Paul , maybe we need an app for that

Concerning this gals comments.

http://www.permies.com/t/14459/permaculture/Advice-please-Studying-permaculture-do

maybe that is how you could create a revenue stream out of this site.
you could build a wiki, and then sell an app that had a monthly or annual fee for it.

even better for us would be a free wiki, and charge for plant pathogens and IPM stratagies.
or just charge for tech support and template design and , and , and.....

Would be nice to have an automatically updating wiki/app, and the Wikipad looks like it would do it well

simple to set up templates, and looks like it has drawing tools, so you could even set up plant maps to keep track of onsite stuff.
set up another algo to track genetics, at least thru f1 and f2 and growout, and you would have something worth buying for sure.

http://wikidpad.sourceforge.net/

I think it would work, and everything else out there is either just journal software, or landscape design.
wikipad also does straight text imports and CDM files so all the folks with Word and Excel docs could import their info.

Hmmmmmm.

sepp report

Sepp says I am the number one permaculture guy in the US. I'm too exhausted to argue the point.

Sepp wants me to travel with him and see his projects. He especially wants me to see his project in russia.

There is a lot of stuff to go over and there is way too much stuff going on. And, frankly, I could use a rest.

I have been writing down some stuff that is new to me. Abput 5% of the stuff he says is stuff I have not heard before.

Sepp has pulled me aside several times and shared stuff with me. On the first night he had me over for dinner and showed me some pictures of some of his current projects. A lot of new and awesome stuff. He is sending me the pics and giving me permission to post to permies.

Did my user account here hacked ?

I'm having trouble with my Permies user account. I tried to send a message to "moderator", but it didn't go through because it said
" Error.
Could not determine the user id. Please check if you typed the display name correctly and try again. "

My user name is Dragonlaurel but the posts I made are now labeled by "dragonlaurelMcCoy". I do actually live in the Ouachitas, so that part is still the same.
Could my user account have been hacked? I just changed my password, in case it was.

Here's one of the posts, in case it helps:

dragonlaurel McCoy

Joined: Jan 02, 2011
Posts: 9
Location: Ouachita Mts. - Ar.

posted Tuesday, June 21, 2011 01:18:52
This sounds like a great idea. I'm newer to permaculture and figuring out good guilds -more easily- would be a huge help. Many of the permaculture favorites are more tropical than I can use. I would love to have plants narrowed down by climate. People with greenhouses could still click/type those conditions.

It would be nice if you could narrow criteria by any of these:
native plants of that region
moisture preference - desert, semi-dry, Mediterranean, rain forest, wetlands
shade/sun needs
soil types- sandy, rocky, clay, and deep topsoil or thin layer
deer/critter/bug resistance or tolerance
edible for humans or livestock - mention if it can be toxic

A selection option that lets you see stuff for areas with similar conditions would be great. (For example - French immigrants started wineries in the Ozarks before the Prohibition days, because the growing conditions were similar.

I don't want to overwhelm you. Just giving ideas on options that appeal to me. I'm not a techie, so I don't know which ones would be easy or hard to do.

This forum has really helped me to gel all the dreams and ideas and get a good plan going for my dream homestead . However , has anyone but me noticed the similarity between Paul ( on this site ) and the role Zappa played in "200 Motels"?I wonder who would play his Doppelganger in the Permie version?
Back in the days I was skinny but could now at middleage could play the Flo or Eddy part.Hey I think Pauls watching us!

Posts Not Shwoing Up

Hey all,
I've been having an issue with this forum for the past couple of days. A lot of posts are just not showing up. For instance, in the "Millionaire Amish Farmer" thread, it says the last post was made on April 15 by Hao de. This post is not on the thread and has not been since I first tried to read it on Sunday. I've also noticed the same thing on numerous other threads. At first, I thought the forum was just down for maintenance, but it is still going on. Is this happening to anyone else?
Kickstarter for Paul's Tour?

Just wondering if there's going to be a kickstarter or chip-in for Paul's (still being discussed) tour?

I think it would be a good idea if the permaculture crowd could lay down some money for a tour, since we are the primary beneficiary of good video and podcast production. And the content on the forum just gets better when cool things are documented.

