Rocket Mass Heaters: July 6-8 Riverside WA, August / October for Montana / northern Idaho?

Hi everyone,
thanks for the warm welcome to the Inland Northwest.

We are going to be doing at least one Rocket Mass Heaters workshop in eastern Washington this year: at Chris West's place near Riverside, July 6-8.

We are almost booked solid this summer, but we have room for one more weekend workshop in northern Idaho, or anywhere in Montana, as we begin an eastward tour in late July / early August.
Or just some nice homestay stopover options along Route 94. Could be combined with a private site consultation if you are thinking of improving your wood heat situation, or just a chance to hang out with fellow Permies.

We will be returning in mid to late October, and again, could use some homestay hosts or a small fireside event or two.

Thanks for your interest. Come on over to the Wood Burning Stoves forum if this is all new and strange and you want to learn more before replying.

Yours,
Erica and Ernie Wisner
http://www.ErnieAndErica.info

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Hello friends, fellow mycophiles, and fungal enthusiasts!
The Mycelial Network Collective is excited to officially announce plans for the 2nd ever Radical Mycology Convergence (RMC) and we want you to come! If you haven´t heard of the RMC before, you can read about first one (in 2011) at the link at the bottom of this email. Following up on the success of last year´s RMC we have hopes to expand the event this year to include even more events and we want you to participate!

What: As with the first RMC, we envision this unique event to be a volunteer-run gathering of mycologists, fungal enthusiasts, and Earth healers coming together to share skills and information related to the benefits of the fungal kingdom in terms of remediative properties as well as human uses. This weekend-long event will culminate in a remediation project (putting theory to practice) and will also be a unique chance to build community with like-minded mycophiles (aka mushroom lovers) from around North America. We are hoping to hold this years´s RMC in October or November somewhere along the West Coast. We are currently on the search for a location. If you have ideas or leads, please contact us.

Why: Because these skills need to get shared! We want to make information on fungi and their helaing powers accessible and tangible for as many people as possible without making it overly-heady or technical. By creating an encouraging space we hope to “bemushroom” all who attend.
Who: The Mycelial Network Collective, organizers of the RMC, would like to cordially invite anyone interested in participating in this event to come and learn, help out, or teach!

http://radicalmycology.wordpress.com/

north side of house - 8800 ft

I am new to permaculture, currently taking a design course. I live in CO at 8800 feet and am looking for some suggestions on what to do with the north side of my house. It's always very cold in that room. We lost 2 pines due to wind over the last few years which used to help with wind and some insulation. Does anyone have a suggestion of what to do around that part of the house? Trees take a while to grow, not to mention create a fire ladder to the house. Any ideas?

Grow Ritzville!

Imagine a sorta backwards little town, isolated from most of society's more advanced ideas and ways-of-thinking, located many miles from anywhere along a major interstate highway. A town with history (founded late 1800's), multi-generational family bloodlines, and "traditional" ways of doing things ("we've always done it that way"). Imagine that over time, a sorta "caste system" has developed, with landed-families at the top of the heap, business owners next, blue-collar type workers beneath that, and finally partially-employed and unemployed filling in the base. Can you see how such a small town might be quite resistant to change of almost any sort??

Imagine Ritzville. Town of about 1700 surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of "big-Ag" wheat farms. A town with three failing water wells, proven leaking water distribution system, and a struggling sewer infrastructure. A town that increased the number of residents living below the poverty level exceeding 25% in 2011! The town's "ruling class" biggest concern is promoting a new "Wheat Museum" and promoting "growth for prosperity".

Does something seem out of balance to you?

There's a new, grass-roots movement afoot in Ritzville. One that can address many of the stagnant "business as usual" approaches to being a "community". It's called "Grow Ritzville!" and the "grow" part is directly aimed at healthy, local, pesticide/insecticide/commercial fertilizer free food production. All this based on Permaculture ideals, concepts, and techniques.

An excerpt from the new web site:

The mission of Grow Ritzville! Is to foster a powerful self- directed movement within the community of Ritzville that engages residents through education and hands on experience to grow their own affordable organic produce thereby increasing nutritional wealth, education and emotional prosperity.

Grow Ritzville! is a collective of private land owners who seek to transform their own properties by drawing from the principals of permaculture and applying expertise in three areas:
- Science
- Social Action
- Success!

Check it out! Your comments, ideas, and even well-intended criticisms are welcome! = )
http://www.growritzville.com

Looking for employment

Hello Folks,

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post about this. However, I am Tate Smith. I am graduating from the University of Wyoming in May with a degree in Rangeland Ecology and Watershed Management.
Another Mission:

I just remembered another mission!

