May 19: Video Workshop with David Holmgren in Bellingham

David Holmgren: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability

Principles of sustainability, centered on the video teaching kit from David Holmgren, co-originator of Permaculture. The path to sustainability can be fraught with many confusions, false leads, risks and inefficiencies. A simple set of guiding principles that have wide, even universal application, can be extremely useful as a checklist when considering the inevitably complex options that lay before us. These “Beyond Sustainability” principles can be applied to our personal, economic, social and political structures. In addition to the videos, we will have class discussions and interactive exercises. A booklet summarizing the content of the class and more will be provided, and there will be a 1 hour lunch break.

Register soon to reserve your spot! Space is limited.

This class will be held at an urban permaculture home, and will include a site tour and an optional permaculture lunch, where we will attempt to employ all 12 principles.

Please RSVP miles58 at Yahoo dot com if interested in the optional lunch will be provided for a sliding scale of $7 to $15. Mostly from our garden, and prepared by Angela: Frittata (eggs), garden salad, local bread, and rhubarb crisp or cobbler.

Facilitated by David MacLeod, This is a Whatcom Folk School class and is co-sponsored by Transition Whatcom.

Registration Fee: $15 (to Whatcom Folk School) and Instructors Fee: $20 (incl. $4 for materials)

May 19, Saturday, 9:30 am – 5:30 pm in Bellingham, WA

Must register by 5/17/12

Registration for this class needs to be done through Whatcom Folk School.
Year and half old Jersey heifer for sale in Oregon City.

I thought if someone here was thinking about getting a family cow, this would be of interest. Her name is Sue and she's a pure bred Jersey that I raised from a calf. She's very docile, even though she still has her horns. She's never been given drugs or been sick and has been on pasture grass and hay her whole life, never has eaten grain, except some that I sprouted for her. We have two cow's, Sue and her mom, and can only keep one right now cause we're moving to a smaller area. Sue can be bred at this time and she will be an amazing milker. She herself nursed off her mom for over a year and it shows in her facial bone structure and all around condition. I put the price for her at $900 on cr-list but will take best offer because we want her to go to good people.

If you have any questions, please email or call me at 503 679-4612

Here's some pics.

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/grd/2980999553.html

Permaculture/Biodynamic/Natural Building Intern/Communal living opportunity Port Townsend WA

Hello! We are looking for a skill builder/renter…

What it is: An affordable alternative learning opportunity to gain skills in permaculture, biodynamics, natural building and living in Community. Some specifics you might learn include: plant propagation, building with cob, butchering chickens and lambs, animal feed management, basic construction, fermentation, organic gardening, grafting, pruning, canning and food preservation, permaculture design.

At the moment, we are not looking for another member, but a renter who is motivated to learn, work with us on projects, and help us learn how to teach and share skills. We are specifically looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic female who wants to spend the season working with us, gaining skills and engaging in our lifestyle.

We believe the best way to learn and to benefit the most from the opportunity is to live it out day to day. So we have on offer a private bedroom in the common house. That said we are looking at this as our opportunity to help you gain as much as possible so we ask that your stay here be focused on the farm, not another outside job.

We are offering a month-month lease, for up to 6 months, so that we can give another skill-builder an opportunity.

Housing: $160-275 per month + utilities + work trade. Unfortunately we dont have any way to make the internship free yet, property tax, cost of materials, utilities, and general capitalism still have us under their thumb. But we are doing our best to provide a inexpensive option. We want to make sure if you are paying you do walk away from here with more than what you came with.

Who We Are: Earlwood, a four-person fledgling radical community 5 miles outside of Port Townsend, WA working together to create a permaculture farmstead. Agriculturally based, we believe agriculture is a way of life focusing on the interdependence of humans, plants, animals, soil and the encompassing ecosystem where humans act as designers, in which no part is greater than the next, but view the farmstead as a unique biological entity. Our work here is to build an ecological kingdom upon a mountain of poop. In doing so, we close loops and create an alternative to the current production, control, regulation, inspection and distribution of food. Our guiding forces are the principles of biodynamics, permaculture, and deep ecology.
Currently the four of us live with two donkeys, 3 ewes, 5 lambs, 3 goats, one cat, one dog (Earl) and 37 chickens.