I'd be willing to throw in a little gas money for it.

best,
William

a thought on spam

What if the number of posts you are allowed is tied to the length of time you have been registered on the site? You could be upfront about it, say for the first week after you join you may post twice the number of days you have been a member, then the restriction is lifted. That won't stop trolls, but I was wondering if it would put a damper on the chinese spammers. But then, I don't know whether they have an attention span that long... But I have noticed that new members tend to dip a toe before jumping in full force, and it wouldn't have discouraged me.
No need for a reply on this, maybe it's been flown and had holes poked in it before. :)
Gani

I want to do what you are doing, could you tell me how for free?

I probably get this request about four times a year. Someone with no experience in a foreign country, does not speak Spanish, has never run a business in their life, hasn't even managed a small store wants me to teach them how to do what I do, but of course they have no money...

I generally don't know if I should be amused, or offended. I bet Paul gets the same.

What always gets me is how often people assume your time has no value whatsoever, nor you ideas, or your investment, etc. Sort like those who borrow tools, and return them dirty, etc.

The funny thing is that clients of ours who have paid are always so thrilled that the president (that would be me) is willing to spend all day with them as we walk the fields, without charge - and they invariably pick up my meals.

I guess it is how you are raised, as they say down here. If you have lived a life where everything was given to you, you don't value anything.

the answer

Today I received a LOT of questions via email so I thought I would start a thread to help these folks make sure they get an excellent answer.

I used to get about 80 questions per day via email. About 78 of those questions, on any given day, were questions that I had been asked before. So I started these forums and that has been a huge help. Now, somebody asks a question on these forums, they get an excellent answer and then thousands of others learn this stuff too!

The really cool thing is that a lot of these questions get answers from a dozen different people. Including lots of points I probably would not have thought of in my answer. There are lots of people here that know exactly what I would say, and they convey that. And those same people don't agree with me, so they convey that too. And then others chime in with lots of different perspectives.

If 48 hours goes by and you have not received an excellent answer, please email me with a link to the thread and I wll put in my answer. It probably won't be excellent, but I'll try.

Here is a cool new feature in our forum software: for every new post, an algorithm is run comparing all of the text of your post with all other threads in all of the forums. And the five best matching threads are shown at the bottom of the new thread. Maybe one of these will help a small bit while you are waiting for a response to your question.

Once in a long while, somebody says they are not comfortable with forums or they really need an immediate answer from me. That's cool. Please see this page about my rates on one-on-one consultation. And keep in mind, using the forums is always free.

Therefore, in an SMS, it's somewhat acceptable "4 u 2 wrt lk ths" (for you to write like this.)

But if you're posting on JavaRanch, you're probably using a real keyboard, sitting at a desk, in a comfortable chair. Using abbreviations like "u" and "r" and "2" for "you", "are", and "too" makes your writing much harder to understand, especially for the many Ranchers for whom English isn't their native language. The atmosphere of the Ranch will benefit, but more importantly, you will benefit because doing so will lead to your questions getting better answers.

"Plz" is not a word in the English language.

I know that personally, when I see a pretend word like newb, my brain stops and processes it - it breaks the flow of my reading. After 2 or 3 such breaks in my reading, I give up and go on to help someone who's post is more legible.

podcast delays?

I made a lot of podcasts lately because Suzy Bean made it so easy. It takes hours to mash the file, upload it, put all the right descriptions and then announce it in the appropriate places. Each time. And there are all sorts of things that can and will go wrong. Suzy Bean has it down.

And now she off seeking new adventures. It sounds like she is going to explore the country a bit. She says she will keep processing and uploading podcasts. There are quite a few in the hopper waiting for her to process. I guess we will get podcasts when we get podcasts. So all the hard work behind the last 100 podcasts or so were done by Suzy Bean. About 300 hours. And when we had technical difficulties, she went and edited a hundred podcasts, one at a time, to make them work better.

Suzy Bean is a super quiet woman. I think she says about eight words a day, and four of those are "yes!"

