, broad-scale permaculture and social Permaculture to deepen our understanding of this all encompassing topic. They also have quite a clever and approved waste water treatment station and hold true to their virtue of women’s empowerment and the arts.
http://treeyopermaculture.com/future-courses/july-16th-29th-two-week-permaculture-design-certificate-course-at-om-valley-urban-permaculture-grailville-ecovillage-cincinnati-oh-usa/

The two week course will include 80+ hours of instruction through lectures, hands-on sessions, interactive exercises, and design projects to deliver the full Permaculture Design Certification.

How to vet a PDC

Hello Permies,

I am new to the forums and am planning on taking a PDC this summer or fall. How do I vet a course? I live in Wisconsin and will be practicing permaculture here. I want to take the best course possible, and am specifically interested in the design process as well as seeing some strong examples of how this applies in the midwest. I believe midwest permaculture is putting on a few courses this year and it seems like there might be something going on in milwaukee. However, most of the info that I found was on the website of the people putting on the course. Any info would be great.

New guy from Indiana says hi, is looking for permie roommates

Hi folks.
I'm glad I stumbled on to this forum after stumbling first upon Paul's Hugelkulture page. I have been transitioning from conventional mowing/landscaping and consumerism over the last 3-4 years. I started gardening and planting to eliminate the yard three years ago and found out about "permaculture" proper in 2011. I previously had a keen interest in off grid living, super insulated structures, earth homes, sustainability, and frugal living, but didn't realize there was a movement such as permaculture until last summer. So glad to have found about it and amazed I had never encountered the subject prior.

I look forward to interacting with you and learning from you. I wanted to provide a link to my craigslist posting as I am looking for a couple of permie roommates.
homestead opportunity on 5000 acre ranch via trade

How would you and your family like the opportunity to live in a new home on a 5,000 acre ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota?
I am interested in offering you this opportunity and possibly the opportunity to purchase your own land sometime in the future as part of a trade.
Here is what I have to offer; I will be completing a new home hopefully by June first. It will have all new appliances and will be heated with wood. It will be located on a 5,000 acre ranch and will have use of a large root cellar, a large garden area, several out building, 60 acres of pasture if you have horses, and it will be close to a creek, pond and large apple orchard. There is ample firewood available and the recreational and hunting opportunities are super. The ranch is less than 2 miles south of Wind Cave National Park so if you want to see what the area looks like just visit their web site.
Here is what I expect in return; I am looking first and foremost for a down to earth honest person or family that loves to cook and is very good at it. I want you to prepare 5 evening meals a week for me and possibly one other person, bake two loafs of bread a week in a bread machine that I will furnish, clean my small home once a week for 3 or 4 hours, and if you do my grocery shopping I will furnish you with an older pickup to use on and within 15 miles of the ranch. I eat all organic or natural foods and I eat no processed sugar or white flour so cooking with all wheat flour and honey can be a challenge.
This is not a paid position so you must have an outside source of income and some form of medicinal insurance. I do however have high speed internet on the ranch so if you are making money off the net that should be acceptable.
If you have any interest, send me an email and we can talk further.
me@gwtc.net
Thanks for your interest
Gary

Permaculture on Family Farms - Workshop at Michael Fields Institute March 3rd

Thought some of you might be interested in this. I'll probably be going. Just found out -

Permaculture on Family Farms

Mar. 3rd Saturday from 1pm to 4pm

Joel Kellum of King's Hill Farm began as an intern at Prairie Dock Farm in Whitewater in 1996. He continued working with Avalanche Organics as a farm partner from 1997-2007 on the Kickapoo River near Viola. In 2007, times shifted on the Kickapoo River and the floods washed the Kellum family to Kings Hill Farm in Mineral Point. In 2008, Joel looked to understand sustainable care of the land and became certified in Advance Permaculture Training for Teaching Permaculture. This knowledge led Joel to a new way of looking at the fields. He then planted a 7 acre edible forest and integrated these values into how he plans the vegetable fields.

Register here.
http://www.eventbrite.com/event/2677136387

Here;s the website for Joel's farm

http://kingshillfarm.com/

PDC in Midwest, sometime between February and May?

Greetings Midwesterners. I'm in Minnesota and am thinking it's finally time for me to take a PDC for real. I'd like to do it sometime between February and May, even though that will take some balancing with work stuff.