Do heed, we are just in the begging stages of building this kingdom and have only been on the land for a short time. Believing that nothing should go to waste we currently produce only some of our food, we food bank/dumpster a huge portion of the rest, we use composting toilets, build mostly out of trash, are mostly bike powered and share only one grease car. We also are a food sharing household that shares at least 5 meals a week, if not all of them.

We are all working hard to not have a hierarchical structure, and to reverse the general trend of oppression. To address this we do have consensus (which you will learn about) meetings twice a month, and a work load that is organized by the group.

When: May 1, for the growing/building season and possibly longer.

Why? To gain experience in permaculture, biodynamics and natural building and make friends along the way! To work together to build a better world.

Give us a call at 541 two three one 0340 or email zinginginger at gmail dot com

2012 NW Radical Mycology Convergence!

Radical Mycology Convergence 2012!

Hello friends, fellow mycophiles, and fungal enthusiasts!
The Mycelial Network Collective is excited to officially announce plans for the 2nd ever Radical Mycology Convergence (RMC) and we want you to come! If you haven´t heard of the RMC before, you can read about first one (in 2011) at the link at the bottom of this email. Following up on the success of last year´s RMC we have hopes to expand the event this year to include even more events and we want you to participate!

What: As with the first RMC, we envision this unique event to be a volunteer-run gathering of mycologists, fungal enthusiasts, and Earth healers coming together to share skills and information related to the benefits of the fungal kingdom in terms of remediative properties as well as human uses. This weekend-long event will culminate in a remediation project (putting theory to practice) and will also be a unique chance to build community with like-minded mycophiles (aka mushroom lovers) from around North America. We are hoping to hold this years´s RMC in October or November somewhere along the West Coast. We are currently on the search for a location. If you have ideas or leads, please read the “Help Us Find A Location” section below.

Why: Because these skills need to get shared! We want to make information on fungi and their helaing powers accessible and tangible for as many people as possible without making it overly-heady or technical. By creating an encouraging space we hope to “bemushroom” all who attend.

Who: The Mycelial Network Collective, organizers of the RMC, would like to cordially invite anyone interested in participating in this event to come and learn, help out, or teach!

http://radicalmycology.wordpress.com/

Workshop: Digital Mapping and GIS for Permaculture and Landscape Design

http://www.beaverstatepermaculture.com/events/digital-mapping-and-gis-for-permaculture-and-landscape-design

Oregon State University Department of Horticulture presents:
Digital Mapping and GIS for Permaculture and Landscape Design
May, 19, 2012. Cordley Hall 4056, OSU Corvallis
Instructor: Andrea Laliberte www.earthmetrics.com
Cost: $75
Registration: http://hort.oregonstate.edu/May_19,_2012,_Digital_Mapping_and_GIS_for_Permaculture_and_Landscape_Design

This workshop will introduce participants to digital mapping tools and techniques (Geographic Information Systems or GIS), and how small landowners and permaculture designers can use these tools with freely available data for site planning. A map is an integral part of Permaculture design, and using a digital format allows for multiple data overlay and for obtaining real-world measurements.

We will investigate what data layers are available, useful and appropriate, and where aerial photos, topographic data, soil maps, and other spatial data layers can be found online, downloaded, and integrated to develop site plans for design and land management.

In the morning, we will demonstrate data access, tools, and techniques, and we will look at the pros and cons of using free online tools such as Google Earth versus GIS software. In the afternoon, participants can work on maps of their own sites in the OSU computer lab, guided by the instructor.

This workshop will focus mostly on freely available software and data, but will also present how more advanced tools and techniques can be used to obtain slope, aspect, and solar radiation maps as well as outputs with higher detail and greater accuracy.

