What portable music player would you recommend?

However, I want to get myself a new portable music player and I was wondering what you would recommend. I am open to all suggestions however, I want a portable music player that is able to play FLAC (or any other lossless format) music files and that has the capacity to hold A LOT of music.
Well, thank you for your time and I'll be looking forward to your responses!

mystery song in mystery video

Okay,
A month or 2 ago I heard a nice little song about post peak oil at the end of a youtube video. It was in a sort of alt-folk style, and was about what we'll have to do when this happens or that happens. I can't remember the video or the song! Does this ring a bell with anyone? I would love to find it again.
Thanks for any brainstorms,
Anna

Good Design, Bad Design, Great Design

I considered posting this under the main permaculture forum.

This poem came from a game designer named Raph Koster. See his original post and comments here: http://www.raphkoster.com/2011/12/16/good-design-bad-design-great-design/#more-3929.

I think these design elements can also apply to permaculture and are often missed as the focus becomes more on stacking functions, sectors, capturing and slowing energy and other permaculture principles. While zones play a part in encompassing utilization by people, planning for that can also be largely practical and, well, let's face it: bland.

I've seen a lot of permaculture spaces with good design, but not very many that have the great kind of design that is inviting, instructive, exciting and engaging.

Good Design, Bad Design, Great Design
(By Raph Koster - www.raphkoster.com)

Good design is familiar.
Bad design is boring.
Great design is exciting.

Good design embraces human nature.
Bad design exploits human nature.
Great design is humane and humanistic.

Good design guides.
Bad design controls.
Great design invites.

Good design drives habit.
Bad design drives frustration.
Great design drives passion.

Good design teaches.
Bad design lectures.
Great design has you teach yourself.

Good design is invisible.
Bad design calls attention to itself.
Great design calls attention to what you can do.

Good design celebrates accomplishments.
Bad design loudly celebrates minor accomplishments.
Great design enables accomplishments.

Good design does what the user wanted.
Bad design does what the designer wanted.
Great design does what the user didn't know they needed.

Good design is at the user's skill level.
Bad design never asked the user.
Great design makes everyone think they can use it.

Good design is intentional.
Bad design is planned (exhaustively, on paper).
Great design reveals itself while working in the materials.

Good design gets people to pay for utility.
Bad design gets people to pay as quickly as possible.
Great design makes money as an incidental consequence.

Good design makes companies.
Bad design can make plenty of money.
Great design builds legacies, cultures, and communities.

Good design converses.
Bad design tells.
Great design connects people.

Good design executes on the possible.
Bad design ships on time.
Great design reaches for the implausible.

Good design has only the parts it needs.
Bad design is cluttered.
Great design has fewer parts than seem possible.

Good design doesn't fail.
Bad design fails a lot.
Great design fails even more.

I have done good design.
I have done plenty of bad design.
I always want to do great design.

I'd love to hear thoughts, or see pics or videos of what folks think is good, bad or great permaculture design.

A permie poem

Let me know if this drivel is totally meaningless or if it has at least a little merit.

The Weeds

We are the weeds.
We are the future
We are Feral Farmers,
Wild gardeners and
When we “blitz” an area
We leave behind swales, hugels,
Seed balls and newly planted trees.
Yes, we see problems, so many problems
But in the problems, we see the answers
For there is no waste, only product waiting to be used!
We care for the Earth, the People and
We Share the excess of our harvest.
For we are the weeds
We are the future
Come! Join us in the shade of our fig tree,
And share the fruit of our vines!

#
So. Whadaya think? Okay or am I, like, WAY out of line?

When it comes to American cartoon, it should be classified into two styles: first of all, mainstream cartoon. The most typical representatives are Walt Disney Television Animation and DreamWorks Animation. Disney is a master at processing family fairy tales while DreamWorks is an expert of creating happy ending; their cartoons are good for the old and the young, with no international barriers. Second is inconsistent style, which opens their area with its strong individualism. It refuses to make neutral thoroughly. There's no no sure formula. It is really common to pull the present's leg.
JOSEPH FERRANTE, the piano tuner of George Harrison

Joseph Ferrante had his first guitar as a Christmas present when he was nine years old. Since then he's been learning all kind of music styles so as to apply them to his guitar playing. He is mainly a Rock musician.
Pod's Blues, After Obsession, The Beasts, The Primitives, Ferrante's Experience, Silver Shadows, The B3, Yesterday, Bowen West, Rock Ltd., etc., etc., are some of the bands he's played with.

