Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Hello friends, fellow mycophiles, and fungal enthusiasts!
The Mycelial Network Collective is excited to officially announce plans for the 2nd ever Radical Mycology Convergence (RMC) and we want you to come! If you haven´t heard of the RMC before, you can read about first one (in 2011) at the link at the bottom of this post. Following up on the success of last year´s RMC we have hopes to expand the event this year to include even more events and we want you to participate!

What: As with the first RMC, we envision this unique event to be a volunteer-run gathering of mycologists, fungal enthusiasts, and Earth healers coming together to share skills and information related to the benefits of the fungal kingdom in terms of remediative properties as well as human uses. This weekend-long event will culminate in a remediation project (putting theory to practice) and will also be a unique chance to build community with like-minded mycophiles (aka mushroom lovers) from around North America. We are hoping to hold this years´s RMC in October or November somewhere along the West Coast. We are currently on the search for a location. If you have ideas or leads, please read the “Help Us Find A Location” on the website and contact us!

Why: Because these skills need to get shared! We want to make information on fungi and their helaing powers accessible and tangible for as many people as possible without making it overly-heady or technical. By creating an encouraging space we hope to “bemushroom” all who attend.

Who: The Mycelial Network Collective, organizers of the RMC, would like to cordially invite anyone interested in participating in this event to come and learn, help out, or teach!

http://radicalmycology.wordpress.com/

A holistic approach to beekeeping, tour across Canada

I am on a mission to save the bees and like to share my 30 years of experience how to keep bees not using any antibiotics or chemicals but just management.

I Printed my first book in 1995 and since updated that copy in 2010. It is called Harmonic Farming: Homesteading, with a lot more information gathered over another 15 years. I also split the original book into two, just for homesteaders and for the beekeeper, called Harmonic Farming: Bees (printed 2011).

I will be on a tour across Canada, tomorrow April 13/2012, in Calgary. I will be the keynote speaker, talking about a holistic approach to beekeeping. Starts at 7p.m. at the Calgary Unitarian Church, 1703 1st St. NW, $10.00, proceeds go to the Calgary Permaculture Guild. I also give a one day workshop on Saturday, also in Calgary starting at 9 a.m. For more information and my assignments in Red Deer and Edmonton (Sunday April 15/2012) go to this website http://www.backyardbees.ca/courses.
Permaculture course in BC with Gregoire Lamoureux

I'm hoping to take this course April 16- May 11, 2012. Just waiting to see if there are enough people registered. I'll be shocked if there aren't though, I've been looking for a course in Ontario and there's just nothing. Nada. So much of what was offered last year was taught by students of Gregoire too, lol. Might as well go straight to the master.
Anyhoo, if you feel like hanging out in the beautiful BC mountains this spring, check this out. Early registration ends March 5th (reduced tuition) so check it out quick. There are lots of places to stay in town too.

http://www3.telus.net/permaculture/Schedule2012.html

Here's the college the first 2 weeks are taught at (register here)
http://selkirk.ca/ce/courses/environmentsustainability/permaculturetrainingprogram/

"You can fix all the world's problems, in a garden. You can solve them all in a garden. You can solve all your pollution problems, and all your supply line needs in a garden. And most people today actually don't know that, and that makes most people very insecure." (Geoff Lawton)

Type of land: Recreational - what does it mean?

Hello. Let me say at first how happy I was when I first found this forum. It’s so good to know that there are so many people in the world with similar dreams and who have a place to share their thoughts and ideas.

My wife and I have been reading the posts on this forum for quite sometime, but this is our first (or maybe second) posting.

We are originally from Toronto, but have been living in Asia for the last few years where we work and save money for our dream. 4 years ago my wife and I bought a land about 50km from Sault Ste. Marie, ON in Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional township with a purpose of eventually moving there, building a house and staring a small self-sufficient farm / homestead. Recently, when going through the land papers, however, we have noticed a small line that says LAND TYPE: RECREATIONAL that made us a bit worried. We never thought about it before and simply assumed that the land is located in an agricultural zone because the properties around it are farms.

What does exactly RECREATIONAL mean?

Can we build a year round house on it?
Can we have animals on the property?

And if not, can the zoning be changed?

If there is anyone out there who can share any information on this matter we will greatly appreciate.

Thank you,

Bart Z.

the cost of permaculture design courses.

