living work exchange

We just bought a property with 10 acres of land in upstate NY (a little less than 5 acres of cleared land and the rest is wooded). There is also a creek running through the property year-around. We would like to make it a self sustaining farm. Since my husband works in IT, he will only stay here during weekend and holidays. I need 1 or two people who can help me with all the works need to be done in order to make it a working farm. I am looking for people with farming experience such as organic gardening, installing fencing, caring animals, or are handy men type as we will need to build a greenhouse etc. You can have your own room or share it if there are two of you. There is indoor bathroom and internet access. Lunch will be included. I will pay a weekly stipend of $100. Any suggestions and ideals will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Permaculture/Biodynamic/Natural Building Intern/Communal living opportunity Port Townsend WA

Hello! We are looking for a skill builder/renter…

What it is: An affordable alternative learning opportunity to gain skills in permaculture, biodynamics, natural building and living in Community. Some specifics you might learn include: plant propagation, building with cob, butchering chickens and lambs, animal feed management, basic construction, fermentation, organic gardening, grafting, pruning, canning and food preservation, permaculture design.

At the moment, we are not looking for another member, but a renter who is motivated to learn, work with us on projects, and help us learn how to teach and share skills. We are specifically looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic female who wants to spend the season working with us, gaining skills and engaging in our lifestyle.

We believe the best way to learn and to benefit the most from the opportunity is to live it out day to day. So we have on offer a private bedroom in the common house. That said we are looking at this as our opportunity to help you gain as much as possible so we ask that your stay here be focused on the farm, not another outside job.

We are offering a month-month lease, for up to 6 months, so that we can give another skill-builder an opportunity.

Housing: $160-275 per month + utilities + work trade. Unfortunately we dont have any way to make the internship free yet, property tax, cost of materials, utilities, and general capitalism still have us under their thumb. But we are doing our best to provide a inexpensive option. We want to make sure if you are paying you do walk away from here with more than what you came with.

Who We Are: Earlwood, a four-person fledgling radical community 5 miles outside of Port Townsend, WA working together to create a permaculture farmstead. Agriculturally based, we believe agriculture is a way of life focusing on the interdependence of humans, plants, animals, soil and the encompassing ecosystem where humans act as designers, in which no part is greater than the next, but view the farmstead as a unique biological entity. Our work here is to build an ecological kingdom upon a mountain of poop. In doing so, we close loops and create an alternative to the current production, control, regulation, inspection and distribution of food. Our guiding forces are the principles of biodynamics, permaculture, and deep ecology.
Currently the four of us live with two donkeys, 3 ewes, 5 lambs, 3 goats, one cat, one dog (Earl) and 37 chickens.

Do heed, we are just in the begging stages of building this kingdom and have only been on the land for a short time. Believing that nothing should go to waste we currently produce only some of our food, we food bank/dumpster a huge portion of the rest, we use composting toilets, build mostly out of trash, are mostly bike powered and share only one grease car. We also are a food sharing household that shares at least 5 meals a week, if not all of them.

We are all working hard to not have a hierarchical structure, and to reverse the general trend of oppression. To address this we do have consensus (which you will learn about) meetings twice a month, and a work load that is organized by the group.

When: May 1, for the growing/building season and possibly longer.

Why? To gain experience in permaculture, biodynamics and natural building and make friends along the way! To work together to build a better world.

Give us a call at 541 two three one 0340 or email zinginginger at gmail dot com

Permaculture 6 Month Internship at Rak Tamachat, Thailand

June 2012 Longterm Internship

Rak Tamachat, Panya Project’s sister site in Korat, is now accepting applications for interns.

These positions start in June 2012 and run for 6 months.

Interns will essentially be asked to participate as part of the staff of our developing education centre and farm. We plan to be conducting many integrated permaculture projects, and you will find yourself delving into everything from implementation of organic garden beds, to the construction of natural buildings, from working with short term volunteers, to feeding and caring for the animals, from graphic/social media design to mulching the food forest.

Work requirements are a minimum of 5 days a week, 6 hours a day with some occasional weekend duties (such as: watering garden beds, flipping compost, feeding animals, etc). Each Intern is asked to be the main caretaker for a certain area of the land/system, inspiring long- term vision, ownership and responsibility. You are given the freedom to make a genuine contribution to the future of our farm systems. As an intern, you are sure to get a full plethora of experiences from your time here!

The farm is approximately 50 acres located in a rural part of central Thailand, about 3.5 hours NE of Bangkok and 1.5 hours outside of Korat, Thailand’s second largest city.

Our plan is to implement our Permaculture design, and will see a transformation of the place in a major way. Our Master Plan is a dynamic, living document, and we encourage new, forward-thinking designs to be added to continually grow and produce a replicable, abundant system. We hope to see a number of major changes over the next year:

1) the site’s low diversity ecology moving towards a rich diverse, nature friendly system.

2) The farm systems go from barely breaking even to a healthy profit (by reducing costs, intertwining systems and finding new markets)

3) Increase the health and beauty of the landscape.

4) and to make the climate of the land more liveable.

We are looking for people who already have some permaculture experience, and are currently working on their permaculture diploma or are looking to get some solid permaculture practice. There is also the opportunity that an internship could develop into one of our paid (stipend) management positions. Our internship is intended as a hands on learning experience, rather than a workshop to be taught things day in and day out. You are able to guide your own learning experience and are sure to learn a ton during your time here.

Our design and community are ambitious, exciting and holistic. We look forward to seeing some amazing permaculture happen as the year goes
by!

Costs – The Internship is for a minimum of 6 months and requires financial payment. This cost helps to pay for your food and other resources associated with having you on site. We are not making any money by hosting you. We genuinely want to make an even trade of your work time for the amount of learning available. It is our goal to make this trade a worthwhile one and ensure that you go away having learned a ton, and had a lot of fun! With this as our focus, we are in the process of deciding what is a fair request, so please bear with us and we will provide more details as soon as we are confident your payments will be contributing sufficiently, while being fair and reasonable.
We do require the first $200 of this fee to be decided is a non-refundable deposit and secures your place as an intern. This amount is payable upon being accepted and cannot be refunded, even if the internship is terminated during the first 30 days evaluation period.