He worked as a piano tuner and technician for Chappell, Yamaha and other firms, perfecting the art of making and repairing pianos.
Amongst his usual customers you could find The Royal Albert Hall, The Westminster Cathedral, The Royal Scots Guard Band, The BBC, The London Symphony Orchestra, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, George Harrison, etc., etc. He also worked for the National Artists Association, attending pianos on the national tours of artists such as Maurice Hasson, Judith Jaimes, etc, etc.

He stopped giving live performances with bands and is now exclusively dedicating himself to studio work. Ferrante uses real instruments, avoiding the use of computers, sequencers, etc., etc.

Three main reasons guided his life: God, Music and Romeo and Juliet. His major musical influences are: God, Yes, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, E.L.P., Jimi Hendrix, Beethoven and Bach.

His "Shangri-la" CD is a mixture of styles and tendencies including Rock, Ballads, Classic Choirs, Latin Music, Impromptus, Reggae Fusion, Tropical Bachata, Fox Trot, Swing, etc., etc.

The land of forever..."Shangri-La"...the magical dreamplace far away beyond the mountains...the Kingdom of eternal youth, gave the title for this work.

To preview all the songs in "Shangri-La", go to: http://ferrrantemusic5.byethost13.com

To find a wealth of information about Joseph Ferrante including main website, pages, comments, articles, photos, etc., go to: http://ferrrantemusic5.byethost13.com/menu.htm

The recomposition of Hey Jude by JOSEPH FERRANTE (extreme guitar work)

This treatment of the song has been completely changed rhythmically and harmonically to obtain a very different song which hardly keeps any resemblance to the original one.
Only the lyrics and the singing melody remain untouched. The rest is another song altogether. The piece has been practically recomposed. In other words, another song was composed where the singing melody of the original song would perfectly fit.
An ethereal choir lays the carpet upon which the rest of the arrangements would rest.
A mixture of classical scales, indian music, greek music, latin bachata, mambo and flamenco brings the song into reality.

On top of an obstinate percussive tempo softened by a romantic bachata rhythm, we hear the sometimes sweet and sometimes savage expressions of the guitar telling us a story...
The third part of this recomposition gives the guitar the chance to break free from the melodic structure.
After a fierce battle in the oceanic winds against creatures of all sorts, we hear the guitar rest on an ingenuous final chord which, in the sunset is the herald of a peaceful starry night...
This Hey Jude was born to reach music lovers of all backgrounds and ages.
This Hey Jude is a child of the heart and is meant to reach the hearts...comes from the depths of the soul and from there calls out to the depths of any other soul....

The owners of the copyright for the original Hey Jude (Sony Music Publishers) were so delighted by this recomposition that granted Joseph Ferrante a publishing agreement for it, thus allowing him to restructure the song. It is important to notice that on very few occasions copyright owners have granted a permission to alter a song protected by them. To view this publishing agreement go to: http://ferrantemusic3.byethost13.com/12.htm

Concerning this Hey Jude of Joseph Ferrante, Richard Dunn of BBC World service commented: ¨I must say I found it a very original and quite virtuoso arrangement¨. Sam Winwood of Sony Entertainment (UK) Limited said: ¨I was really impressed with the quality of the performance and your new arrangement¨. Andy Turner of London Capital Radio went on to say: ¨I found it a very interesting arrangement¨.

For a 40 seconds preview of the song go to: http://ferrantemusic3.byethost13.com

You will only listen to the first part of the song. The most thrilling part of the song, the last part, is not heard on this preview.