Is it just me, or are ther other people frustrated with trying to find some continuing education on permaculture, only to find that someone (many someones actually) offering a "permaculture design course" certificate, on their version of permaculture (with or without extensive hands on experience), wanting several thousands of dollars for each person to attend and participate. I am not a narcissist by nature but it feels like there are a lot of people whose primary interest in permaculture is to make money off a lot of well intetioned seekers with a fair amount of disposable income. This leaves those of us living the minimalist (AKA small carbon footprint etc) lifestyle at a loss as to how to acquire knowledge at a fair price.
Just for the record, anyone interested in coming to my little permaculture operation can stay/camp at no charge and I will freely and with great enthusiasm, share all I know. (yes that was for free) I don't however have a little piece of paper that says I have completed (and paid for) a "PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE" I have only my own experiences over the last thirty or so years.
Sorry for the rant but I would seriously love to communicate with other permies who are primarily interested in sharing and exchanging knowledge (not primarily interested in picking my pocket).

Short and Long Term Volunteer Opportunities on a Central Ontario Permaculture Farm for 2012

Position: Permaculture Farm Apprentice

Type: Full season internship ( two positions available)/Short term volunteering also accepted

Organization: Greenshire Eco Farms

Location: Lindsay, Ontario

Start Date: Early April to the end of November 2011

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a permaculture farm at its beginning stages, as we enter our third growing season, and are only at the beginning of expansion. Our farm totals 100 acres with about 30 acres of young forest and 70 acres of meadow. Our plans for this season include:

-Growing our current 1.5 acre no-tillage vegetable garden to 3-5 acres

-Building a 7’ X 14’ passive solar heated greenhouse and small cold frames

-Establishing blackberry and raspberry patches

-Transplanting black currants, gooseberries, and possibly fruit trees

-Expanding our CSA foodbox program

-Setting up a stand at our roadside

-Selling to local restaurants, at farmers markets, foodbox programs, and distributors

-Planting windbreaks

-Constructing trellis structures

-Wild food/medicine harvesting

-Pruning and rehabilitating wild apple trees

Our methods of cultivation are rooted in natural farming and permaculture methods. As an apprentice you will learn and practice the following methods of bed preparation:

-No-tillage sheet mulching

-Hugelkultur mounds

-Ramial chipped branch wood

-Hay bale instant gardens

You will learn some season extension techniques: using floating row covers, cloches, a small greenhouse, and cold frames. Interns also have the opportunity to learn about eating seasonally, including food preservation and storage for the winter.

You will also learn polyculture/companion planting methods, organic pest control, biodynamic techniques (e.g., moon-phase planting, compost tea, tree paste), and the use and care of chicken tractors.

Accommodations:

Interns will stay either in the main house, or in our 29-foot camping trailer for the season. The kitchen and pantry will be available in the main house, which is near the trailer. Much of the food supply will come straight from the land once crops start maturing. We have an outhouse-style humanure toilet near the trailer, and the shower will be made available in the main house. If desired, transportation can be provided for occasional trips to nearby towns (Omemee, Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Peterborough, etc.)

What is expected of interns:

-Commitment to the full season, including signing a contract

-40 hours per week of work on the farm

-Both self-directed and team work

-Ability to follow through on specific instructions

Qualifications:

-Preference will be given to those with previous farming/gardening experience but it is not a necessity

-Passion for sustainable farming is a must

-Physically fit with good endurance and tolerance for working outside in all weather conditions

-Dedicated hard worker who is able to work alone or as part of a team

-Able to carry out compound instructions with little to no supervision

-Willing to eat a predominantly vegan or vegetarian diet

-Someone who is alright to be around animals as we have dogs, cats, horses, and pigs

To learn more about us check out:

http://www.greenshireecofarms.com

or look us up on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/user/GreenshireEcoFarm

Looking to chat with fellow green builders

Greetings folks! I have been interested in green building and more particular cob building since first stumbling onto the technique a few years ago. I have always wanted to have a place to call my own, somewhere to build a house, somewhere to grow food to sustain myself and share with others. I came across cob building a few years ago after looking into the costs of modern building and thinking that there surely must be some way for us to make building materials ourselves. At the time I had bricks in mind which led to finding Google results on adobe brick which led to a few other things which led to cob which made me smile.

Anyhow, I own a piece of land in New Brunswick which is where I intend to build. The build start date is still at best a year and a half away as funds and other things need to be sorted before I can get to the point of actually standing on the land and beginning. I would like to get to know and chat with a few other people though perhaps in the area or not who have either done this sort of thing before or who are planning on doing it. I think it would be immensely beneficial to myself and those I communicate with to bounce ideas off of one another and just generally have a good time chatting about building and anything else that might come up.