How to Apply

Please email thefarmcq@gmail.com or visit the Panya Project website for more details and to fill out the application form.

lookin 4 volunteers wwoofers & info for a organic farming project in the palm groves of Zagora,Maroc

Hi there, i really enjoy the info i can find here on permies, and when i stumbled over the wwoofer website and started searching on the net for more info again i landed here, so i will make my first try right here. We just rented on a long term basis one hectar (10000m2) in the palm grove near Zagora, open google maps and copy-paste the line beneath and you are there:

Zaouia De Sidi Elmokhtar Ben Ali, Souss-Massa-Draa, Maroc

We will be back in germany by the end of next week and start preparing all material and info needed to come back to zagora by the end of october. so in case anybody wants to give us a hand with info, help of any kind, and if i would be only some seeds we d appreciate very much. wwoofers or interns can stay with us for as long as they want, we have 6 spare rooms as the site is an ancient camping space.
In the beginning i ll have to renew shower and toilets as they are in a catastrophic state, so please whoever is interested to spend some weeks or months in the sahara remember that until spring 2013 it will be VERY spartanic to say the least. And most of the heavy work has to be done in the first months too.
There will be locals who ll work there but still, each hand will help and spreading the knowledge how to grow fruits and veggies organic, high quality and with less water will help to stop the constant growth of the use of chemicals in morocco and help people to become less dependant on imports and the state.
I experimented already with agnihotra, orga urkult and several other ways to increase growth and quality of plants and want to do that in a bigger scale down there, so the local farmers can see and learn from the project by watching and touching and through not some shallow presentations they wouldn t visit anyway.
Back home i ll make a small webpage with lots of pictures and details so please give me until mid april to set that up, thanks.
We lived in morocco already several years as i scouted there for german companies and my wife is actually a real tamazight berber, so we do have the chance to open quite some doors where others don t even see them. languages spoken are german, french, english, arabic, tamazight, spanish and italian.
Whatever kind of info you d like to have or give, just send a message and we ll see how we can help each other, thanks a lot,
my best wishes from a sunny rabat
mike

WANTED: LAND STEWARDS

Help transform a lovely country property into a beautiful, sustainable, self-sufficient homestead.

LOCATION: 17 miles north of Las Vegas, NM in the Manuelitas Valley. We recently placed a 3BR, 2BA doublewide with a large family room on the land and totally renovated, insulated and stuccoed it. It has all appliances, a fireplace, a large deck and a wood stove. And there is already an excavated site close to the house for a fish pond. Check out our website for more details and photos: www.lovely-country-home.com

Now we’re looking for land stewards, people who really want to live on the land and transform the property, especially putting in a healthy garden and planting fruit trees. If you don't have construction/handyperson skills and Iwe have to hire someone to put up a roof over the deck and build a carport and later a greenhouse, then the rent will be more or less what we’re asking now - $975 a month. But if you do have the skills then Iwe’re willing to knock the rent down to $600 a month in exchange for 3-4 days of work a month.

We sincerely want this 5 1/2 acre homestead to become a small part of the huge solution necessary in creating a more healthy, beautiful and sustainable world. Thank you.

Please contact: David Pascale at 505 992-8670 or davidpascale@earthlink.net

Permaculture, Wildcrafting, and Rewilding apprenticeship on Olympia Penninsula!

Hello all,

I am new here, though I have read posts on here, and know some of you from gatherings. Thankyou to the hosts for providing this place to share!

I am introducing an ongoing apprenticeship opportunity this spring and summer at Cedar Bog Forest Farm. Cedar Bog Forest Farm is a rugged forest farm/forest garden near old-growth and clear-cut, forest, and river, garden, and the Ocean. The farm is largely a delightful Cedar bog with huckleberries, salal, blueberries, and crabapple, with extensive forests and a modest inner and extended outer gardening areas. There are a multitude of opportunities for harvesting, gardening, fishing, and earth skills. I am planting a permaculture garden featuring perennial vegetables, self seeding annuals, medicinal herbs, insectory plants, and dye plants in no-till garden beds fertilized with bio-charred hardwoods shells and bones, fertilizer, and goat and elk poo. If planting lots of wierd seeds gets you excited talk to me.

The Apprenticeship

30 hours a week of gardening, crafting, diy building, and education. Cost: $200 a month. Available April/May through September/October. The focuses of this Apprentiship are:

Permaculture gardening and no-till garden bed establishment.
Perennial Vegetables and other useful persistant plants.
Setting up an earth camp where Apprentices can camp and we can practice friction fires, processing, and crafting.
Building Wig-wams if there is interest while the sap is still running in the Willows (its just about to start).
Practicing earth skills: making baskets, working on fire, tracking,
Wildcrafting: especially cascara bark, cedar bark, wild greens and herbs, and never ending huckleberries, blueberries and crab apples.
Visiting the Ocean within a few miles to fish or collect.
Producing biochar to beneficially balance out the forest soil for permaculture potential.

Time and Effort:

There is much to do on the farm, and the weather is quite chaotic so near the Ocean, the maritime breezes blowing in rain or sun in turns. The land tells us what needs to be done. Sometimes it is the time of the swift gathering up of laundry and firewood before 6 hours of drying sunlight is counteracted by rain. In the summer it will gathering herbs before the sun beats down on them. When we work toward a goal we often work hard. In many years of observing my motivations and creative impulses I see that people in an helping capacity are most motivated by what will help them to be the best person in their community, and toiling away on someone else's goals doesn't often do that. So I am incorporating "earth-time" and personal crafting into the apprenticeship. I ask that you dedicate most of your week to this farm, but some of the time we will be doing pleasant meditative crafting or wildcrafting, and sometimes we will be working at "getting in the harvest" speed. I count several days of the week toward this time, but will ask that we move together following the land and what it has for us in terms of harvests how "hard" we need to work. There is a line from the Fleet Foxes song "Helplessness Blues": "If I had an orchard, I'd work till I'm raw, If I had an orchard, I'd work till I'm sore." Well its not quite my orchard, but I have been friends with the landowner for a long time, and am looking forward to harvesting this year and returning to the garden in the future to see and work with all the perennials returning. In a likewise way we hope to share with you the harvests of the land, in a way that is somewhat between "having" an orchard, and working for one.