What: a regional variety of Northern Bugleweed, Lycopus uniflorus. A great deal of attention has been given to the Chinese Artichoke in permaculture circles, it is an unusual edible tuber from the mint family. Less know are the edible tubers of Northern Bugleweed, the only other mint family root vegetable I know of. I've never identified this plant, much less tasted it. But native people used to eat it for desert- it must be good.
Where: Swampy places in Southern BC or Northern WA. Apperently it grows with cattails and other riparian vegetation.
When: I have no idea when the seed ripens. Presumably one could transplant tubers any time durring the dormant season.

Vital Botanical Missions for Bold and Intrepid Souls

Vital Botanical Missions for Bold and Intrepid Souls
For the Greater Good of Inland Northwest Permaculture

I am of the belief the best plants for our polycultures are localy adapted wild plants, which can't presently be bought from nurseries. Another post I made in the gardening forum made me realize I have a mental list of botanical 'missions' I'd like to make, to obtain seed from prime locations around the country. The seed could be propagated by a trusted gardener and shared. But there isn't any reason I couldn't have help with these missions. In fact, I'm sure many of you have your own missions in mind. Maybe we can help each other out. I know that we live all over, and many of us travel.

These missions, should you choose to accept one, would be of great service to permaculture in the Inland Northwest. If any of these missions interests you, I can provide information and garden space. But you wouldn't neccesarily have to work with me. And if I should suddenly die, I'll feel better knowing that other permies know about these resources. I may think of more later, but here are some missions:

Where: Pullman and Palouse, Washington
What: Remarkable Salisfy, Trogopogon mirus. This beautiful wildflower is a rare natural hybrid between widespread weedy yellow salisfy and purple salisfy, the garden vegetable that brought us ‘mammoth sandwich island’. This plant must be examined as a wild root vegetable for our polycultures. I suggest enlisting the help of a local botany professor. Get the seeds to trusted gardeners for propagation. http://biology.burke.washington.edu/herbarium/imagecollection.php
When: Whenever the large dandelion-like seed heads ripen, probably in mid-summer. Watch for common yellow salisfy to ripen.

Where: Canyons of the Southeastern Oregon Desert
What: The most Northwestern wild specimens of Silver Buffaloberry, Sheperdia argentia. This is a nitrogen fixing shrub with very tasty berries. My favorite candidate for apple interplant. It is a native alternative to Russian Olive. It is desert adapted. Gather the best fruits from a diversity of the best bushes. Select types for saline soils and non-saline soils.
When: sometime in the summer, when fruits ripen.

Where: Orofino, Upper Clearwater River, Idaho area
What: The most prolific stands of wild sweet cherries I’ve seen anywhere in the region. Select for fruit quality, drought tolerance, and diverse ripening times. Also in your area, wild cherry plums, European plums, apricots, apples, blackberries.
When: Late June-July

Where: Snake River and Tributaries Upstream of Lewiston
What: We desperately need tap the botanical resources of this area. This is the epicenter of our region’s wild fruit diversity. Old World fruit trees have been naturalizing here for hundreds of years. One of these days, I’m going to float these rivers and collect seed along the way. This is probably the best way to access this extremely rugged country. Look for: mulberries, apricots, cherries, plums, cherry plums, walnuts, pears, and maybe peaches. Ideally we’d get the seed to several nursery locations around the region.
When: Late June-August, late September for walnuts

Where: Foothills of the Eastern Cascades, from Ellensburg South
What: The northernmost stands of Garry Oak in the Interior. The northernmost grove is supposedly on the Yakima River near Ellensburg. Select seed for palatability (taste them, aim for less bitter), yield at early age, drought tolerance, and cold tolerance. Collect from high and low altitudes. We need to aid the northward movement of oaks in light of accelerating climate change. Seed must be planted quickly after collection.
When: September

Where: the Black Hills, South Dakota
What: Some of the Northwesternmost Burr Oaks. Select for acorn size, palatability, yield at early age, drought tolerance, hardiness. Collect both tree and scrub forms. These may be the best food acorns for our region. Seed must be planted quickly after collection.
When: September

Where: Northern Utah, foothills
What: the northernmost stands of Gambel Oak. A good hardy, edible oak, see instructions for other oaks.

Where: Idaho?
What: find the famous Sweet Idaho Bur Oak!

Where: City of Rocks, South Central Idaho
What: The northernmost Single Leaf Pinyon Pine Forests. Select for yield at an early age. This may be one of the few food trees suited for places too dry to grow Ponderosas.
When: September, production can be geographically sporadic.