Andrea Laliberte bio
Dr. Andrea Laliberte is a remote sensing scientist with over 14 years of experience in academic and government research in geospatial analysis of aerial and satellite imagery for natural resource applications. Andrea has a MS in rangeland resources and a PhD in forest resources from Oregon State University.
For the past 8 years, Andrea was a remote sensing scientist with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service’s Jornada Experimental Range in Las Cruces, NM, and an adjunct professor in Geography at New Mexico State University. She focused on developing image processing techniques for assessing arid land degradation, and developed novel applications for using unmanned aircraft for remote sensing applications.
In 2011, Andrea and her husband moved back to their 5-acre property in Brownsville, Oregon, where they plan to use permaculture principles to develop a small farm. Andrea recently founded earthmetrics, a consulting business that offers geospatial analysis and services for natural resources, and she plans to integrate her experience in the geospatial field with her strong personal interest in permaculture, organic gardening, and small farms.

Moving to Portland in May, looking for a rental or shared farm situation

Hi there! I sold my house/farmette and I'm moving to Portland from WV in mid-May. I would love to find a small — 2 acres or less — farmable space. I'm very open to sharing on a larger property or intentional community. If it doesn't have a house, okay as long as I can put a trailer or a yurt on it. Ideally, I'd like to be as close-in to the city as possible for work, but I'm flexible on that. I don't want to share a house unless cats are okay (3 or 4). Just prefer my own space (I'm in my 50's).

Another option — a little distressed property in the city with a big yard? I haven't found anything on craigslist; does anyone know of anything like this available?

Disclosure: I don't have a lot of money (not enough to buy a place, at any rate), and my credit report is shot from the last 2 years of living under- and unemployed in a very depressed rural economy. I lost most of my life savings with this last house and need a new start.

Thanks for any leads or advice!

Ellen

The Dome School stove is great for understanding the principles of gassification and biochar creation while replacing traditional expensive proprietary backpacking equipment. Either stove is good to have around and know how to use in personal / community emergency preparedness as well as building sustainable solutions for our soil and environment.

This is a fund raiser event to convert our Worker Owned Cooperative into The Foundry MakerSpace / Seattle MakerSpace in Ballard Seattle. A portion of the proceeds will go toward Seachar.org's continuing efforts as well as helping The Foundry's Worker Owned Cooperative open it's facilities to provide a Community Industrial MakerSpace in Ballard. Our primary focus being sustainability projects, skill sharing, Metal, and Fire. Current activities have included stove making, metal casting (aluminum and bronze) welding, black smiting, metal working, woodworking. and 3d printing. Learn how to do a pre operational check on equipment such as a mini-hoe and skid-steer, and excavate for foundations and bio-swales. Heavy equipment allows you to get more work done with less people in a shorter period of time. Make it work for you.

June 26 - Water management, grading, and re-vegetating earthworks
Learn the principles water harvesting. We will focus on swale building, fine grading, and overflow construction using a transit, “bunyip” water level and A-frame water level. Then mulching and vegetating the earthwork with seedballs and other methods. Gain the confidence to create a swale system from start to finish.

June 27 - Stone masonry using recycled materials, pathways, stairways, patio
Start by touring local projects that highlight attractive use of recycled concrete, brick and other materials. Learn the principles of dry-stack and mortared rock features. Excavate and construct the footings and walls for a seating and outdoor classroom area.

June 28 - Deck building using a laser plane level
Building upon the stone foundation from the previous day, the deck-building module will involve using a variety of leveling devices ranging from a water level to laser plane. We will look at using alternatives to wood decking and discuss the pros and cons. The use of power tools and hardware will also be covered.

Week 2 – Home Water Systems: Plumbing for sustainability: 1 Credit

July 9 –Tour local rainwater harvesting systems, disconnect the downspouts with Al Shay
Tour installations of water harvesting cisterns and systems throughout Corvallis. Divert the roof rainwater for gravity flow through a series of containment constructs and bio-filters, including a fully planted rain garden at a home demonstration site to be installed throughout the week. We’ll be using a transit and water level to accurately set the pipes.