For example, I intend for us to work together on a sizeable cedar bark harvest, but in the process I will teach harvesting and processing techniques, as well as making baskets, and you could take home cedar bark baskets or mats and a munch of materials for future projects.

So for an average maybe 2 days a week permaculture gardening/1 day a week wildcrafting/1 day a week crafting/processing/1 day a week earth building. Some of these times will be on earth-time, perhaps working meditatively on a craft, or wildcrafting, gardening or earth skills: living the skills. Some of these times will be with a goal in mind. At least a full day a week or more in hours will be in hands-on instruction.

Perennial Vegetables:

Perennial vegetables are the ultimate anti-Monsanto. They take less time to establish than an orchard or forest garden, and can easily be planted and harvested without heavy machinery or processed with expensive tools. In fact they cant: it just doesn't work to machine monocrop perennials. They don't have predictable heights or harvesting times or storage. Short term genetic engineering wouldn't work, medium term might be at the expense of the plant's longevity (and perenniality), and long term projects just don't happen much, especially for things that aren't profitable. So perennial vegetables are safe from genetic engineering and monocrop growing. Their use has been mainly by indigenous societies from to Peru to India, Vietnam to Indonesia, and in village cultures in Europe of past and sometimes present. Indigenous peoples cultivated perennial vegetables in Cascadia: Camas, onions, greens, bisquit-roots, etc... Why don't they now? The story of why don't they know is the story of colonization, and the implimentation of Industrial Revolution European style farming. In old Europe, especially France, perennial vegetables were a popular part of cuisine, and are still used today. In Peru, 5 types of tubers can be grown together that repel the pests of eachother, but tubers are looked down on as a poor persons food. Grow perennial vegetables in solidarity and communion with our global brothers and sisters!

So I have a cooler full of perennial vegetables seeds, many that I wildcrafted, as well as scores of different seeds of plants that are applicable to permaculture gardening, and this will be an important part of our work out here.

Earth Skills

I have taken many classes, and taught different skills for several years. I just want to do it, make stuff and live well. What we do together depends somewhat on you. Are you really interested in carving or basketry? Lets go harvesting and cure some materials. Really into animal processing: lets build a processing area and help manage the rabbits or look for other respectfully harvested animal products. Want to camp out in a tent and just geek out on plants an berries all summer? You can dry up stores of berries for yourself. Love friction fires? Lets gather different woods and try them out. If we get interest soon we can build wigwams to have a communal camp area. Love the sea? Lets go there whenever we can... I have taught forest ecology, wild edibles, wildcrafting, herbalism, aidless navigation, sensory awareness games, primitive shelters, animal tracking and cedar bark basketry to kids, teens, and adults. I have studied many more things. You have studied even more things. Together we can do whatever we intend.

The Rugged Arrangements:

We are off the grid, and this is probably the most remote place in Western Washington that is low elevation. Currently I have a dirt floor and have to walk to get water, shower, and charge stuff. There is "some" phone reception. We need people who not only have experience with this kind of living, but thrive on these edges. I for myself am so happy to hear the ocean and river as I got to sleep, that makes up for alot. We need people who are already comfortable shitting in a hole, working in the wet at times, wheelbarrowing water and firewood around, camping for extended periods, and being generally prepared for anything. The Rugged Arrangements that we have lived in have also changed us to value things differently: we use some civilized products to forge a life that is growing this forest and growing us. We sometimes have more in common with rednecks or liberal college hippies than the urban primitivist punk kid, and ask that you not judge us for eating local or sustainable-ish meat, cutting down trees sometimes, and using gas to be able to stay out here. In fact the best fit apprentices would likely have a vehicle.

Crafting as an Income Opportunity

If you like to make things, and would like to sell some things online, we could sell small crafts directly from the farm. I have an account on etsy that is hooked up through a paypal account that I can draw cash from an ATM with my paypal debit card. If you aren't ready yet to do Etsy, or need time to get the bank stuff set up, you can sell through me as a "member of my shop". Ostensibly we could receive notification of a purchase, and get it down to the mailbox, and then get paid in town at any ATM.

In Sum

If you have read all this and resonate with where we are at and feel you would learn alot from this arrangement, contact me via e-mail and I would love to hear about your dreams and aspirations for living and working with the land.

Thuja

thujarua@gmail.com

looking for permie info...

Hello my wife and I are looking for information/resources about Permaculture communities to plug into, to work, share, learn, live. We are currently in Northern Idaho, but plan on moving east to Vermont. We both are avid permies with experience working with the land and community. As I said, we are planning on moving to Vermont but would potentially stay on the west coast or anywhere in between for a while if there was a permaculure site/community that we found to be a good fit with our ideals. Thanks for your help. Hugh B.

We are looking to buy 10 acres minimum for 2 homes, orchard, land for cultivation and permaculture design and in the future look to build a green school/Steiner based school and "slow" retreat centre encouraging people to slow down - yoga, meditation, harvesting their own veggies from the garden to cook communally, no internet or phone during their stay. We currently run www.evolvewellnesscentre.com in London which has a strong focus on sustainability education. We planted a roof garden on our studio using permaculture principles last April and have had an allotment for several years.

We are looking to help support like minded people with their land/work on their house in exchange for lodging and board. We have practical knowledge of planting/harvesting and some DIY experience. Please get in touch if you know of any such opportunities or are looking to network with good people from a similar perspective. We would love to hear from you.

Thanks!
Adrian, Corinne and Kevin

2 spots left! Internship in New Mexico

2012 Sustainable Skills Internship

Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center Internship 2012
May 18 to July 12
Cerrillos, NM

This may be more enjoyable to read on our webpage: http://www.ampersandproject.org/?page_id=20

The internship is a very special time at Ampersand. Our site comes to life as amazing folk gather for an intensive learning and community living experience. We share in a lifestyle that is abundant with the essentials.