I guess I thought it would be good to have a thread that would let people know that there could be delays. Plus to let folks know about the huge amount of work suzy has done.

(btw, suzy bean has a paypal account: susanna.bean gmail com)

paul wheaton is impossible to work with

Yesterday I learned "everybody thinks paul wheaton is impossible to work with".

It took some digging, but I found out that this is rooted in two things:

1) about a hundred people have come to the forums at permies.com and posted something like "you, bob smith, are obviously stupid" and then I would delete that. And the poster would then attempt to engage me in a conversation about "how is bob smith going to learn that he is stupid if somebody doesn't say something? Plus, you are violating my rights to free speech." I would then point out that this freedom of the press and I choose to not publish hate speech. The poster then goes on a censorship rant and then I hear bits back over the years about how this person is telling the world about what an asshole I am. Fair enough.

2) Several years ago I was involved in trying to help the washington state permaculture group transition into being a northwest permacutlure group. So I bought a couple of domain names: nwpermaculture.com and nwpermacutlure.org. I didn't have the time to do the full blown web page, but I set up something to tide us over until the real web folks showed up. Then I pointed the domain to their stuff. Two minutes. That was 2010. In 2011, it was, again, about two minutes of pointing the domain to their stuff. 2012: they want me to point the domain to my my registrar's stuff and then fiddle with the registrar's stuff. i explain why that won't work ... "just DO it!" okayfine. See, it doesn't work. After three more attempts to do weird things it has consumed four hours of my life and it is still broken as I predicted for each one. I hear through the grapevine that I am impossible to work with.

Why do I post this in a thread? Because I keep finding myself trying to help folks with this and similar stuff, and I keep finding all new people that are certain that I am an asshole or "impossible to work with" or whatever after some small experience with me. I intended to direct them to this thread before we start working together, and then direct them to this thread again after they have come to the conclusion that I am difficult.

I guess the formula is always the same "do as I say" "I'm not comfortable with that" "then you are impossible to work with".

I now choose to not help with most of these projects. I just don't need the hate.

Stickied Forum Index

Hey all,

I have an idea for the forum that came from being a new user here. It might be useful to have a stickied index thread for every or almost every forum section, a place where you can find a list of popular or useful. For example, in one of the indexes you might have a list of threads about particular plants. As a newer member it would of been useful to see a list of threads that the community would recommend to get started in the forum and or permaculture. Just a idea, would be curious to see what others thought.

Cheers,
Kirk

on tour: seattle, portland, eureka, sf, fresno, sb, sd, phoenix, slc, boise

There are talks going on about the idea of renting a land whale and travelling in a big loop spread out over three weeks. At the moment there would be me, jocelyn and my friend geoff. Jocelyn is talking about forest might be along for part of the trip. The tiniest land whale seems to have three beds - so there would be and empty bed for part of the trip.

Some rough calculations on the cost shows ..... a lot of cost. Thousands.

We are currently throwing around lots and lots of ideas.

I've been asked to speak at a bunch of places and they always seem far away. So now it kinda seems like it is possible that I could come to those areas. Several of those speaking gigs sound like they are willing to shell out a few bucks.

Getting a slightly larger land whale costs just a little more. And will probably use just a little more fuel. If that could then accommodate two more people, then that would probably dramatically drop our carbon footprint per person. And maybe other folks would be game for coming along for part of the ride and chipping in for the expenses.

Currently thinking about three weeks, starting and ending in seattle. The loop would go through oregon and california, ending in sandy eggo, then coming back inland including phoenix and salt lake city.

Currently in the brainstorming phase. With the idea of stopping by lots of permaculture sites all along the way.

Anybody out there want to get in on the tour and chip in money and driving and food and cooking and stuff? Maybe for four days of the three week trip?

OMG, TYTY This place is amazing!

First, yeah I know, I am new here. Mainly because I have been a very well hidden lurker for several years. I am a country girl, married to a city boy that FINALLY realized, the country way of life is one of the few things in life you can honestly count on when the chips are down.