July 10 – Rainwater harvesting cistern theory and installation
Learn best practices for cistern installation, including roof, plumbing, and cistern materials, filters and first flush diverters, and standards for potable rainwater systems. We will install a rainwater harvesting cistern as part of this week’s landscape water remodel.

July 11 – Greywater treatment system theory and installation with Dave Eckert
Learn about best practices for greywater treatment and what is currently legal in Oregon, California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Install a demonstration constructed wetlands system for a laundry machine at our residential demonstration site.

July 12 - Raingarden and small pond theory and installation
Complete our home landscape demonstration with the installation of a small pond and fully planted rain garden. The downspouts will now feed a diverse and productive ecosystem in the home water garden. We will discuss design and then install the landscape features.

Week 3 - Practical Permaculture Production: 1 Credit

July 16 – Spawning wild mushrooms, Oyster mushroom box, compost tea brewing with Jordan Weiss and Mathew Slaughter
‘Mushroom’ Jordan Weiss teaches low-tech methods for getting wild mushrooms to grow at home. We will collect the stem butts of local species and get naturalized cultures that can be used to inoculate a wide-range of substrates. We will use locally-produced spawn in a few myco-permaculture applications. Learn how to grow oyster mushrooms using practically free resources, i.e. pallets, silage, cardboard, burlap and other appropriate substrates. Learn a method for cold-pasteurizing a variety of silages for the purpose of growing oyster mushrooms, and explore innovative ways to compost wind-thrown trees. Learn the basics of compost tea brewing from Soil Food Web’s director Mathew Slaughter.

July 17 – Harvesting the permaculture landscape: food, medicine, mulch and materials with Heiko Koester
Join Eugene Permaculture botanist Heiko Koester as we harvest the diverse yields in a Permaculture landscape. Learn how to harvest herbs and make medicinal tinctures from them, harvest craft and building materials appropriately, identify and harvest edible “weeds”, and manage the landscape with “chop and drop” mulching.

July 18 - Rotational grazing management with Jason Bradford
Learn from Dr. Bradford how he builds soil and produces abundant organic food by intensive rotational grazing on diverse pastures for the nearly 1000 acres he manages outside of Corvallis.
Moving to Portland -- Looking for an Urban Homestead willing to rent space for 2 people

Hello! If you are looking to rent to 2 permies moving to Portland next month, please read this entire post! I have a unique and interesting proposal that has to do with my Airstream trailer, but I'm open to any rental opportunity there might be within the permies community in Portland. Please keep reading through the trailer stuff, even if you can't accommodate one!

My girlfriend and I are relocating to Portland next month so she can attend nursing school. We are hoping to find some urban homesteaders in the Portland area who might have just enough space to accommodate a 28' Airstream trailer. It wouldn't need to be a traditional trailer pad, as we would only need somewhere to plug in an extension cord from time to time, and something to hook up a garden hose to get some water for showering, etc. We're sporting a composting toilet as designed in the "Humanure Handbook", so blackwater isn't an issue the way it is for normal trailers. If you have or are willing to have a humanure pile, we'd happily help maintain it and contribute to your fertility. If you don't have or don't want to have a humanure pile, we know other permies in Portland who'd let us haul it to their place, which I'd happily do. (Unfortunately, those friends of ours don't have room for our Airstream.) We only use toxin-free stuff (like Dr. Bronners or 7th Generation) when washing our dishes and taking showers, so our greywater would be very safe for your trees and whatever else you might be interested in diverting greywater to. We're also willing to use something else if those soaps don't meet your homestead standards.

We're both permaculture minded folks. I'm very willing to help around the homestead in the garden or with other homesteading projects. My girlfriend would probably love to as well, but she will be quite busy as her program is an accelerated one and so she won't have much time for other things. We're quiet and peaceful, and would respect you, your space, your privacy, and your land. We're hoping to find someone who might be willing to rent us the space for between $250 and $350 a month. That range is an ideal, but we're willing to chat if you have something else in mind. I have a stable job that I'm relocating from Olympia to Portland for, and we're both responsible people who will pay our rent, our share of utilities, of internet, etc., in a timely and respectful manner. Finally, we're hoping to find a place that is within an hour's commute by bike or public transit to the OHSU campus, since that is where she's going to school, and I'll be working close by there as well (in the Pearl district). That's why I specified "urban homesteader," but if you're less urban but about an hour's commute from that area, we're all ears.