Would anyone by chance have any information about any courses in the Midwest during that period? The closer to Minnesota the better. My Internet searches haven't turned up anything suitable. (Btw, I'm tied up in late January, so the Midwest PDC won't work, and Nebraska, while technically Midwest, is further than I'd like to go.) Just looking for suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

New to the neighborhood

I'm new to the permaculture idea although I've been looking for that secret several years now. I was fortunate to find a piece of unimproved land six years ago and have spent the intervening time getting to know it, as much as you can with camping experiences that last a week or so at a time, seven months a year. I still have a place "in town" more than 40 miles away that requires more time than I wish, but perhaps I can use some of the concepts there as well to make it a more attractive spot for a potential buyer. Maybe I can create a small hugelkulture bed there this fall.

I'm located just above the 40th parallel in Indiana. So far there doesn't seem to be a lot of information available in my area. The local USDA office does set up informative seminars a few times a year, but short notice has kept my participation low. One that I was able to attend last year was dealing with "no-till" farming methods and it made me happy to know that my property hasn't been under a plow for at least 25 years.

Anyway, I just wanted to say "Hello". It would be nice to become acquainted with folks who know more and have experience. I'm still trying to learn my way around the forum. I hope the photo comes out and isn't too big.

Intermittent Mist Setup

I tried to root some blueberry cuttings under Intermittent misting. I took the cuttings around the first of August. I didn't get any to root. I had them misting for 20 seconds every 10 minutes from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM. When I checked the cuttings yesterday none had formed calisuses and the stems were brown in the part that was in the sand and perlite mix. The leaves were still green although some fell of has I dug them out to check. I was wondering what times you did yours? Is there a time when it is too late to start? Have you ever tried to root hard wood cuttings even. I guess at this point I will try again in the Spring. Any help appreciated.

I want to add that my grapevine cuttings, GoJi berry, and Some of the Thornless Blackberries did root with this method. They were taken at the same time. I just don't know why the blueberries didn't root.

macmike
mail<<at>>mikealrhughes<<dot>>com

[b]Permaculture Design Course

We invite you to join us at Singing Prairie Farm for a certified 76 hour Permaculture Design Course (PDC) taught by Permaculture Master Ethan Hughes. Ethan is the co-founder of the Possibility Alliance, an educational permaculture center and intentional community in Northeast Missouri. He has over 10 years experience in permaculture and sustainability, drawing from a rich diversity of knowledge spanning from Aprovecho Research Center and Lost Valley Educational Center in Oregon to The Ark in southern France and Ruskin Mill in England.

The 76 hour certified Permaculture Design Course will be held at Singing Prairie Farm in La Plata, Missouri. (Approximately 2 miles from an Amtrak train stop in La Plata.)

Course Description

This course will focus on temperate climate Permaculture and living out Permaculture’s ethics and principles. If you are planning to practice permaculture in North America or Europe and want to embody this incredible ecological science, then this course is for you. This course is not for hobby permaculturist, but rather for people who sincerely want to learn to meet their needs for food and shelter from the land. The 76 hours of course work required to receive a Permaculture Design Certificate will be covered over a two-week period, mixing hands-on and classroom study. All students are required to be present for the full two weeks if they wish to receive a certificate. All major topics of Bill Mollison’s book on Permaculture Design will be covered including:
1.	Philosophies and Ethics underlying permaculture.
2.	Basic permaculture principles.
3.	Patterns in Nature and how to use that in design
4.	Methods of design. How to go from a damaged piece of land to having a plan for moving forward with it.
5.	Climatic factors. We will focus primarily on the temperate bioregion.
6.	Trees, forests and why we want to mimic their systems.
7.	Water catchment, usage, importance and conservation.
8.	Soil, minerals, microorganisms, building new soil and preventing erosion.
9.	Earthworks: how to shape the land and help it achieve the goals we are aiming for.
10.	Aquaculture
11.	Natural Building
12.	Alternative systems: community living and other was of choosing to live that benefit both people and the planet.

Teaching Staff

Ethan Hughes is the primary teacher for the course. He is the co-founder of the Possibility Alliance, an educational permaculture center and intentional community in Northeast Missouri. He is currently pushing the boundaries of bioregional permaculture at the Possibility Alliance (P.A.), which is petroleum and electricity free. In addition, they practice the ethics of permaculture through using biological resources such as draft animals, aquaculture, wild edibles, goats, chickens, ducks, bees, food forests, gardens, grains as well as human power in the form of hand tools, bicycles, bike-powered grain mills, and a hand-crank blender. He has been teaching about ecology and conservation since 1990 and is excited about sharing the cutting edge of permaculture.

Additional teachers will assist with the course to share their specific area of expertise.