I am that kind of person you can pick out in the neighborhood from miles away. And I can not express how much value I have found in here. Being as I have been sentenced to living with a city boy, I have found ways to bring the country to our yard. While neighbors toss down chemicals, lots of wasted water, spend hours mowing and edging every growing season...mine is filled with walk ways of edible and aromatic delights. Trees galore (mainly because I am constantly trying to "erase" from the view from any window the nearness of the neighbors). People once came knocking on our door asking me "why can you just tear out your gardens and plant grass like the rest of us?". I never argued with these guys (we live in an upscale bedroom community), they normally only complained when they wanted to sell their houses and well, people wanted our yard or a discount in the price of other homes to allow them enough money to "re-design" their yards. I sent every complaint away with a smile and a basket filled with preservers, a lasagna kit or what ever else I had, to include a hot piping loaf of wild yeast bread.

I admit, like your title. "goofball"...yup, that has been me since my dear husband gleaned me off the farm 27 years ago. Even though he still gets sick to his stomach and turns all shades of pale when I am cleaning up a rabbit or chicken for dinner........he has changed, but as for tinkering with this site........just keep it up and ALIVE......I can't tell you how much value I have found here! As soon as we find the right parcel we will be kicking the grid and do what I have been trying to do in the city as best as I could.

Forum idea

So I was listening to a recent podcast where Paul brought up, again, the idea of a thread for each plant people are using in their permaculture systems and I was wondering if it would be possible to setup a forum for each hardiness zone and people can post specific plants, guilds, polycultures that have and haven't worked for them in their particular zone. I realize that would be a lot of extra forums and there is still quite a bit of diversity within each zone, but I think it might be a helpful tool for everyone.

Please consider, thanks.

headphones with microphone - microphone hiss

I had these headphones with a microphone. They worked great. The only problem was that I didn't want to wear them for more than an hour or two cuz they would make my ears hurt. And some podcasts would run longer than that.

I did have two other headphones that were more comfortable, but one had an ear that didn't work and the other had an ear piece falling off.

They were all five to ten years old.

I thought to myself it would be really nice to have one good set of headphones with a microphone. I shopped around a little and it seemed like they would be about $60 to $75 for "gaming headphones".

At the same time Kelda needed something similar and she came by and we recorded podcasts. I gave her my good headphones with the microphone so we can make lots of good podcasts in the future. And then buzzed out to get a long term solution.

First headset: I recorded the audio part of a video and there was a huge amount of background hiss. Lots of fiddling and it wouldn't go away and it was way too much hiss for the videos. I took them back.

Second headset: I figured the first ones were only $60, so I went with $100. Same problem with hiss.

Third: Different brand from a different store. same problem.

Fourth: Different brand, but this time it says "studio quality". Same problem.

Before returning #4, I drove to "guitar center" about a half hour away - only to learn they don't have anything like that in stock.

I then ordered two different ones over the internet, both being studio quality from different sources. One was "yamaha" and one was "koss". Both seemed like hi fi brands.

The headset I gave to Kelda was a USB headset. Headsets 1 through 4 were audio jack headsets. When I returned #4 I picked up a USB headset. This would be the fifth. No hiss, but they do have an electronic hum/buzz in the background - quieter than the hiss. With a bit of fiddling I can sorta mask most of it in the videos. I went ahead and finished the video with this.

The two headsets arrived in the mail. Both had hiss.

I tried the built in microphone on the laptop - it has more than a hiss - it sorta records all the sounds of the laptop fan and hard disk and everything.

I found an old external microphone - it has hiss.

I returned the two mail order headsets.

When i edited the video for today and added the bit at the end I was reminded of how I would like to get one good do-it-all-headset so I have less crap to pack around when I travel. What would be great is the old headphones with the only modification being that they were more comfortable and cupped my ear in case I tried to listen to stuff on an airplane.

I had no idea this would turn into such a huge deal.

My guess now is that my fancy pants laptop has a crappy sound card. And somehow, that old USB headset had good electronics in it.

I'm hoping that somebody out there knows much more about this sort of thing than i do and can direct me to one more purchase and i will be all done. I don't relish the idea of burning through a dozen more headphones or ending up with a bunch of different things to lug around with me when I travel.