Our rustic living conditions include, solar electricity, running rainwater (frugal use is expected with both), hot showers, an indoor bathroom with bucket style humanure composting toilets, and wireless internet access. We cook primarily with solar ovens and live off rainwater that we harvest throughout the year. We build with earth and salvaged materials.

Living with Ampersand’s sustainable systems is an education in itself. We also teach workshops that the public is invited to. The internship includes several fun and educational field trips. Three days each week are dedicated to rest, play, and independent projects.

The 2012 Internship work projects:

Sustainable Food Systems: We will experiment with recipes for drying, fermenting, solar cooking, rocket stove cooking, focusing on local foods.

Natural Building: We will use salvaged pallets and earth building techniques to build a recycling shed, which utilizes a design for practical storage and accessibility, and integrates rain catchment.

Organic Gardening: Here at Ampersand we have a small rain catchment fed vegetable garden, a small greenhouse, and several perennial vegetable patches which integrate water harvesting earthworks. We will maintain and learn from the systems at Ampersand as well as other farms and permaculture sites.

Classes:

Passive Solar Design and Solar Cooking
Native Plant Walk
High Desert Gardening
Rain Harvesting and Greywater systems
Land Stewardship and Erosion Control

We see sustainability as an approach to life, which includes our relationships with everything- our resources, our waste, our interactions with the earth and fellow humans. We take our work seriously and get great satisfaction from it. We also integrate a patient attitude that values an inquisitive, fun and peaceful work/live environment. This community comes together to support each other in our paths towards living harmoniously with the earth in a way that values our individual passions and visions.

We are a 30 minute drive to Santa Fe, and a 40 minute walk to the eccentric village of Madrid. It has a coffee shop, tavern and many galleries. Housing for interns includes tent camping, the yurt, and a strawbale cottage. We are accepting 5 interns for 2012.

Programming 4 days per week:
Day 1: Class or hands-on instruction
Day 2: Projects
Day 3: Projects
Day 4: Field trip or independent projects

Includes weekly talking circles, scheduled time for guided independent projects for each student, morning coordination meetings, weekly planning meetings, and assigned readings for discussion.

Internship Cost is $475 per month. This covers meals, classes, field trips, and a guided personalized experiential education in sustainable living and skill building. The internship lasts two months.

Here’s what our past interns say about their time at Ampersand:

Ampersand helped me figure out what is possible to do as far as sustainable living and closed loop systems while on a budget. It turns out that you can do a lot more than I thought through innovation, imagination and a good attitude. Ampersand not only embodies positive change for the future of the environment, but also invites visitors, interns and neighbors alike to enjoy their optimistic, activist, and all around fun approach to change. I think Emma Goldman would have approved of Ampersand when she said, “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.” Thanks Tía Manda and Andy.

-Ian Callaghan, 2011 Ampersand Intern

Flying on a hunch across the USA to stay at Ampersand was the most revitalizing and empowering thing I’ve ever done. I’d still be there if they hadn’t convinced me I could change the world and deeply inspired me to do so. The community touched my spirit and turned my life around in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

-Madeleine Radke, 2010 Ampersand Intern

My time spent learning and laughing at Ampersand has impacted my life in exciting and meaningful ways and I recommend the experience to anyone who is ready to expand their lifestyle to incorporate simplicity, practical skills and the inevitable happiness that comes along with that!

-Zoe Elliston, 2011 Ampersand Intern

Interns are expected to have a strong work ethic, an ability to take initiative, and a flexibility in working and living with others.
See our website for application instructions: http://www.ampersandproject.org/?page_id=20

sailng the farm - seagypsy tribe of tomorrow!

Interested in self-sufficiency? Want to help build a community? Love the sea? Our collective, on an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, is for anyone who wants to learn and work hard. We grow food, boats and ideas, so if you have a knowledge or interest in permaculture, farming, boat building, or sailing, come and help us create a home that is sustainable both on land AND out at sea!

We are building a sailboat (the first of many), with the hope that when she sets sail (hopefully spring 2012) we will visit other eco-villages around the world, collecting knowledge and travelling in the most eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps will have the chance to join our crew, a tribe of floating sea-gypsies! We also need help on the farm, as we build up the infrastructure to form a stable base for our community. This project is relatively new; we began in 2009 so there is still a lot to be done. We live with two dogs, the farm cat and some (very) free-range chickens. We keep bees and make jam; this year we harvested our first crop of potatoes and planted next seasons raspberries. Eventually we hope to grow all our food. We want to create a place that will flourish as our boats start sailing, a place where crops, thoughts, adventures, and of course boats, can grow!

Want more info?

Sustainable Living Internship opening for April/May

The Sustainable Living Internship Program is a 2 month residential program for those who want to learn how to live a more sustainable lifestyle, on the Land and in community and experiencing deep ecology. Interns are taught all phases of organic gardening, from greenhouse to harvest and food preservation (we have extensive and beautiful gardens), plant identification, composting methods, living in place, herbal medicine, vegetarian cookery, community studies, environmental ethics, fire ecology, firewood gathering, storing and use of, hosting guests at a remote educational retreat center, landscaping and maintaining of equipment, and more.
The internship is mostly a hands-on experiential opportunity, a good measure of hard work in a strikingly beautiful setting, guided hikes into the surrounding wilderness, community gatherings, and there is also the academic aspect focused on environmental ethics and community studies. For this you receive 2 Antioch University credits for the 2 month session. We will meet in "class" formally and informally several times weekly, usually in the evenings or at another mutually agreed upon time. Interns keep their own vegetarian kitchen and share community repasts often each week.
We provide interns with a lovely and spacious 2-story cabin to share with other interns with separate sleeping spaces upstairs and living/kitchen below. We also provide food in the form of a variety of legumes and grains, baking supplies, some condiments and garden food as it comes on ready for harvest. The internship is divided into three 2-month sessions: Apr/May, June/July, Sept/Oct. You may apply for one session or more after you have spent at least one month with us and we all agree a second (or even third!) session would be in everyone's best interest.
Sustainable Living Internship details are available on our website.

www.deepwild.org

Farm and sing Internship

Cate Hill Orchard is offering our first ever Sing and Farm Internship this spring, from May 28- June 19th 2012. We—Josh Karp and Maria Schumann, the owners of Cate Hill Orchard—met each other through our love of singing, and in particular, our love of songs from the country of Georgia. But since we started farming we scarcely have time to sing anymore, and as our farm has expanded we’re finding we need help to get our spring farm work done. So, we are inviting 6-10 people to join us for three weeks of singing and farming. Many traditional folk songs are agricultural—songs to ask for rain or sun; harvest and planting songs; milking and plowing songs—and we think singing traditional songs in an agricultural setting will bring a whole new level of appreciation for and joy in both the music and the work.