Course Site and Accommodations
The course will be held at Singing Prairie Farm in La Plata, Missouri. Singing Prairie is an organic family farm run by John Arbuckle, a ninth-generation American farmer, and his wife Holly and their two children, Noah and Zea. The farmhouse on the property was formerly owned by the Amish and is still electricity free. Singing Prairie Farm produces organic pasture raised eggs, broiler chickens, Thanksgiving turkeys, apple-fed pigs, small grains, Indian corn and vegetables. They practice simple living through food preservation, fermentation, and cheese-making and use vehicles run on used vegetable oil.

In keeping with the radical simplicity principles, the accommodations will be rustic. Each participant will bring their own tent, (in the event of storms, the farmhouse will be available.) Food will be local and organic whenever possible. Please let us know in advance if you have special dietary needs. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycle (if possible) for visits to neighboring farms and projects. If you would like to attend this course, but need different accommodations, you may book a room at the Depot Inn in La Plata. (Obviously, this cost in NOT included in the fee for the course.)

The Investment

Singing Prairie Farm and the Possibility Alliance (home of Permaculture teachers, Ethan Hughes) are examples of simple living and sustainability in practice. To that end, the course is being offered by Singing Prairie at a lower rate than most two-week Permaculture Design Courses in North America. The fee includes mostly organic meals and a place to camp. If you commit, please plan on coming for the full time, noon on Oct. 11 until noon on October 24th.

The Early Bird fee (registration prior to September 1, 2011) is $650.
The Regular fee (registration between September 1-October 11) is $725.

In keeping with the vision of creating systems that are abundant, 10% of the profits of the course will be donated to programs supporting the urban homeless in St Louis.

A non-refundable $200 deposit is required to secure your place for the course. Please make a check or money order payable to Singing Prairie Farm. Please mail it to:

Singing Prairie Farm
30552 Lantern St
La Plata, MO 63549

Questions? Please contact John or Holly Arbuckle at 660-332-4020.

Anyone in Minnesota?

Just wondering if there are any Minnesotans in here! I don't know anyone who is into this kind of stuff, and as a single female I'm finding it hard to even figure out where to start in implementing this in my life. I grow my own herbs/vegetables but I've only been doing that for 2 years and I haven't had a whole lot of luck either. I am currently living with my mom (as I can't get anything better than a minimum wage job right now), but someday I would like to live in an ecofriendly house, using solar or wind energy, recycling rainwater, cooking entirely organic from my own garden, and possibly even living in an RV like this guy: http://tynan.com/living-in-a-small-rv-introduction

So I'm just looking around for like-minded neighbors! :-)

"Summit Avenue church in St. Paul hopes to send a message: 'Feed the poor'"

A St. Paul church replants their front lawn with a permaculture garden to supplement food shelf stores. So many great highlights in this article, but here are three:

Rosario: Summit Avenue church in St. Paul hopes to send a message: 'Feed the poor'
By Rubén Rosario
...
Pending approval from the city's historic preservation committee, the church's garden at 797 Summit Ave. is designed to provide fresh produce for up to 15 families through a partnership with Neighborhood House's basic needs program.
...
"We thought it was a fabulous idea, and putting it right on Summit was a great way to highlight the need," said Mary Senkbeil, the committee chair. The church folks asked the food shelf folks, whose clientele is 40 percent immigrant or ethnically diverse, what to grow.
...
The Permaculture Research Institute for Cold Climate, a Minneapolis firm, was hired to come up with a design for the community garden that would look pleasing and also accomplish its humanitarian mission.

>>> I would definitely love to see more projects like this in my community, or pretty much anywhere. Check out the whole article if you get a chance; there are some lists of crops to help you envision what they are building along Summit Ave.

Natual building workshop! S.D

Pangea Farm 2011 BaleCob workshop

This ten day comprehensive workshop is unique in that we will be building an engineered code approved building, something that is not always easily accomplish in the natural building world. The design of this workshop is to teach participants everything they need to know to build their own BaleCob structure. We will be executing a design that enables the participants to learn about all aspects of BaleCob and Cob construction….by getting your hands dirty. We have designed this course to prepare anyone to owner-build their very own code-approved structure. Students will encounter a knowledgeable staff and a fun workshop in a beautiful setting. Students of all skill levels will enjoy this course and gain valuable knowledge about building, sub contractors and satisfying building officials. This workshop will cover all elements of code-approved natural building with an emphasis on: efficient and durable foundations, strawbale walls. roof construction and insulation, roofing, cob interior walls and thermal massing for your climate, framing-in windows and doors, plumbing, electrical systems (including photovoltaics). and all aspects of finishing (including cabinetry and earthen plasters and floors). Also covered in this 10 day workshop will be; composting toilets, graywater systems, building site orientation, bio-fuels and more.