If this seems like an arrangement you might be willing and able to make, please reply to this or send me a private message!

Lastly, if you happen to have a rental opportunity (such as a guest house, an empty basement, an empty trailer but not room for another trailer, etc), please get in touch with me anyway. I have friends in Olympia that would love to borrow my Airstream while my girlfriend is in school, so I'd be willing to rent your space, if it meets that hour commute time restriction. The $250-350 ideal range obviously wouldn't apply to many of those situations, but I'm open most anything. We're really just hoping to find some cool permaculture minded people to share community with while we're down in Portland, and we're open to all ideas.

Thanks again!!

What permiculture edibles work in Portland?

I am permifying my 1/2 acre in Portland. If anyone has anything that works especially good for you here, please let me know, even just your most favorite one or two items. My 'works good' means that I will not have to work much once the plant is established, and it regularly produces acceptably tasty edibles; but your 'works good' can be defined as you please. As time is limited, I need a productive backbone in the yard and fewer items that may be more time consuming to care for, harvest, and prepare.

Hard to tell by reading if some things will produce in Portland. If anyone knows about any in this first list, and if any additional tidbits on taste or whatever, let me know about these especially:
-Pineapple-guava
-Pomegranite
-Any citrus edible from the tree - kumquat? owari satsuma mandarin?
-Loquat
-Paw Paw (hand pollinate?)
-Chilean guava
-Chilean wintergreen
-gaulnettya
-lingonberry
-japanese yam
-cinnamon vine
-maypop
-Tasmania vine
-avocado

Also preparing to plant the following, which through reading these seem will grow and produce well:
-Stella dwarf cherry tree
-Asian persimmon
-hazel nuts or almonds
-jujube
-strawberry tree (though I hear they taste so-so, but I like the looks of the evergreen tree, so I figure I can mix with other berries in recipes)
-bamboo, for edible shoots (any recommendations?)
-Sunchokes
-hardy kiwi
-table grapes
-strawberries
-numerous perennial veggies (sorrel, artichoke, etc..have the seeds, ready to plant!)
-numerous perennial (and annual) flowers and leaves for tea
-green tea shrub
-yacon
-various berries

Already have:
-apples (though have to get the ecosystem better to prevent worms, bugs, etc)
-figs
-asparagus
-neighbors plums hanging over the fence
-raised beds for annual veggies

Any tidbits of info or experience always appreciated! I'm pretty new at all this, but devoted!
Brian

Good ground cover to plant in traffic circle?

I'm looking for a low maintenance, fast growing/spreading, plant to go in our block's traffic circle. The catch is that it needs to be able to withstand some occasional driving over, and on average not grow more than 15" tall. The height limit is city ordinance (Seattle), the driving is because the occasional lost delivery truck is forced to drive over the circle as it attempts to navigate our streets. Once in a while a kind neighbor will water the circle, but ideally it should be able to thrive without watering.

Suggestions?

Northwest Native Plant and Tree Sale -----------Saturday, March 10th 9:00AM to 3:00PM

Northwest Native Plant and Tree Sale

Sponsored by: Washington County Small Woodlands Association
at Bales Thriftway Store, 17675 SW Farmington Rd., Aloha

Saturday, March 10th 9:00AM to 3:00PM
2012 Plant List

The Washington County Small Woodlands Association has scheduled its eleventh annual Native Plant and Tree Sale for Saturday, March 10th from 9AM to 3PM. The location will be Bales Thriftway Store at 17675 SW Farmington Rd., Aloha. Native plants are adapted to local water, soil and climate conditions and are therefore more disease resistant and less likely to require pesticides or fertilizers. Birds, bees and other native animals and insects thrive where native plants are available.