We are a small diverse farm, inspired by permaculture. We grow apples and other fruits and berries in our 5 acre orchard; raise Icelandic sheep for meat, milk, and fiber; and keep honeybees. We are working towards a low input, perennial based agriculture, modeled after nature’s complexity, and where all enterprises are multi-purposed and connected.

Interns will help us with all aspects of farming and homesteading, including haying, wood stacking, sheep shearing, gardening, apple tree mulching, and beekeeping. We’ll mostly sing ancient 3 part songs from the country of Georgia, and will also sing some rounds, Shape Note hymns, and folk songs from Russia and England.

Participants will live with us and our 2 kids in our farmhouse in shared bedrooms, or may tent on our land. For more information, see our website, catehillorchard.com, or contact us: Josh Karp and Maria Schumann, info@catehillorchard.com, (802) 586-2059. No experience with farming or singing is required: just a good ear, a love of music and a willingness to get dirty and work!

Advanced Permaculture Internships: Residential May-October, Northern Vermont

Advanced Permaculture Internships. Residential positions with Prospect Rock Permaculture at Willow Crossing Farm, May-October 2012.

Prospect Rock Permaculture is excited to announce our residential internship program for permaculture designers, growers, builders, and educators looking to develop professional practice during the growing season of 2012.

We'll have 4 positions this year- each focused on a particular track for professional development:

Food Production/ Plant Animal Systems: This intern will be the point person for our food and medicinal herb production, nursery work, bees, chickens, conservation plantings, wildcrafting, greenhouse management, the plant and animal components of garden and farm design, for clients, etc.

Natural Building/ Earthworks/ Design-Build: This intern will be more focused on building systems- ie. building design, carpentry, timberframing, natural walls and insulation, living roofs, integrated greenhouses, site work and foundations, drainage, earthworks, machines, water systems, energy and waste management systems, etc.

Whole-Systems Design: This intern will be more focused on the client and presentation/ ‘deliverables’ end of the design spectrum- presentation graphics, map making, media generation, landscape analysis, client liaison, etc.

Permaculture Education: This intern will be the point person for educational offerings, the farm workshop series, curriculum development, public presentations, outreach, web and media generation, etc. Ideally, this intern has some of the most experience with the other fields.

While each of these positions will obviously be working in an integrated way on all of these tracks, the ‘focus tracks’ will help us help people develop their skills within a particular focus, and also help with management and task delineation, etc. Ideally, each applicant has already successfully completed a Permaculture Design Certification course (PDC), and has a portfolio of designs and implemented projects.
We have a two-bedroom apartment in a duplex downtown (about 2 miles from the farm), and will be offering housing there and/or camping at our farm. We will also be building some other housing options (including- hopefully- a treehouse), during the summer. The program will run from May- October, although there would be the potential for the right people to stay on longer.
Johnson is a relatively dynamic town for northern VT, home to a smaller state college, an international art school, and nearby a variety of awesome farms, wild places, tourism attractions, and resorts. OUr farm is located at the intersection of the Lamoille River and Vermont's Long Trail, so you could literally boat or hike almost anywhere you'd like right from the farm.
With housing and some meals and produce provided, it is an unpaid internship. However, we are certainly willing to share the proceeds of market sales, educational workshops, and design and building work for clients- relative to interns’ contribution to those income streams.
As for us, we just had our second child, and live between the farm seasonally and a separate apartment in the building downtown. My partner works in the healing arts as an herbalist, massage and yoga therapist, and we’re both very involved as parents. I juggle the farm and my design firm, while teaching evenings at UVM (and with other schools), and run some workshops on our farm. We also host a two-week residential PDC that will be in mid-July this summer.
Please let us know about your interest immediately, and if a particular focus track is resonating with you. I’ll be announcing the formal application process within the next few weeks, applications will be due in mid-February, and I’ll notify those selected in mid-March.
No Fees to Learn Permaculture/Self Reliance at the Art of Sustainable Living Center on Oregon Coast

The Art of Sustainable Living Center is looking for people who want to be learn Permaculture and Self Reliance.

We feel a critical imbalance of food demand and food supply is coming

This crisis will peak sometime in the next 30 years leaving large groups of people without enough access to food. As populations grow, especially in developing countries, and food production is affected by a changing weather, the increasing price of oil, dwindling supplies in fish\crops or global debt, demand for food will outstrip supply in greater and greater margins.

You have a choice either become a Grower or a Hoarder. Regardless of how much food you hoard, there is a limit. We have chosen to become a Grower and share our knowledge and experiences with others. We call our program The Art of Sustainable Living. It is how to grow food and be self-reliant whether you live in an apartment, condo, and house. You do not have to be a farmer.

Humans need to eat, humans are creative, and humans are resourceful. So what does a hungry, resourceful, creative human do? S/he grows a crop, eats what s/he needs, sells or barters the rest for another need.

At the Art of Sustainable Living Learning Center some of the projects you can learn about are:

1.	Automatic self-wicking growing beds to irrigate your food supply without daily watering
2.	Rainwater harvesting to decrease water usage
http://4h4u.info/rainwater/
3.	How to produce hot water for showers from compost
4.	Earth heated greenhouse domes to raise food year around
http://4h4u.info/healthyhuts/
5.	Automatic chicken feeder, waters, and door opener/closer to ensure a fresh egg supply[
http://4h4u.info/chickens/
6.	Worms to provide your fertilizer
http://4h4u.info/worms/
7.	Heat your home using old hot tubs
8.	Growing salads all summer from your patio or driveway
http://4h4u.info/garden/
9.	Raise strawberries using water from your fish tank
10.	Building and baking in an Earth Oven
11.	Heat your home with a rock wall

We welcome children as well as adults. There are special programs for a 4-H Club. The techniques we teach are not rocket science. We use today’s technologies in a different way to be Self-Reliant. We only teach one course per day in the afternoon. The dates which courses are taught will depend on interest.