AJ Lee

I hope this is the right place for this sort of thing. I found out about this gal this morning while reading mother jones. For about 8 years I was a music promoter in Norther Michigan. I dealt mostly with folk, bluegrass, and indie acoustic musicians. I wish I had heard of her and her bands sooner. AJ Lee is 13, has received a handful of awards and already has a voice that's as rich and sophisticated as some of the best bluegrass singers that have been in the business for decades. This stuff is consistently leaving me speechless. MJ was comparing her to Alison Krauss, I'm not sure I'd go that far yet, but check back with her in a couple years and maybe. Check out this link for one my favorites that I've found this morning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbP6PlL9dH4

The lost Book of Aquarius Released

I have always been interested in the lost knowledge of ancient times. I read various books on the topics that no longer people talk about. I have been a regular user of forgottenbooks.org and they have released some great books which had been lost in print. Last week i visited the website again and i saw that they have released a new book on Alchemy which had been lost in prints. The book of Aquarius is the name of the book and its about the knowledge and power of alchemy. I had always been interested in alchemists and so i downloaded the ebook which was free. I read the book and i became a fan instantly. The author seems to know a lot about Alchemy and power of nature. I am so impressed by the author and his writing and read some pages over and over again. I would like to quote a few lines from the book here..

The purpose of this book is to release one particular secret, which has been kept hidden for the last 12,000 years. The Philosophers' Stone, Elixir of Life, Fountain of Youth, Ambrosia, Soma, Amrita, Nectar of Immortality. These are different names for the same thing.

Throughout history this secret has been used by a very few to extend their lives hundreds of years in perfect health, with access to unlimited wealth, among many other miraculous properties. Some kept the secret because they understood that the time was not right for the secret to be free for all people, but most kept the secret out of their own jealousy, ignorance, egotism and corruption.

The Stone's history and the history of the human race up until this day is a strange story full of secret societies, hooded cloaks, and mystical symbols. Such theatrics are childish and shallow. It's pointless to look for the light in the shadows.

The Philosophers' Stone operates and is made by entirely natural and scientific means. Truth is always simple, beautiful and easy to understand.

The Philosophers' Stone is real; you can make it at home. The Stone makes old people young, heals all forms of sickness and disease, extends your life, turns any metal into gold, and more, as you will learn. This isn't a myth or a metaphor, it's a fact.

Don't judge this book before you've read it. This is not one of those airy fairy books written in all kinds of mystical language, filling pages with words that makes sentences but not sense. This book will make more sense than anything you've ever read before.

The age of secrets is over. I'm writing this book in common English. There's no need for mystical language or metaphor. This book contains no hidden meaning or codes; everything is stated plainly and directly, in the shortest and simplest of words necessary to convey the meaning.

I know not many people will believe this. But i would like it if people just take a look at the book. I am working to make my own philosopher’s stone and i would like to have some fellow members of the forum to be interested in the idea. The Pdf and the audiobook version of the book is free and can be downloaded from the website
http://www.bookofaquarius.forgottenbooks.org

Please read the book at least once and let me know what you think about it. I would like to discuss this topic with other people. Cheers.

Disturbed Earth by Margaret Atwood

A dear friend, Sue Woods, gave Paul and me a copy of this poem after hearing about the mullein video:

Disturbed Earth

Disturbed earth: some plants sprout quickly in it.
Sow thistles come to mind.
After you've wrenched them out
they'll snake back underground
and thrust their fleshy prickled snouts in
where you intended hostas.

Hawkweek will do that. Purslane. Purple vetch.
Marginals, hugging ditches,
flagrant with seed,
strewing their paupers' bouquets.

Why is it you reject them,
them and their tangled harmonies
and raffish madrigals?
Because they thwart your will.

I feel the same about them:
I hack and dig,
I stomp their pods and stems,
I slash and crush them. Still,

suppose I make a comeback -
a transmutation, say -
once I've been spaded under?
Some quirky growth or ambush?

Don't search the perennial border:
look for me in disturbed earth.