How it works:
The days are long and hard work should be expected. We start our morning with a light breakfast followed by an hour or so of work where we will break for a full breakfast. Work will continue until lunch. An extended lunch will allow for personal and rest time or maybe a dip in the swimming hole. Our afternoons continue with a discussion period and more building. Our dinner and evening break is relaxing, and I encourage people to bring instruments for around the fire. Also our BaleCob sauna is available for workshop participants. Although physical work is involved in building the cottage, participants are encouraged to work at their own pace. You know your limits please respect them and no prior building knowledge or experience is required. Our goal is to provide a safe environment in which to learn and meet like-minded individuals.

Food:

Three vegetarian meals a day are provided as part of the tuition. The meals are delicious and wholesome. For some meals a local meat option will be available. If you have any dietary concerns or allergies please let us know ahead of time and in most cases we will be able to accommodate you.

Accommodations:

Camping is available on site and bathroom facilities with showers are provided. Campers and RVs are also welcome, however there are no hookups and please no generators.

The main focus of this BaleCob workshop is you, and providing a constructive learning environment to help you achieve your natural building goals. We encourage questions on all topics of natural building, BaleCob, Cob Strawbale etc. We encourage you to bring your house plans and design ideas along with your imagination. Natural building, specifically BaleCob and Cob, open up a whole new realm of building.

The money stuff:

Tuition for the workshop is $790. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is due upon completion of registration. The remaining balance is due any time before or at the start of the BaleCob workshop. Workshop size is limited and tends to fill up quickly.
PDC in Detroit. urban permaculture

http://pri-de.net/board/courses2011.php

studentservices@pri-de.org
313-647-4015

Instructors: Larry Santoyo and Keith D. Johnson
Date: March 27 - April 8, 2011
Location: Detroit

****HALF PRICE / 2-FOR-1****

Course Overview
The Permaculture Design Certificate course is an internationally recognized, seventy-two hour course serving as an introduction to permaculture design as set forth by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. It serves as a foundation for further permaculture work and study and is a prerequisite for the Diploma in Permaculture Design, offered through the Permaculture Institute. Credit for this course is now accepted by a growing number of universities around the world.

Agricultural Urbanism

Whether we call it Agricultural Urbanism, Urban Agriculture, Urban Farming or simply gardening, sustainable communities likely are not possible without locally produced food. A large part of CO2 emissions come from transportation, and in food production in particular, transport is a significant portion of the GHG burden and the 10 calories of energy needed to produce 1 calorie of food. Most cities will need to develop close relations with surrounding areas and be able to import their food from within a 30 to 100 mile radius. Detroit can grow a huge percentage of its food within city limits, decreasing the burden on surrounding cities and reducing CO2 emissions.

Course Content:
The format is designed to be taken in three modules to accommodate students who cannot or do not wish to attend a full PDC. The course sections can also be attended as one-, two-, or three-day workshops with the advisement of, and permission from, the Instructors. Send inquiries to: studentservices@pri-de.org

Part One

Fire, Water, Earth & Air... New Ecology and Sacred Geometry: Introduction to Permaculture Design and Natural Pattern Understanding

Day 1
Course description, group introductions, site orientation & house rules, Permaculture Design ethics, theory, Indicators of Sustainability.

This session will introduce the guiding philosophies and fundamental methodologies of Permaculture Design. Students will develop skills for recognizing the intrinsic characteristics of natural systems.

Day 2
Concepts and themes of design, origins of form, design methodologies, zones and sectors, base mapping, procedures of property design, design teams.

Permaculture design emphasizes the patterning of landscape, function and species relationships. Concepts of flow patterns, guilds, edge effects and harmonics are covered in this section with reference to specific site examples. Students will begin to formulate their own ideas for site improvement using Permaculture principles. Each student will be assigned to a Design team, and each team will be responsible for a final group presentation.

Day 3
Water & trees, Keyline Design, the hydrologic cycle, global climate, agro-forestry.

Water has been called the stuff of life. Without it, life is not possible. We will examine unique approaches to water harvesting, storage and utilization, and the role of trees and their energy in landscapes to manage water, store carbon and provide other benefits to agricultural zones.

Day 4
Urban Restoration, temperate and tropic zones, reversing erosion, management practices, difficult soils, compost, mulch, earthworks.

Cultivating Soil Fertility: The soil is alive! This workshop will cover key strategies for improving soil health naturally, and reducing the classic problems of pests, weeds and pathogens. Soil classifications and the role of soil in nutrient cycling and plant nutrition will be covered, along with restorative earth works and necessary equipment.