The Fees?

If you commute – there are no fees. The closest permanent lodging with motels/hotels is located in Newport, Oregon, which is 25 miles away and at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Staying at the Learning Center If you are willing to camp (we have 80 acres and one mile of Siletz River front of camp sites) with your RV, 5th Wheel, Camping Trailer, Tent Trailer, or Tent at one of our primitive sites and work on our projects at least 2 hours per camping day there are no fees. Full RV hook up sites are available for a small fee.

We Teach Hands On Skill Building

Food Self-Reliant lends itself to being caught not taught. By this we mean that one cannot really understand soil and vegetation by merely reading a book. It is the act of listening and sensing that leads to a harmony between the grower and the growing. There are parts of food Self-Reliant where we need to use our minds, but a large part is learning to listen to the plants and to become a part of the living ecosystem. When we participate with nature in this way, there is a sense of belonging that comes to us, and meets deep inner needs.

Courses for the more serious minded person

This is for people who want to more that just something to eat. It is for people who have the time to spend at least a week or longer. Courses will be taught daily in the afternoon. During these courses a person will:

Discover Natural Living

The visual backdrop is forest, chickens, wildlife, meadow, a mile of riverfront and plenty of moss, not sidewalks, cars, and city buildings. Nights are dark and quiet and you can almost touch the stares. This natural environment helps us relax, often without consciously noticing it.

Discover Cooperation

Being part of an intentional REVOLVING community of people who want to be here part time, our Grow & Go is different from the mainstream. People want to actively work together and cooperate to make their lives richer and more fulfilling.

Discover Your Passion

What are you truly excited about? Your passions and hopes are what brought you here, and being around likeminded individuals you may discover more. This is the time to go for what you really want in life. We welcome people who are passionate about joy and happiness. You may be passionate about your work, the environment, permaculture, art, writing, music, community, healthy mind and body, and all things that help bring peace and abundance to your soul.

Discover Self-Reliance

Relying on supermarkets for food and electricity companies for power is a fragile way to live. Grow & Go is not totally self-sufficient, but we are moving more in that direction, growing more in our gardens, pumping our own water, and planning for more water catchments, passive solar power, reaping wind power, mini hydro and Aquaculture. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and help build a totally sustainable live style.

Discover Your Strengths

Living in a temporary community is about the soft skills of life, like interpersonal communication and internal growth. We will teach you to recognize your own strengths and to understand how to relate to others in a mature way. We will teach you how to understand what makes you - YOU.

The sessions are set on a weekly basis. When you register for a weekly session, you may request up to 3 subjects for the afternoon classes. The other 3 classes predetermined. Classes are only taught 6 days a week.

You do not have to spend all week, you may come anytime for just a couple of days, but the classes will already be determined by the registrants of the weekly sessions. If you are there during a class, you may attend at no cost.

You can stay longer than a week. You can stay all summer and become a long-term resident (longer than 30 days) as long as you are willing to work on our projects and meet the special considerations, but classes are only taught during the scheduled sessions.

The weekly session starts Saturday and ends the following Sunday. The first class will be Sunday at 1:05 pm.

The schedule of the weekly session for 2012 is:

June 9 - June 17
June 23 – July 1
July 7 - July 15
July 21 - July 29
Aug 4 - Aug 12
Aug 18 – Aug 26
Sept 8 – Sept 16
Sept 29 – Oct 7

Workshop Nov 12 – 18, 2012

The Workshop will provide an overview and all details of all the Art of Sustainable Living projects. There is no work required during this week, as all the presentations and lodging will be done at Depoe Bay, Oregon. There will 3 presentations per day and a one-day visit to the Sustainable Living Site on the Siletz River to see the on going projects.

For more details or information email or pm to:

Carl & Coralee Palmer
nextday@vol.com
541-765-2109

Join us in an adventure like no other

Hey everyone! I want to tell you about an incredible project I'm participating in.

It all started because of an awesome online Permaculture Certificate Course I'm taking. I'm just a few months into it (it's one year long) but it's totally rEvolutionized my way of learning and feeling, and also knowing how much useful stuff I can do in the world.
Online might sound like 'theory-only' but in fact it's all about action, so it's helping everyone be much more effective and improve their environments.
As for me, I've been transforming my roof-top garden as I build a support-group with all the other students (they're awesome people) and plan for my next projects, and recently I even got to be helping to design and manage an incredible project I'm cocreating with one of the teachers and a few other people.

The project is called GaiaSis, and it's basically a rEvolutionary form of action-learning research in Integral Permaculture, along the lines of a permaculture boot-camp with a bit of BigBrother, like a weird (and extremely productive) adventure experience, and you get to help in building an EcoVillage and become share-holders of it as well, if you want. This year it will be based in a Permaculture EcoVillage they're building in the Canary Islands (Spain), next door to me (I'm on another island).
You can take a look at our site here, at www.IntegralPermaCulture.com (you have everything there, but if you need something else, you can write us at hola@nodoespiral.net ).
If you want the basic information, you have our leaflet here, and you can join our mail list (and receive more information, a manual and the application form) here.

I can't wait to finish off my university degree this summer so I can get on to GaiaSis3 (the third session). This is such a great and exciting opportunity! So I wanted to tell you all about it, because I thought you guys would love it too. Oh, by the way, the first challenge, GaiaSis1 starts very soon (enrollment is until the end of January).
Don't miss this opportunity if you want to put into practice everything you've learned about permaculture so far, or wish you had learned, in a deep-dive kind of way. But mind that it's only for the very adventurous :)

And maybe our overlord likes the idea and can make use of it too, hehe.
Oh, and how about Paul does a podcast with these people? They've done lots of interesting stuff.