All plants are certified, quality nursery stock. With almost 2,000 plants, this may be the largest one-day sale of its kind in Oregon. Many species are becoming rare in our Oregon forests and non-existent in developed areas. Check out this year’s new varieties. If you need large quantities of any plant (20 or more) use the contact information below.

Master Woodland Managers, “Naturescaping” experts and Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions about selection, suitability, planting and care. Our famous handout describing characteristics and growing habits of each plant will be available along with landscaping ideas.

All profits from the sale fund scholarships and community education.

For further information, contact Bonnie Shumaker (503)324-7825, bshumaker@coho.net or Ardis Schroeder (503)628-2344

http://wcswa.org/

anyone ever rip with a cross cut saw?

I was thinking of asking if anyone knew of a one man 'pit-style' rip saw (ie. with real rip teeth) but at this point, I've kind of figured out that they don't exist.

Now I realize that there are several types of teeth patterns but basically I'm looking to not use a chainsaw (unless, of course, that's all there is to it). Has anyone had any success with one type of tooth pattern over another?

Anyone have one I can try out around Eugene Oregon?

Honestly, I'm kinda stunned that I can't find (online) any solution to the problem of making boards out of a log with hand power. It doesn't seem too crazy a question. Am I looking in the wrong places? Hmm...

Thanks!

Food procurement committee & kitchen

Food Procurement Committee [STARTED NEW TOPIC]
Michael Pilarski is part of this committee

Three sources of food
1) Donated by participants. Part of this is home-grown, part of it is purchased and part are donations solicited such as day old bread or even some dumpster diving. Aim for 75%
2) Purchased from local farmers. It will not be difficult to link into the local organic farming crowd. Vegetables is what we tend to get lots of participant donations from. Eggs, dairy and meat are usually needed to augment donations. We will be checking into purchasing a whole cow locally. Aim for 15%
3) Purchased through a regular natural food supply chain. The Port Townsend Co-op is the most likely choice. 10% or whatever is needed after we’ve done what we could with the above two sources. Salad oil and cooking oil, some spices, cheese, butter, almond milk, rice milk, salt, and so forth,

For every convergence we have publicized that people should bring food to donate to the common kitchen. If any crowd should be able to feed itself, it is the permaculture crowd. In the two years at Sahale and at South Seattle Community College the food was about 75% donated and a majority of that grown by themselves. I have heard that this proportion went down at the St Helens, Oregon convergence last year. We should make a plea to all the participants to see if we can get back up to 75% food from the participants. Can we feed ourselves? Are we willing to adapt our diets for the weekend to forego citrus and instead eat regional fruits with high vitamin C content.

The food procurement committee of course will have to work closely with the cook(s). we will need a local person from the Port Townsend area who is deeply familiar with the local farm/food scene.

Kitchen outfitting
Inventory what is available on site. The cooks then brainstorm the list of everything else they need. Someone(s) has to line up all that stuff. Cookware, serving ware, etc, etc.
This includes planning for all dish washing, cleaning supplies, towels, etc
Best scenario is that the cook(s) have a lot of the needed kitchen stuff or knows where to borrow it.
Michael Pilarski has a lot of the things for outfitting large event kitchens. I am willing to bring a lot of kitchen stuff if it cannot be located closer. So I will be part of this committee

Receiving, inventory and storage of food on site. Last year there was a whole crew and a separate building for this. Receiving inventorying and storage of huge volumes of food is a lot of work. It needs to be gotten from the storage to the cook’s hands as needed. What is storage capacity like at the two kitchens? How big is the cold storage(s)? Any other rooms, buildings available.

Menu planning
So how is the cook going to prepare a menu from donated food? Every registration form has a section that asks people to write down what food they will be bringing to donate. This information is keep collated and delivered to the cooks periodically so they can see what things are being promised. This gives us some idea of what is incoming. Plus we can draw on past year’s experiences. I have some of that institutional memory and know all the cooks from past years, who we can call for advice. The menu planning phase will inform what we need to order through stores.