Part Two

Food, Water, Shelter... Earth-Friendly Techniques & Technologies: Building the Home Ecosystem.

The second Part will focus on techniques and technologies for designing & building a complete home ecosystem, restorative agriculture and natural building.

Day 5
Zone and Sector Planning, Zones 1 and 2, home scale projects, house design, green interiors, cooking, cooling, heating, building techniques; straw bale, cob, earthbags.

The Permaculture concepts of zones and sectors help land stewards and community designers make best use of a given site. We will cover the application of landscape profiles, base maps, and on-site analysis to assist in the logical orientation of design elements.

Day 6
Zones 3 and 4. Broadscale design, alternative transportation wind and solar energy, micro climates, working in other climates of the world, restoration of degraded lands.

This workshop will provide students with an overview of large property designs and renewable and affordable technologies with a Permaculture Design emphasis on how to assess their relative appropriateness to a given circumstance.

Day 7
Zone 5. Wilderness preservation, ponds, polycultures, water works, grey water systems, water harvesting.

Aquaculture and wetland environments are among the most productive on the planet. They nourish plant life, provide habitat, help recycle natural resources and more. This course section will survey the world's principal wetland habitats, both natural and manmade: marshes, estuaries, chinampas, Keyline ponds and constructed wetland.

Day 8
Zones 5 and beyond; EcoUrbanism Equals Wilderness Preservation.

Animals in Permaculture; animals and insects offer an astonishing array of intrinsic factors that can prove invaluable to a design. Holistic management of a site using animals.

Part Three

Creating Community... Self-Reliance, Eco-Villages and Eco-Economics: EcoVillage Design and Community Celebration

The final session will feature community building & "creating a sense of place," patterns of human dynamics, intentional communities & eco-villages. We will learn strategies for creating community-wide sustainability and methods for finding our own right-livelihoods.

Day 9
MicroVillage, Village design concepts, collaborative housing, design teams.

Eco-Villages and Invisible Structures. Various strategies for the design and development of intentional communities and eco-villages will be considered, including legal structures and sociological ramifications.

Day 10
Cooperatives, LLC, credit unions, trusts, EarthBanks, and local currencies, review of Principles.

EcoVillage design and strategies for Urban Links. Invisible Structures underlie the arrangement of human societies, and involve psychological, political and economic patterns. These hidden frameworks for human interaction link the Permaculturist and one's site to society at large, and exert a profound influence on how decisions are made and, how effective they can be over time.

Day 11
Products, services and skills, and community organizations.

A principal challenge to moving off the grid and into more holistic lifestyles is meeting one's daily needs. Ideas for establishing community-scale industry, bioregional associations, and for increasing self-sufficiency will be shared.

Day 12
Global issues and permaculture, starting a permaculture consultancy, starting a MicroVillage group, "Where do we go from here?", Designer apprenticeships, design presentations, Talent & Trade Show.

Course Details

Textbooks:

* Permaculture: A Designers Manual - Bill Mollison
* Gaia's Garden - Toby Hemenway

** It is not required to have the texts in hand for the course, but students should
acquaint themselves with them at some point. **

Location: TBD; determined by course size.

Accommodations:

* Option 1.Staff and students will be housed at the PRI-De and will sleep on the floor and should bring appropriate bedding.
* Option 2.
Wisconsin permies

Are you out there? I know I have met a few online over the last while, but I wanted to start a thread that was just about those of use forging ahead in the Badger State.

We all have a lot in common, but what exactly? There's a love of the environment -- like Gaylord Nelson, Aldo Leopold, Frank Lloyd Wright, and of course others whose names I wish I could recall right now. We share the Great Lakes, rivers, forests, and certainly our soils. Our state politics can be pretty different, for instance we fired Russ Feingold this year but our new odious governor might finally legalize raw milk. Community supported agriculture continues to grow. I keep seeing solar panels, solar hot water, hearing about people who have turned to growing fruit trees, vegetables, trees, chickens, grapes, and some, like us, who want to grow an entire ecosystem. I often see pieces of a growing community, but not the whole picture. And I definitely don't know anyone in my circle of friends, little nearby town, or anyone really at all who works with permaculture. Shocking now that I realize it! :-o

I will hold my own introduction until a comment coming soon, but please introduce yourself if you count Wisconsin as your home. I think it would be great to establish more local and regional connections, which means learning more about our climate, which means trading heirloom seeds and grafts and bulbs and cuttings. It could mean all kinds of great benefits for us and our state, a place that needs more permaculture than it needs anymore disposable pop culture.