--Margaret Atwood

Podcast re Atlas Shrugged

It was interesting to listen to the podcast..I haven't yet read the book and am not sure if I will or not. However..better late than never..? CONGRATULATIONS on your award those few years back Paul!

It is almost a commonplace that people who DO, get attacked by people who want only to get credit for talking about doing but not really put out any effort to actually follow up on the talking with action. It is sad that often that includes families. I think that was one of the reasons I always yearned toward some sort of intentional community as I thought that there everyone would be supportive towards common goals. Or even uncommon ones as long as they fit into the spirit of the group..you support my efforts to supplement income with paper mache creatures and I will support your efforts to write a book sort of thing. Utopian perhaps but emotional support is a rare beast these days.

In a TED talk I watched yesterday, they said that actually talking about doing something ..even if it was "call me every day and ask me what I have done about this" made it LESS likely to happen.

I told my sister and brother that I had got a twitter account and was going to talk a bit about my efforts to do something with my land, and both of them immediately got onto the site and posted that I was too old and should forget it. I bet most people have had an experience similar to that. It's sorta hard to keep up your enthusiasm when stuff like that happens..

I think this may be one reason for the huge numbers of people you have flocking to this site..it's somewhere that people can share ideas and thoughts without having to be concerned about getting cut off at the knees. You do a good job. .

vegetable dyes for Easter eggs

First, I was going to post this to meaningless drivel, then to the cooking forum, and then it dawned on me that these can be SO BEAUTIFUL that's it's truly art. Much more stunning than those silly fake, toxic dyes.

This blogger has a How to Dye Easter Eggs Naturally Tutorial that is quite nice.

It's really close to what I used to do with my kids every year, though ours were not as dark as hers. My favorite thing to do was to use old pantyhose or cheesecloth and tie a sweet little leaf or flower onto the egg before dying it. Just exquisite, if you ask me.

about 20 china pheasants out my window

Happy new years. I thought that instead of one of my regular videos, it would just be nice to show off some footage of pheasants. All of this is taken from my window where my computer is.

There are about two dozen that cruise across the wheat stubble every day. And, yes, a few deer too. Once in a long while, they come a little closer and I take a picture or two. Or some video. Lookit me! I'm a crappy nature photographer!

My friend, Jimmy Pardo, sent me this music a while back to use as background in my videos. I think the song itself is quite nice. So, this time I'm keeping my pie hole shut and letting the video focus on the pheasants and the music.

I'm a few miles south of missoula, montana. So this is for all of those folks that tell me "I wished I lived in missoula - or anywhere in montana". This is my way of saying "neener neener, I live in missoula and you don't" :) .

When I was a kid, I was taught that these are "china pheasants". If there is a more appropriate name for them, I don't want to know.

Kunstler on the aesthetics of place, and why they matter

Via the One Straw blog:

James Howard Kunstler offers a 20-minute lecture on building places that are worth defending. His ideas for retrofitting the suburbs have shades of Holmgren, especially in the way they draw from traditional patterns of life and modern infrastructure, but focus a lot more on retail/public/central space, rather than residential space.

His language is very coarse, so be ready for him to gratuitously use four-letter words, and fling big dollops of contempt toward everyone who disagrees with him. I think his ideas are worthwhile, even if the packaging around them seems a little dysfunctional.

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/121

DIY punk/hardcore

Anyone else into it? For those who don't know, it's a whole subculture that has grown up over the last few decades around the concept of cheap, accessible and fun music. There are international connections all over the place built up through touring (playing gigs for no more than fuel costs, food and a place to sleep), trading records, zines and other publishing, travel, correspondence and so on. Professionalist attitudes and sense of entitlement are frowned upon, if not met with outright hostility! Everyone's equal, whether it's the founders of everyone's favourite band or a kid who's just been to see their first show. I could go on for ages and ages about this, it's so great... Here's a sample of my local: www.eirecore.cjb.net. Good week for me this week. Tonight I'm seeing Fag Enablerz in Dublin, then Friday going up to Belfast for the Lobotomies. Both are highly thought of in the local scene, and both are playing what will possibly be their last ever gigs! Waaaaa!