Cooking.
The head cook has to cook as well as direct the kitchen team. There will have to be separate cooks for the two kitchens. It has been proposed that one be vegetarian and one be carnivore. The head cooks have to be cooking whizzes plus have impeccable people skills. We should start looking. It would be nice to have a sterling cast of applicants to choose from.

Scholarships Committee

Scholarships Committee [STARTED NEW TOPIC]

Since I proposed that some of this year’s sponsorship money be allocated to scholarships a few people would have to oversee this facet. Decide where to do extend offers of scholarships.

For instance I would like to see scholarships for members of the Indian tribes of the area, the Jamestown S'Klallam Indian Tribe and the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe. But this is easier said than done. I personally have a few native contacts and know people who do have contacts in the Swinomish, Lummi, Tulalip and other tribes. Here is the url of a map in case you want to brush up on current placement of tribal reservations in the state: http://www.goia.wa.gov/Tribal-Information/Map.htm

Recent migrants from Africa, Asia and Central and South America, Particularly people who were farmers in their home country. We can learn from each other.

Street people, I always like to offer a scholarship to a staff and several of the street people that work with Seattle Youth Garden Works.

We want to give scholarships to people who are keen to gather knowledge to take back to their communities. In fact, why not make it one condition of the scholarship to schedule and give a public talk in their community.

I find sometimes that the people who are the most open and motivated already have their hands full and sometimes are working a lot to support a family. Their families are already struggling. In some cases I would like to be able to pay some people money they can give to their families so they can take the time off for the conference. I would not publicize this, but I hold it open as a possibility in some circumstances where we are really convinced this is a worthwhile person to invest in.

A scholarship application form would need to be made up. The people on the committee can brainstorm a list of avenues to explore, organizations to approach, etc. and put it on the scholarship string in the forum. Anyone else on the forum can stop by to see what’s up and post their nominations to add to the list.

I see the scholarship fund as for special cases. Where we are extending a hand and trying to bring someone in who would otherwise not even consider it. Many of the people who write asking for a scholarship are perfectly capable of doing a work trade.

2012 Convergence Committees, come join us!

Hi everyone!

So the work is starting up for next year's NW Permaculture Convergence, and we're looking for people who'd like to lend a hand to make the magic happen.

And since I know y'all are probably Paul fans and may have heard lackluster reports from last year via his podcasts: fear not! Our surveys have come in from overall happy participants, but we did duly note that this year we'll have warmer/better spaces for classrooms, option of cabins or tenting, more beginning and advanced tracks, improved kitchen/meals and less singing and dancing. And Paul will be invited. :)

So, if you're thinking about helping out:
We've been meeting in Seattle every few weeks, but no need to make the meetings if you can just give time remotely.
We have a venue and date reserved, and an announcement will be made about that as we finalize things with the venue.

Our general committees will be:
Business Structure (making or transferring non-profit to our current team)
Registration
Presenters Scheduling
Food & Kitchens
Outreach/Publicity
Hands-On/ Skill-share area
Evening Events
Children's programming
Website/ Tech Geeks
Site coordination
Fundraising
Coordination of Worktraders/ Volunteer Shifts

Right now our biggest gaps are in food/kitchen, registrar, kids' programming, etc. But we can use help anywhere!
Any takers?

Issaquah, WA: How to Grow All Your Own Produce in 2.5 Years

How to Grow All Your Own Produce in 2.5 Years: A (r)Evolution Disguised As Organic Gardening

Presentation by Marisha Auerbach

Friday, March 16, 6 pm – 8 pm
King County Library Service Center
960 Newport Way NW, Issaquah, WA

Free

In the Maritime Northwest, it is possible to grow all our own produce year-round with limited time to establish a system and limited effort. As petroleum becomes more expensive, this sort of system can provide an example to support our evolution to a more sustainable society. Marisha Auerbach specializes in converting properties from grass to to a perennial forage system. A perennial forage system functions much like a natural ecological system, and yields year round produce with minimal work. These systems are developed to meet the needs of the inhabitants on site. Marisha provides most of her diet and income from her garden and has surplus produce and crafts to give away and trade for other supplies.