So please hit me up folks or leave a message so I can reply via email or whatever suits you fine. I am just looking for like minds to socialize with and share idaes.

testing the water renters

I'm out here past Montmagny, near St Pamphile in the Quebec L'Islet Region. And i was thinking about renting a couple rooms i have in my 3 bedroom house, I live alone. I am permaculturing my land of 6 acres. I'm interested in having permie boarders/renters, who would like to help me with the land. food during growing season would be available, my drinking water is pristine, and there is a small fishing river nearby, hunting is also very good. Short or longer term is possible.
thanks
Kurt

Local meet up groups

I've noticed lately at coffee shops and other public places that quite a few people are getting together in meet up groups which were advertised online. There are dating groups, religious groups and others concerned with everything from skateboarding to needlepoint. Basically anyone who has an interest in the advertised event shows up at the meeting spot.

I can see this working very well for people on this forum who wish to share resources. I always have lots of useful items to give away and I'm sure there are many others in the same position. Sometimes it's just a matter of passing on information about some locally available resource or event that might be of interest to the group. The information to be found on this forum is great but quite often useful resources and interesting get-togethers are much too far away to be practical for me. For Canada we have the great White North section. It's a very big place. Even in my province there are people who are three days travel from Victoria. So we need to go much more local. It looks like the best connected group are in Missoula and I hope to take my tour bus there at some point. I suspect that many permies are much more isolated than myself and they have no idea that like minded individuals live in their own neighborhood. Local meet up groups would be a great social outlet for those folks.

I already know just about every hard-core scrounge in Victoria since they've all showed up at my demolition sales over the years and many like-minded people have met while loading wood and pulling nails. Several friendships and business relationships have evolved out of these chance meetings. More than half of my social circle are people I've met in this way." All work and no play..."

May I suggest that active members in various locations offer to host a meet up group. Events could be held at coffee shops, and at homes and farms.

These groups could be given catchy names. What about the Victoria Mud Muckers, or Victoria Scrounge Hounds.

So for Victoria BC I'm suggesting that we meet up at the Starbucks in Cook Street Village. I'm also willing to host at my farm near Nanaimo or we could meet at one of my demolition jobs and everybody can drive away with free two by fours and firewood :-). Dale 250-588-3366

House for sale

Hi all

I've got an old stone home soon to be for sale in Cambridge Ontario. It have a very large front lawn which I've been converting into food gardens. The soil is very nutrient rich and things grow well here. In all the property size is just about 1/4 of a acre. I would really like if someone who is interested in keeping the gardens and expanding them would take over because I'm sad to leave them, but the house it too big for just the two of us and we have 2 other properties that we would like to develop. Let me know if anyone is interested or even if you know someone who might be. We are located very close to the downtown Galt core and within walking distance to everything, which is lovely. Lots of festivals here, school of Architecture for the UofW and the new Drayton Theatre festival head office will soon be built 3 blocks away.

20 Metcalfe St. Cambridge ON if you want to google map it

The stone house... this map pict is from 2009, more gardens now.

Thanks
Jane

Jane

New to the forum..

Hi everyone!

Just a quick hello and short intro that I hope to expand upon when time allows.

I've always been fascinated with living off the land and primitive skills etc. since I was a kid, and luckily I have had the chance to full fill some of those notions mainly because of the family cottage. My Papa back in the day bought an old lumber mill and converted it into a resort, and when times got tough he sold the lots/buildings to friends and family. We are in the final stages of finishing a new cottage (I was quite young when we started building, so there was no voice for renewables or low-impact options) and I am hoping to finish off my room with some natural materials, and hope to use it as a leaping off point for other projects.

I have currently returned to school to earn some kind of biology/ecology degree, but used to work in Ecotourism and have a Graphic Design Diploma. Anyways, that's all I got for now!

Farming opportunity on Vancouver Island near Nanaimo

I have 7 1/2 acres of South facing land with good water just off good quality paved road within 8 miles of city. I'm just off the trans Canada Trail and it's a short walk through the forest to the river. The garden and building site are on high fairly level ground about 120 feet above the river. A seasonal stream plummets over 100 feet into the river valley and I hope to one day harness this amazing potential for electricity. Approximately 2 acres are suitable for farming intensively. My business doesn't currently allow me the time to pursue farming as I don't live near the property. You would need to be largely self sufficient since I'm not looking for a babysitting job but I would give whatever help you need in securing resources. I will be building a large post and beam house with four bed and breakfast suites. This home will be off grid but not lacking in modern conveniences. It will be solar heated with attached greenhouses and one or more thermal mass heaters which will also serve as Trombe walls and air conditioners. I may become one of your best customers for produce as my customers for the bed-and-breakfast and my camping bus business all need to eat.