Request for a political discussion forum

Paul, I understand that you want to shy away from political discussions, and that you see the place for these topics in the "meaningless drivel" forum. I think that there are many of us who feel that politics are an important part of Permaculture, since social/political intersections are just as real and affect our lives in a very significant way. For instance, regulations on things like raw milk and cannabis, and the influence of corporations like Monsanto are issues that affect everybody, but especially Permaculturists and homesteaders. By putting these topics in the "meaningless drivel" forum you are dismissing them as meaningless issues and not allowing potentially very useful and enlightening discussions to take place. I realize that this is your forum, and you can do what you want, so I ask this respectfully. I think that the addition of a serious political discussion forum might be a very powerful tool to organize awareness for issues that affect all of us. Anyway, if it turns out to be a flop you can always delete it. Does anybody agree with me? Please reply/like to show your support for such a forum.

Paul about this Name thingy

Hey Paul,
Recently we received an email with a reminder about names on the site.Which was appreciated
But well how does one go about doing a name change??? We use the Happy House, because it is the name that we have used across the internet since we were dubbed with it a few years ago.. .People in the Flathead and Lake county know us not as Mary and James but as the Happy House....When we teach alternative gardening and living classes we are known as the Happy house as well,,,We also both post here sometimes together as one is cooking or serving wine while the other is typing answers.. We always sign with our names,,,,, How important is it we change our names to something more mundane and not one whom anyone we send here will remotely know..
Thanks
Mary and James
of the
happy House

Suggestion: login timeout

I wonder it would be possible to extend the automatic logout period. It often takes me several minutes to read a good message and then rather longer to try a good reply and longer still to (hopefully) prune said reply down to some reasonable length. By that time I need to log in again to post.

I've looked in "My Profile" and didn't see any likely option which I control, so it appears to be something the administrator or installer sets.

Or maybe I'm just a whole lot slower or maybe I've missed some setting I should adjust.

Rufus

podcast 111: innovation is a drama magnet

Weird.

I was sure this was my all time worst podcast. Another record-in-the-car-by-myself thing. I even thought of flushing it and not putting it up at all.

And the positive responses have been huge. And awesome. Not only comments about how people feel like they are "one of the five" but also some food for thought that was new to me and really excellent!
podcast meta topics

I received comments from a few podcast listeners that they want to hear more about permaculture and less about the community struggles that come from .... people that are throwing their hate fest in my direction.

I think it is good to want that. And, I agree that the quality of the podcast would be higher with that.

At the same time, I think people would be shocked to learn just how much of this sort of icky there is. And it is the people that are within permaculture circles that are bringing most of the ick to the table. It is utterly stunning the amount of hostility there is in the name of love for permaculture. I think it is nice to pretend it isn't there. But since I am bombarded with it so much, I think it is only reasonable that a fair amount of it will end up in the podcasts.

I hope that we will grow to be more aware of the ick-in-the-name-of-love and help demonstrate a healthier path for others.

Persuasion forum?

There are a lot of topics in the world surrounding permaculture that can be hard for people to swallow on their first introduction, and there are also a lot of beliefs that people hold that deserve to be challenged with a permaculture perspective. One thing that seems to be consistently difficult for most people (myself included) is finding the right words to explain something or argue something clearly and calmly in the face of bad reasoning. I was thinking that there are a zillion people here who have the knowledge to put together a sort of "best sound reasoning" library of explanations and rational arguments that could be a really valuable resource for the group as a whole in situations like when you're at a party and somebody says something like "Everybody knows organic farming can't feed the world, so <insert crazy stuff here>" or "Planned obsolescence creates jobs, so it's a good thing"

Would anybody else be interested in having a forum or wiki or something dedicated to putting some of these common topics into the clearest possible words? There would have to be some kind of ground rules so that the threads didn't turn into flame wars all the time.. maybe say that each thread is for the development of a specific explanation or case, and other positions on the issue would have to be in separate threads or something. If it could be made to work I think it might be a really handy thing, but it could also turn into a black hole of time commitment for moderators if it didn't work out.