Internship at The Draw near Bayfield, WI

Our internship program is a great way to enmesh yourself into the community and participate in diverse projects. We are looking for self motivated people eager to learn. Interns eat all meals with the community sharing the cooking and cleaning responsibilities. Essentially it is their home for as long as they are here. The community expects the individual to put at least four days of work a week in on the land. Two of those days will be dictated by the community (generally a group project). The other two days will be self-directed on the condition that the community supports the enterprise. Possible projects are endless. We have had people interested in compost tea, mushroom cultivation, charcoal production for a carbon sink and terra preta, earthen plasters, building woodworking tools such as a shavehorse and a kick lathe and forest gardening. It is also perfectly acceptable for the intern to work with community members on their projects throughout their stay.

Priorities for 2011 include; plant propagation (grafting and cuttings), intensive grazing of milk cows, horses and sheep, erecting fences for the livestock, planting - lots of planting, evolution of our aquaculture system, fluffing past plantings, annual gardening, perhaps an earth oven and all sorts of other interesting things that come up. We feel like internships of this kind are the best way to become grounded in real life skills and a holistic/systems epistemology. Think of it as the new age university without the debt.

The worktrader is expected to pay for half the cost of consumables (food, toilet paper est.) with the community covering the other half. We eat all organic and mostly off the land. We as a community will attempt to facilitate the worktrader in their passions. We hope to create an environment of creativity and productivity.

Please go to thedraw.org for further information and our location. We are looking for committed individuals or couples only.

Contact: Nathaniel Larson 715-779-0155
E-Mail: nathaniel@thedraw.org

Looking for a general farm manager, Maui, HI

Bio-Logical Capital (www.biologicalcapital.com) searches the world for locations where people and nature can come together to support sustainable businesses that restore and conserve the land, preserve its history, and create vibrant communities. We are currently looking for the right candidate to fill a General Farm Manager position in Maui, HI. Please read below if you are interested or know of someone that might be.

Position Overview:
Around the world, pioneers of regenerative agriculture are redefining our relationship with land and are producing healthy, nutrient-dense food. The strategies and techniques are proven, but these efforts are often challenged by the dominance of modern, conventional agriculture, which limits access to capital, land, and markets. As a result, there are limitations to the scale at which the next generation of sustainable farmers can impact future food production, regenerate soil, and improve the overall health of the environment.

Bio-Logical Capital seeks to change that paradigm. We believe that by stacking diverse activities—cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and the production of fruits and vegetables—the resulting agriculture is more productive and beneficial. The careful combination of these activities promotes the overall health of the land and the people it feeds. We are creating a small demonstration farm on Maui, Hawaiʻi, which will have access to financial capital, land (as growth dictates), and statewide markets. The goals of the farm are to build living soil, produce nutrient-dense food, implement innovative practices, and create a beautiful, diverse, productive landscape that will become the icon of an international brand of beyond-organic products.

We are searching for a farm manager who can apply agro-ecological techniques to production in this challenging landscape (steep topography, specific climate, and current soil conditions). The farm manager must demonstrate results with long-term species diversity, health, and productivity in mind. Additionally, the farm manager will serve as a professional face and voice of the farm when showcasing and promoting the operations to visitors and to the media. This will be a highly documented process.

General farm operations will include: management of beef and dairy cattle, sheep and pigs, poultry layers, fruit and vegetable crops, and, in the long-term, creation of a variety of value-add products. The brand, and the physical farm and practices that support it will become the tool for driving social, environmental, and economic progress. It is envisioned to become a destination and is a chance to demonstrate that business, environment and community are not mutually exclusive.

The success of the farm project is critically dependent on building a strong local team and network of relationships, while demonstrating a deep commitment to improving overall farming conditions in the Hawaiʻian Islands. We expect the applicant to become a respected leader on the farm, in the community, and will work closely with the Bio-Logical Capital’s management team and partners on long-term strategies for success and growth.

Primary Responsibilities:
· Establish a small farm on Maui that is intensely-managed, and produces a diverse set of crops
· Build and improve soil fertility from the current rocky, shallow soil conditions with the application of good management techniques and local organic materials
· Select and hire a qualified team of practitioners that will work to increase the carrying capacity of the land, enhance the beauty of the site, and strengthen the core message of the brand. This team will likely include a livestock manager, dairy manager, and other necessary staff
· Plan, plant, manage, and maintain tree and vegetable crop acreage to provide diverse food crops of high-quality for on-site meal preparation and enhance the story (for outside audience) of the farm
· Plan and implement rotational management of beef and dairy cattle, sheep and pigs, and poultry layers
· Plan and phase the appropriate expansion to include dairy and creamery operations, processing of tree and vegetable crops, and other related activities that will add to the health, beauty, and productivity of the farm
· Set and manage farming project goals, critical timelines, and resource allocations
· Manage relationships with landowner and other local and statewide partners
· Serve as the spokesperson for marketing, media, and communication purposes
· Prepare reports, including financial summaries, for updating executive management and investors
· Build working relationships with relevant industry contacts, government agencies and NGOs
· Manage other tasks as necessary to support business operations

Candidate Qualifications:
· Minimum 5 years of agro-ecological farming and farm management experience with an emphasis in holistic management practices
· Demonstrated ability to integrate management operations with community and sustainability considerations and outcomes
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Proven record of success in a highly collaborative and dynamic work environment

Salary & Benefits:
This farm provides a unique opportunity for applicants to build an operation from the ground up, to demonstrate new agro-ecological techniques, to continue their education and disseminate that knowledge, and to be a part of the growth of an international brand of goods and services. Salary will be commensurate with experience, but the success of the farm and the potential international brand will bring with it additional personal and professional benefits. Benefit package will include housing, medical, and retirement.

Candidates should send a cover letter, available start date, salary requirements, and resume to mauifarmmanager@biologicalcapital.com. Qualified candidates will be contacted directly. No phone calls please.

Help: What should I put on Farming Apprenticeship Resume and Cover Letter

Hello,
As a recent graduate, I am now hoping to apprentice on an organic farm in Southeastern Pennsylvania. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to what to put on my résumé and cover letter when applying for these positions.