Where: Boise, Idaho
What: Giant Persimmons, desert apricots, Kentucky Coffee Tree. There is a persimmon tree as big as a ponderosa pine on 11th and Fort. It fruits abundantly and obviously does well in our climate. Wild apricots in the foothill canyons, on the road to the dump from town. An amazing arboretum east of downtown with all kinds of food trees, and a large Kentucky Coffee Tree Specimen.

What: Wild parsnips
Where: I don’t know! Wild parsnips have been documented growing in the Inland Northwest. I’m still looking for a patch. Please help me find them.

Where: The Mojave Desert/Great Basin Desert Transition, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
What: Hybrid Oaks, hardy Prickly Pears, others. Screw Bean Mesquite? There are many great wild food plants in this region. Helping these plants move North, as the climate changes, will be to our benefit. Gambel Oaks hybridize with Live Oaks here. This hybrid is hardy and will grow with Joshua Trees in sand! The Timbisha Shoshone are the native people of the hottest driest desert on the continent, Death Valley. They have a food forest! It’s a screw bean mesquite orchard in the sand dunes of the valley floor. This is an excellent staple food. This tree might do well in the hottest, driest parts of our region, on the saline soils of the Lower Columbia.

Where: Northern New Mexico, extreme Southern Colorado, foothills
What: New Mexico Locust. All the uses of Black Locust, but smaller, and even more drought tolerant! Could probably grow in our treeless regions.
When: collect dry pods in September

Challenges for the Inland NW- Find wild reproducing stands of:
-chestnuts
-almonds (don’t believe me? http://biology.burke.washington.edu/herbarium/imagecollection.php)-riverside grape
-interior salal
Or any of the other plants on my master list:
https://sites.google.com/site/humanhabitatproject/choosing-our-team/food-forest-plant-list

Missions Completed:
-I live near what I think may be the northernmost stand of Curl-Leafed Mountain Mohagany. It is very hardy desert adapted N fixing small tree. No edible uses, but wildlife browse it. Contact me for seed.
-I found a wild grove of Siberian pea shrubs, in the middle of nowhere, growing beneath a ponderosa pine canopy, I’ll try to collect seed next year.
-The biggest, most productive ginkgo tree I’ve ever found is in the Sun Lakes State Park Campground, near Soap lake Washington.
-Spokane’s Finch Arboretum has many good plants, including Cornelian Cherry, Chinese Dogwood, Italian Alder, and watercress.
-I have local sources for localy adapted fruit. I’m greedy with the seed. But I might hear an offer.

-Kyle in Kettle

Affordable in-town home in Northeast Oregon well started on the permie path

My in-town home is for sale in beautiful La Grande, Oregon. You can see a full description and pictures on my craigslist ad http://eastoregon.craigslist.org/reo/2558397554.html

I've put in lots of perennials (peach, cherry, kiwi, berries, etc) and have converted most of the lawn to garden space. The heavy garden work is mostly done! It's in a great neighborhood within walking distance of downtown, the Farmer's Market, library and Eastern Oregon University.

La Grande is a small town of about 12,000 people on the dry side of the Cascades. Our valley is mostly farmland surrounded by the Blue and Wallowa Mountains. The Eagle Cap Wilderness is in our backyard. We are 4.5 hours from Portland and 3 hours from Boise. It's close enough to the cities to take advantage of what they offer and far enough away to discourage those that aren't really into rural living.

I've read recently that the rural areas of the Pacific NW are considered some of the best places to dig in for the coming economic challenges. I'd say I have to agree. I don't normally promote our area, preferring it keep it to myself but if there's anywhere I feel comfortable doing so it would be here. We need more folks like all of you! I'd be pleased to attract some permies to the area.

I love it here. I'm not moving away, just simplifying life by selling one house and moving to the other place I own on the edge of town.
cheers to all,
Sue

10 acres and house for sale, Western Colorado

Hi All,

I just wanted to mention a property I know of for sale. It is 10 acres with shares of water to go with it. It is in peach and cherry orchards. The woman who lives there is in her mid 80s and wants to be done with the orchards. "I always wanted a little house on a hill" she said to me.

This is prime agricultural land, in orchards probably 50 - 60 years. It comes with the equipment ot run the orchards.

She has been trying to sell for more than 2 years, and probably would take any offer that would get her a little house on a hill in this local market. She told me she was considering taking the back hoe and knocking all the trees down, as it would make the place more sale able.

For someone who wants to farm this is ideal. A house to live in and a job to do. True it is not in permaculture yet, but eventually the conventional farms will go to more sustainable methods. could be converted, same way a person converts raw land to permaculture.