This offer is available to an individual, a couple or to a small group of like-minded individuals. I don't buy into any of the lefty politics I have seen amongst some ecologically minded groups. I'm all for saving the environment and have made my living doing so for most of my life. I have no tolerance for laziness and would never consider sharing with idle dreamers. I consider the story of the little red hen to be a classic in English literature :-) and in child rearing.

I'm in the business of disposing of unwanted buildings and therefore have abundant resources available to me for free. If you are fit, capable and willing you could work at this part time and I could teach you everything needed for you to do this on your own.

I envision a relationship lasting five years or more. I am not a fan of the HIPPY SLAVERY for housing :-) model that I've seen at some organic farms. You would be running your own business growing and selling produce and if you do any work on the house or help me in my other ventures you would be paid for that in cash or trade.
Cigarette smokers, druggies, heavy drinkers and pit bull owners need not apply.

I have no intention of ever selling any portion of my property and do not wish to create a shantytown of hangers on. You would be able to live for almost nothing and buy your own place within five years if you are at all productive. The climate here is very forgiving and has given me greater returns on my gardening labor than anywhere else I have lived.

Contact me through this site or call me at 250-588-3366. Thank you: Dale

Hey! How's it goin"? My Hubby and I are interested in Permaculture but so far every time I start asking questions and for advice on things I seem to be ignored...even on this site which for the most part seems friendly enough. Do I have to have land or money or special contacts within the community to get an answer or am I just being oversensitive.(does occaisionally happen with me)I have had a hard life and am quite honest about it...which tends to put peeps off with me.Don't care for B.S. have no time for it and tend to be honest to the point of bluntness.(most peeps say they can handle this but rarely do).I'm Prickly but have a good heart, love kids, nature and could care less about material things.Society tends to rub me the wrong way and stand behind the VERY few friends I have.(have high standards in ethics and expect others to have same...which rarely happens). And oh yeah! have a form of Autism, High functioning 3 of my 4 children do to...might explain why I think differently than most.Far from stupid though and need to get some plans together for my own house once certain monies come through.Really need some practicle advice from peeps familier with Northern Ontario climate.

Hope I didn't offend too many,
Tks Cedarwitch.

Land available

There are 100-200 acres available, accessible by roads, located near sharbot lake, 45 min from kingston On. We are seeking those who would like to develop/practice permaculture on the land. This may include raising livestock, the land is divided into fenced pastures. There are hay fields, and about 40 cows that presently roam in some parts. Natural buildings may be built without permits under 10 square meters. My goal in the furture is to regroup people to develop sustainable practices in perhaps an ecovillage setting and/or educational center. I have also had interest in starting a YWAM base (youth with a mission). There is a large barn on the property with electricity, farm equipment for rent (tractor, atv, bailer etc.) There is a horse that can also be used (by the right person ofcourse). We also have chickens, and would appreciate help in that regard in exchange for eggs.
if you have animals for pasture, or would like to start a market garden, or have any other proposal please contact us! Please provide a proposal for the amount of land you would like to rent, what you can give financially in exchange, or barter, the amount of time you plan to use the property, your backround, experience, future goals, where you live. Will you be seeking accommodations here or elsewhere?
Presently, this opoutunity is ideal for someone who has a part-time job in kingston, and can provide thier own accommodations.

Business Plan

Hey guys!

I'm trying to write a business plan to start my own permaculture farm in Ontario. Has anyone written a plan like this? Does anyone have recent numbers about market trends in buying produce, especially 'organic'?

If anyone could offer any help or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Basically I'd like to get a 10-15 acre piece of land and start with a fruit tree orchard, pigs, chickens, eggs (maybe goats too) and annual veggies like mixed lettuces, tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, peppers, and maybe some corn.

Thanks!

Get Crown land in Canada

The process is a not too hard but I think that if a group were formed it would be alot easier. The land is dirt cheep and you could all get a chunk of a big range. I think BC or atlantic provinces are the best land because you can grow more different stuff. I'm game for anywhere.
If any one (Canadian) is interested in forming an assotiation to obtain crown land for permaculture lets do it. Think outside the box.
Sask Ecovillage or Land Share

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but wanted to start my own thread on the topic. I'm interested sharing rural land with people of similar values and interests. Permaculture, organics, sustainability, natural building, off grid power, cooperation, etc. "Ecovillage" might best describe what I'm after, though I like the option of residences being more spread out on the land for those who want this, so it may be more like adjacent acreages with like-minded and somewhat inter-dependent neighbours. But there can also be more of a "village" proper, too.