This presentation is an invitation for you to visit Marisha's gardens through slides and lecture. She will be discussing how you can work towards self-reliance in produce if you have property to work with as well as guerrilla tactics to grow more food and flowers in the greater community. This lecture offers an opportunity to create cultural change through gardening.

This slideshow will be an updated version, including Marisha's experience and reflections on moving to Portland this year in mid-June and her tiny yard. We hope you can join us...

This presentation is sponsored by Sustainable Issaquah and the City of Issaquah Resource Conservation Office

Marisha is also teaching an 8-hour permaculture class with hands-on in Issaquah on the day following this event.
Sausage Class by Farmstead Meatsmith

Many of you have longed for (and requested!) this very class. A whole day dedicated to that decadent part of the pig harvest that combines the complexities of flavor, fat and thrift. The place where all your scraps go and then constitute the most eloquent amalgamation achieved by humanity.

Come learn to make 3 or 4 (depending on the student turnout) variations of this one prize product: fresh sausage.
Community Food Incubator For Olympia

So, if you live in the Olympia area, you might have heard about Olympia Local Foods (if not, they serve as a kind of go between between farmers and customers; farmers tell them how much produce they have, and how much they want to sell it for, and then OLF relays that information to the customers and facilitates the transaction for both parties)-

Now, they're working to create a "Community Food Incubator"- basically, a certified facility, where small time farmers like my self can make things like pickles, jams, and dried foods and then sell them legally. I myself would really like to see them succeed, because I have a number of items that I'd like to make, but currently can't. They are currently asking for donations, so if you're in the area and would like to see this kind of food security and independence (i.e., food from local people, instead of food teleported from who knows where grown in who knows what kind of situations) develop more, please consider supporting them.

Here's their website: http://www.olympialocalfoods.com/

And here's their Kickstarter page: http://kck.st/s7rEuW

Looking for a Place to Rent in Olympia, WA

I am looking for a good place to rent (the whole house, or a bedroom) in Olympia, WA. I'm having trouble finding a good place to rent because I have a border collie who is bigger than most places size restrictions. I figured permies might be the kind of people who would rent to someone with a dog, and judge that dog based on its behavior, and not on its size.

If you have a place to rent in the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater area, please contact me. I'm an avid permaculture enthusiast who would love to help/implement projects on the property. I'm 28 years old, have a stable job in retail management, and I am always on time with rent and bills. My girlfriend has a stable healthcare job, and is equally responsible. My dog is a 60 pound border collie who is very well behaved, well trained, and the only thing he ever breaks is my concentration when he wants to be scratched behind the ears a little. He wouldn't make much of a guardian dog as he is lazy and calm, but the plus side of that is that he's too busy laying around sniffing his paws to do any damage to anything.

If anyone has anything available, I'd be happy to meet you and bring my dog along for an interview. My current landlord will be happy to provide a reference for me and my dog, and has said she'll be sad to see me go, but understands that I want to live closer to public transportation.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and consider me if you're in the landlord business!!

First Peoples' Names for Mountain in the Olympics?

I'm trying to find as many of the original names as I can for the mountains in the Olympic Mountains in Washington state. I know it's a broad request, but if anyone knows any of the names of any of the mountains in the Olympics given to those mountains by the First Peoples in the area, particularly by the Makah, Elwha Klallam, S'Klallam, Suquamish, Skokomish, Quinault, Hoh, and Quileute tribes, please share them in this thread!

This might seem an odd request, but I'm somewhat new to the PNW and I'm feverishly trying to learn about the pre-colonial history of the area. One of my favorite parts of learning these things is learning the original names for a place. In my humble opinion, they are usually quite a lot more beautiful than the names we call them by now (Denali for Mt. McKinley, Chomolungma for Mt. Everest, Tahoma for Mt. Rainier, Klickitat for Mt. Adams, etc). I've found the names used by the First Peoples who lived nearest a mountain for many mountains, but I have been unlucky finding names for mountains in the Olympics. Any personal knowledge and/or references to places I could find such information would be greatly appreciated!!