Anyone seriously interested I could get more information.

p

Unique Opportunity in NE Oregon (Joseph, Wallowa County)

I have a newer passive solar home on 160 acres (3 tax parcels) near joseph oregon at elevation 5200'. it is in a mature forest with some open grasslands throughout with nearly one mile of stream frontage (actually an irrigation canal-no water rights). there is a large hydro potential ($300K/yr) with infrastructure largely in place from when Pacific Power dismantled an existing power plan due to a lawsuit. The project goes for FERC processing next month. The property also borders a small volunteer downhill ski area (www.skifergi.com), but has a larger potential as a x-c ski facility and summer campground with possible guest cabins (altern. building?). Other ventures could include a solar timber kiln (have trees and mill), mushroom cultivation (many alder trees for production), morel collection, among others. i am interested in greenhouse market grow (high tunnels with ground source heat pump for year-round grow) with adjacent restaurant. very good energy, serene, and private with panoramic views of the wallowa mountains down into little sheep creek and of the buttes toward Imnaha would make for a great healing retreat, corporate retreat or space for a writer or artist. all ideas welcome! brian 541 432 2752

Land for sale in Wyoming

Hello, everyone. I've been lurking for several weeks and absolutely love this site. Thank you Paul!

I have a 70 acre piece of undeveloped land for sale in Wyoming, north of Rock River (which is NW of Laramie). It is actually two 35 acre parcels (now considered one property by Albany County), the long sides running east and west.

When I bought land in this area in 1999, I fully intended to build an earthship. The land is mostly clay, with lots of rocks (making it difficult to dig with handtools). This piece of land slopes somewhat to the south and more to the east (perfect for passive solar). The eastern short end is bordered by a very large ranch, so will unlikely see any development in that direction.

There is a seasonal (very) pond usually present during a moist spring, and a seasonal stream. While camping on this land, I have witnessed toads, prairie chickens (grouse), kestrel, bald eagles, lots of other birds, jackrabbits, coyotes, antelope, and deer, and I’ve seen tracks from elk. Due to a recent tower near Rock River, I am even able to use my cell phone (Verizon) so there is also the potential for internet access (I use a Verizon connection at home).

There are no trees, power lines, gas lines, massive towers yet (there is a possibility that power lines will run through the area in the near future), or (unfortunately) well maintained roads. There is no well, and according to one well driller, good water is about 300’ below the surface. This would be an ideal location for rain water catchment.

There are other people living in the area year round. The nearest ‘neighbor’ at present is a couple of miles away. There is also an apparently restored log cabin just a few parcels to the north. The owner makes a bit more progress each year.

Due to all the clay in the soil, I am seriously considering revising my earthship plans (I do have another parcel in the same area) to include cob or earthbags.

The first picture is a view of the seasonal pond (6-11-11) taken from the NW corner of the property facing due East. The pond is located in the western 35 acres.

The second picture is a sample of springtime vegetation. Notice the clay?

I haven't figured out how to post more than two pictures, but anyone truly interested in purchasing this property can contact me through this site. I really hate to give up this property, but life throws us all curve balls on occasion.

Mobile chicken processing unit in Montana

http://www.chicken.coop/mobile-processing-unit/

"Mobile Processing Unit
Growers who want to process a large number of birds, will find that the new Mobile Processing Unit will increase the efficiency of processing and fit within certain state requirements for selling the birds directly to consumers as well as to retail and wholesale markets. Every MPU user will have to undergo training to use the unit.

The mobile poultry processing unit consists of a truck and trailer. Depending on the user’s experience processing birds, it has the capacity to process 50-300 birds per day. Each year, coop members will work out a calendar and schedule for the MPU so that it travels around the state, moving to different regions on predetermined dates. It will be essential to schedule poultry hatching, growing and processing to coordinate with the dates the MPU is in a particular region. Special accommodations for moving the MPU to a single location can be prohibitively expensive.

An annual hands-on training will be conducted to teach new members how to use the unit. Only members who have attended an annual training are eligible to use the MPU.

Contact Mark Rehder of Farms for Families at 406-222-7585 to arrange to use the MPU or find out about training opportunities.

Until recently, the lack of processing facilities has been the biggest barrier to local poultry production in Montana and most of the rest of the country. The Montana Poultry Growers Coop, in collaboration with other funders, are excited to bring local, pasture-raised poultry back to Montana with the Mobile Processing Unit."

Mike Oehler taking interns/community

Those who would like to apply for an internship phone me at 800 328-8790. Will also consider forming a community -- This technological civilization is looking shakier every day; circle the wagons. As I think Paul will attest, I have 45 wonderful acres, four livable houses (two more under construction) and 42 years experience homesteading. Especially interested in carpentry skills and ladies who love to cook -- we are known for decent housing and great meals (building crews work on their stomachs).