I prefer to pursue this with people with a spiritual approach life. A minimum is open-mindedness and tolerance for spirituality. So, this would rule out certain atheists and also religious fundamentalists. My own beliefs might best be described as "eastern" - Buddhist, etc. Yet, I appreciate all sincere approaches to "inner life".

My preference is to locate within an hour or two of Saskatoon or Prince Albert, but I'm open to other locations, even out of province. I'm looking for a quiet, natural, spacious place, preferably with some woods and some fields, and near water, like a river, though again I'm flexible on all this. We can discuss options for size, co-owning (ie: land trust), leasing, etc.

I also think that besides being good practices always, permaculture, greater self-sufficiency, etc, are greatly needed as we head into difficult times. I see many things tanking or operating very inadequately in society on the road ahead. We have built fragile, unsustainable systems and are destroying the Earth. The shift to a green economy and away from a suicidal one is happening at a snail's pace, instead of rapidly as it should. Note that this isn't even an emphasized issue in the current federal election. People are worried about short term gains and missing the bigger picture, in my opinion. Yes, immediate finances are important, but the problem is that this is where the focus is, instead of on the big picture. So, we'll suffer greatly in this country and around the world and it will take a while to rebuild. So I think we best create better places to live where we can survive and be more comfortable. For some decades, perhaps. Until, others join us in such thinking and it becomes commonplace...

I currently live on a farm near Saskatoon.

Share your ideas here, or contact me at hjb39@hotmail.com

Anyone in Saskatchewan?

Hi, folks!

My husband and I just moved to ten acres in North / Central Saskatchewan (Zone 2), and are trying to figure out what to clear, and what to plant (the acreage is badly overgrown, mostly with caraganas, which at least fix nitrogen, I suppose, but are a bloody nuisance in this climate). We've already ordered a number of hardy fruit and nut trees, but have not really figured out what else we will put in.

In addition, we have some land further south in the province (Zone 3b), which we would like to eventually use for a tree-crop based market garden, using permaculture concepts. We've been planting trees down there for a few years, now, but again would certainly not mind advice or suggestions for what all else to plant.

It is challenging to find out what even grows here, let alone figuring out what would go well with what...Is there anyone in SK already doing this?

Permaculture books for Canadian climates

I'm located in Canada — zone 4b, I believe. I've been looking for one or two permaculture/forest garden books to get me started in the right direction and to serve as reference material, but I've been hearing that a lot of the popular ones (see list at the end) are geared toward climates in the UK. Does that make them useless to me, or will there still be important things that transfer to my local climate?

I don't want to spend money on reading material only to find that most of the information doesn't apply to me. I know there's loads of information online, but sometimes just having some good guides in print gives you something the Internet can't.

Some popular books I've heard about:

[li]Creating a Forest Garden by Martin Crawford[/li]
[li]Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jacke[/li]
[li]How to Make a Forest Garden by Patrick Whitefield[/li]

No automobiles are allowed on these trails during anytime of the year!

It is a very secluded area with an abundence of wildlife including moose, deer, black bear, wolf, coyote, beaver & any & all of the wildlife typical to this area of north/central Ontario, yet only 15 or more kilometers from the nearest town, hospital & shopping. This would allow for an ample market of our produce to those seeking fresh vegetables sourced from locally grown small-scale producers. An market which is becoming wide-spread & more popular day after day.

But the "Marketing" part of this endevour is NOT the purpose for it!

It has been an long-time desire of our's, to be able to re-create the simpler lifestyle which was an everyday occurance for our fore-fathers, only a short while ago. We did not have this opportunity available, to ourselves, in the past. But good fortune has presented itself to us now, so we would like to be able to share it with others.

If you are "like-minded" & you are seeking an simpler lifestyle for yourself, we would most enjoy hearing from you!

Looking for permie farmers

Ok, how many of you actually own Mollison's 576 page tome? :-D
It was a complete and welcome revelation when I first cracked it in 1995! Then came the ecovillage movement, lot's of self-education and today...

We aim for consensus, but our Coop's bylaws let's us go with 80% if needed. Our operation is organic and permaculture based. 540 acres of beautiful land with river frontage would respond to more stewardship. We have 6 members + kids. More mutual benefit with more members.

www.kakwaecovillage.com