My degree from Penn State University is in Secondary Education Social Studies and so I plan to highlight my education experience, environmental education work, environmental activism, community organizing, skill-sharing, as well as my volunteer work with kids and special needs individuals. Despite my passion for environmental issues and activism, at this point in time I do not have much experience with growing food (only a year of organic polyculture gardening and a few hours volunteering on a local farm) so I was wondering if I should even mention this limited experience. What would a farmer look for when hiring an apprentice?

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
zym.

Looking for opportunities to support permaculture web sites and other online needs

Hi Everyone!

I live in beautiful Taos County, New Mexico, and caught the permaculture bug about a year and a half ago.

Since then, not a day has gone by that I haven't spent hours on the web researching, learning, asking questions, emailing, watching videos by or about Eric T, Bill M, Shep H, Geoff L., etc, and compiling lists of plant species, guilds, polycultures, zone plans, terraforming techniques etc etc.

With this knowledge, I've begun the journey of transforming my 6 acres into a humble little piece of sustainable paradise.

So, of course... now I want to get closer to this. To make it a more central part of my life. As close as I can get, in any way I can.

Over the past 12 years I've earned my living as a webmaster, web designer, web programmer, and web marketer doing work for companies ranging from small businesses to large fortune 500 corporations with household names.

For half of those years, I have done this work remotely via telecommuting.

Since most permaculture endeavors are small and tend to likewise have small budgets, I am hoping to work with a number of different organizations and groups engaged in this practice, so that I can continue to learn about it and augment the cause while I support my new glorious habit.

So, if you are a permaculture farm, organization, educational center, individual practitioner, etc, in need of a solid experienced web / online designer/developer to help advance your objectives, I would love to hear from you.

I can be reached at: "mail AT paulgutches DOT com"

Thanks for your time!

Good night, and happy holidays!

Careers in WWOOFing?

Hello all!

I am currently an undergrad studying geography/environmental studies at my local university. I'm planning on WWOOFing for the very first time this summer and excited to finally get some hands on experience. I love organic farming, eating locally grown produce, and going to farmers markets. Interacting and getting to know the people who dedicate their time and love to growing our food is something I am very passionate about. Now my question is, how can I make WWOOFing/farming my career? Yeah, I know that I could just travel from farm to farm, but I would like something more concrete. Would starting my own farm be my best option? Also, I would like to possibly start, work with, and/or help organize farmers markets. Any suggestion on how to go about doing that?

Thanks,
Dan

Sustainable Agriculture and Permaculture College Programs

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with any sustainable agriculture or permaculture programs in American colleges? I've run across quite a few but I have trouble determining whether or not they're decent or noteworthy programs.
I'm currently out of college with a less than awesome transcript so I'm a bit limited in what colleges I can look at (high end colleges are pretty much out of the question) and I'll definitely have to attend community college for a year or two first but I figured it couldn't hurt to start looking now.

Any colleges or related programs you might suggest? Has anyone attended school for this or something similar? What are your feelings on attending college for something like sustainable ag v.s. just learning on your own?

Thanks for any help or info. :)

RAINFOREST FARM PROJECT IN PUERTO RICO

We are creating a sustainable organic farm and need all the willing hands who can come and make this a reality. The property is located along a river and we need help with building cabins, clearing the land, setting up water system and many other projects.

We are a group of people working on creating a small sustainable community. We dont have alot of money so most of this project is funded through hard work and creativity.

You are more than welcome to come on down...space pending..We dont want too many people at one time. However, in terms of food...we cant afford yet to feed everyone so we need everyone to contribute about $10 a day per person (food in PR isnt cheap...that is why we want to grow it) so that we can purchase goods, supplies, and commodities.

Please be prepared to come as if you are camping...there is a building to sleep in however there are no luxuries...we are working on getting it as comfortable as possible. No electricity, no running water. Consider it camping. Hopefully, by the time you are coming there will be lights..

Please email us with your name, contact info and goals. We are open to people staying as long as they want as long as they are able to contribute to the food/supplies donation and are willing to work at least 4 hours a day...5 days a week. Please also, let us know what types of skills you have.

Thanks!

Seeking internship

I am an able-bodied male in my mid-20's looking for an internship at a farm.

I don't care about getting paid, I'm just looking to learn some new skills.

I have a strong athletic background and have been interested in the outdoors for a long time. I've been studying primitive survival skills in my spare time over the past few years and enjoy going hiking and camping. I have no problem with intense physical labor and getting dirty in the process.

I am located in the NE United States but I am willing to re-locate. I have nothing in my life keeping me tied to my current location, I can literally pack up the essentials in my car and leave right now.

It is my dream to someday live a self-sustaining lifestyle and to do so there are skills I will need to learn, that I'm hoping I can develop by working on a farm.

If you could contact me with some basic details we can see where it goes. thank you!

Looking for Apprenticeship/Internship

My goal is to buy my own land and support myself through either (or a combination of) gardening, raising animals, edible landscaping and wild foraging. Right now I have a lot of plant identification experience in the midwest and a fair amount of knowledge of plant use, so I'd prefer to stay in an area with similar plant communities. I also have about 10,000 dollars, which I would like to invest in land once I become more confident that I will succeed.

What I'm looking for is experience in either organic gardening, raising organic livestock and/or edible landscaping, and preferably I'd like to gain experience in greenhouse operation. I'm thinking the best way to get this is a permaculture apprenticeship or internship somewhere in the mid-west (I'm from Ohio, so anywhere with similar plant communities). I'm very interested in wild foraging and using plants not commonly grown on farms or gardens. While I have gardened before and I have a little experience in organic gardening, I don't have enough experience to confidently start out on my own. So I'm looking for somewhere that I can spend a year or two experience and knowledge.

I'm able to start any time (I just dropped out of grad school, was originally planning to get a job in invasive species management and then try to start an organic farm as a hobby on the side, but I realized that I'm not interested enough in invasive plants that I'd want to work a job dealing with them for more than a year or so, and I decided it wasn't worth the money). Looking for any available internship/apprenticeship, or for any advice on what the best way to start into permaculture is (right now I'm planning to get an internship/apprenticeship and also want to start trying to sell homemade teas and jams (from wild foraged plants) at either farmers markets or online (etsy)).
